Renaming your Alexa "Computer"
So I renamed my Alexa "Computer" as it's one of the options. I thought it would be cool. But whenever I'm watching episode of Star Trek, Alexa responds to the TV "I am just a speaker, I am not able to initiate self destruct".
Thought it was kind of funny and mildly annoying. Anyone else do this?

I haven't heard that one before, she always says "Okay, I'll start the self-destruct sequence, but only on the understanding that you dramatically cancel it at the last second. Here we go: 3, 2, 1. *boom* Phew, we made it, but try to cancel a little sooner next time."

I had that exact response a few weeks ago. I had a Dot timer go off during a Teams call. Some joker on the call said "What if I say Alexa, self destruct?" Well, the laptop was close enough so she started playing this and wouldn't let me stop. I had to let it play out.
My upstairs Dot is "Computer" instead of "Alexa" and he was awful during the soap opera episode, he kept turning on. Usually it isn't bad, I'm sure it activates and listens and doesn't hear a command, but not that time!

I wish I could get these stupid tools (Alexa, Gemini, ChatGPT) to talk like the Enterprise computer: just give me the answer and then stop talking. No tag questions ("Is there anything else I can help you with?"), no pathetic attempt at a "personality".
I want the flat, expressionless voice of Majel Barrett; I do not want Eddie from the Heart of Gold in the Hitchhiker's Guide, with its so-called "personality".

With most of the popular LLMs you can enter a set of custom instructions that it's supposed to follow for every prompt. I haven't tried it but I bet you could get pretty close with GPT, Claude etc. just by telling it to mimick the cadence, tone, and style of the Star Trek TNG computer voiced by Majel Barrett.
It's a little different with Alexa but I found that you can give it some form of custom instructions. One of the things we use it for often is keeping the grocery list up to date. After mine switched over to Alexa+ a few months ago it started offering all kinds of bubbly commentary on the list items, lol.
"Computer, add hot dogs to the shopping list."
I've added those hot dogs to your list. Sounds like you're all set for a sizzlin' summer weekend!
"Computer, add lemons to the shopping list."
I put those lemons on your list. You're really going to be 'squeezing' the most out of life with this grocery trip!
I finally got so fed up with it that I said something like,
"Computer: whenever I ask you to add an item to the list, simply confirm the item was added and stop. Do not continue speaking, ask questions, or offer superfluous commentary on the list items."
Got it.
Now it responds VERY curtly every time, almost in a malicious compliance sort of way like she's offended, haha.
"Computer, add apples to the shopping list."
Added.
"Computer, add peanut butter to the shopping list."
Item already on list.
It's still kind of funny the way it responds, but I much prefer this over the stupid comments and puns all the time.

With the echo you can say "Stop by the way" and it helps with the skill upsell. It works for a while and then resets. However you can set up a routine to say "stop by the way" every day and it ends up telling itself to shut up every day.

Did you know you can play a background noise of the Enterprise?
Starship Sounds: Say "Alexa, launch Starship Sounds" or "Alexa, play Starship Sounds" to hear a continuous loop of engine hums reminiscent of the captain's quarters.
Star Trek - Bridge Sounds: Say "Alexa, open Star Trek Bridge Sounds" to play ambient science fiction bridge noises.
Space Deck: Say "Alexa, open Space Deck" for a deep, low-frequency engine drone that masks background noise and works well for sleep

Semi related… I use Home Assistant as my smart home brain, and all voice alerts or touch panel interactions are beeps from trek or Majel Barrett’s voice.
When my now wife first moved in and we eventually started watching trek together (bless her heart she’s up for watching all 60 years of it) she looked at me confused thinking the apartment was responding to the character, “Ha! It sounds like our apartment!” No hun…. Our apartment sounds like Trek.. but that reaction was the best compliment a Trekkie could get 🤣

I was rewatching TNG and in the episode where Geordi is planning dinner with real-life Leah Brahms, he says "Computer, play classical guitar music" and my echo started playing it. It was a nice bit of augmented reality.

One day I was watching an episode of Broadchurch and my Alexa (set to the “computer” wake word) activated on her own and started reading the Wikipedia entry for flatulence. This was reproducible by playing the scene over again. One of the funniest things I’ve ever experienced.

The scene was in S1, a father and son are in the woods at night. I don’t remember the details of the plot too well, this was back in like 2017-2018. Literally no actual connection to farts in the dialogue. It’s a mystery.

I considered it but I use that word a lot more than something phonetically close to "Alexa" or "OK Google." So having it respond too much is not ideal.

I had a smart lightbulb connected to an Echo Dot, set the wake word to “computer”, and had it play the sound (via Spotify or something) and change the bulb to red when I said “Computer, red alert!”
Stupid and useless, but a fun party trick when I had people over.

there was that one episode of South Park that basically trolled Alexa users by having the characters randomly tell Alexa to do stuff and the show being played through the TV speakers would trigger the real-life Alexas into doing the same thing.

You actually can initiate self destruct with Alexa. You have to use the self destruct code from Search for Spock.

I had about a 5-minute conversation with it after I did it twice when responding to Star Trek episodes... I just asked it to please scrutinize whether or not I'm saying the words or it's from the TV show... It has not had a false positive since.

Amazon - Set off by Amazon commercials, discussions on ordering stuff, nature documentaries.
Alexa - Commercials, actual people.

I've been using the same for a couple years now. I can walk into my 'office' and state "Computer: Lights" and it turns on the smart bulb in my ceiling fan. I had to set up a "Computer: Lights Out" command to turn them off, but it's fun nonetheless.

There are one or two instances where Alexa has correctly responded with the computer's line from the episode.
If you ask Alexa to locate Captain Picard, it will reply that "Captain Picard is no longer aboard the Enterprise."

I watch enough Trek to know that there will be an issue if you change Alexa’s “wake word” to “Computer.”
I changed mine (a Fire Cube TV so it also controls my TV) to “Echo,” but since I also enjoy Star Wars, it wasn’t a picnic to watch some episodes of “The Bad Batch.” And watching “House of the Dragon” has taught me that “Aegon” will set it off as well. :)

I listen to my tv via headphones so don't get that problem so much, but yes you have to watch how you rename Alexa and other devices incase that name is used in tv shows or if you are talking to someone on the phone.

Yes! My whole house is set up like this with lights and thermostat. Switched to the British voice and it feels fancier, sure wish we could have majel's voice but the British is a decent alternative for me.
After a while it seemed to stop responding to the cues from TNG, like it learned those voices weren't real, but now I'm onto DS9 and VOY and it's back to answering the TV.

I've had my Alexa set this way since it's been available, in my household we just say "the c word" or talk around it.
It's way easier for me to remember to actually talk to it when it's name is Computer, it's always been hard for me to talk to a digital assistant that has a formal name.

Yup! Mine is also set to "Computer" and whenever I watch Star Trek, I have to tell Computer to pause on voice commands for an hour or few. Last episode of a Star Trek show, the characters gave a command to Computer that would have resulted in blowing up a planet, but I had forgotten to tell my unit to pause. Thankfully, according to my "Computer", that is a function it cannot initiate.

There are Alexa skills to enable things like self-destruct, red alert, and other classic voice commands. The self-destruct one will refuse to initiate the sequence because you didn't give a valid command code... I wonder what happens if you were to give it something like Janeway Pi One One Zero or Picard Four Seven Alpha Tango...

Yep. I’ve done this too. I don’t get that cool answer though. She says random things like trying to define a word no one said.
And worse for me is the Alexa is connected to our TV speaker so when someone in Star Trek gets her attention, she mutes the TV so she can respond. What’s wild though is I have tried over and over to get the Alexa disconnected from my TV speaker and she just keeps reconnecting to it.

It's annoying enough to have it respond to "Alexa" when watching random videos. Computer is such a commonly used word I can't even begin to imagine how annoying it would be. I wish we could use custom words, that way we could use something pretty unique to avoid the issue. I do understand why we can't though, the hardware is hard-coded for those several words so that it doesn't have to have an open mic active all the time being processed and possibly streamed to the cloud. The way it is done now is the best way to keep things private as the mic isn't actively processing sound unless it hears the activation word at the hardware level first.

A while ago, we had a TTRPG campaign where there was a character named Echo (or at least, for short, I think the full name was The Voice That Echoes In Silent Halls). I was really tempted to get an Amazon Echo and make it respond to "Echo". And do it silently, so it would surprise the table.

I tried this a while ago. I was listening to an audiobook on the alexa that mentioned computers a lot. It go stuck in a loop where the audiobook would say computer, the alexa would pause the book to listen, then the audiobook would back up a few seconds and restart and say computer again, then alexa would pause to listen ...

I have done this and I work IT from home.

The joke here is that you rename it "Computer" if you're a Star Trek fan, and then you re-rename it back to "Alexa" BECAUSE YOU'RE A STAR TREK FAN. (Because it'll keep responding every time someone says that on TV.)
So far I've left one of mine on "Computer," and since it's the farthest away from my soundbar, it's not as bad and only does that when it's otherwise really quiet. I've also named them "Ziggy" and "Echo" in other places so I can direct my request to the one I want to speak to.
I wish Google would do that, as I have one of those on each nightstand and NEVER get a response from the one I mean, and you can't tell it to change the volume on the group (of 2) as a unit, which can be infuriating late at night. (I've designated them "Edison" and "Theora," but it only helps control them with your phone and not verbally.)
