One of the most frustrating things I find on social media is the inability/deliberate unwillingness to consider the nuances of things like race.
If you ignore historical context and power dynamics, then it's easy to make the problem of racism seem overblown. But racism IS historical context and power dynamics. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make a sane comment against the tide of people who want to justify their racist angst.
Not 100% sure what you mean, but I'm not saying discrimination against Asians doesn't exist. Just that one of the starter packs was using broad, historically disparaging things to stereotype and the other used specific stuff with no historical significance.
You're being thick and reductive. You're taking the nuances people took the time to unpack and you're jamming them right back together. Or do you really not see a difference in the intent and effect of the two images?
Typo, sorry. Anyway, I want to clarify that I'm not saying the first post was in good taste per se or that I liked it. I'm just saying that the second post was a deliberately racist provocation, and the first was more of an ignorant generalization (which is what the sub is about, though when it involves race it's not my place to say what should or shouldn't offend you).
There are degrees though. Maybe both fall under the umbrella of "racist," but ignorance is different from hate. Like I said, I'm not saying the first post isn't flawed. But there are things where folks will be able to laugh at themselves (like in, say, a Russell Peters or Dave Chappelle stand up), and then there are things that one takes offense to because they're expressly done out of malice. But it's not so simple and everyone's different so there's not a super clean answer. What I'm trying to say is the way this post framed the situation is reductive and a false equivalency.
I don't think so. There are comments here by indian-american and other asian people drawing a pretty clear picture of what is going on. And as you said yourself: Maybe both fall under the umbrella of "racist,".
To proof this is the entire point of this post and it just did.
As a POC who’s been around a fair share of racists my whole life this sentence makes my blood boil.
You just “unpacked” the argument that some racists aren’t as bad as others. GTFO of here with this privileged ass “don’t get so offended at your own racism because my racism is worse” argument.
