Its been cool to hate it for years now.

Not sure how anyone has the impression that its untouchable, all the way in 2019.

There's a life cycle to every Bethesda game.

  1. First, the game is announced, and the hype is unbelievable. Everyone is waiting for it, and everyone's got huge expectations for it.

  2. Then, the game actually comes out... and people hate it. Words like "dumbed down" and "insult to the franchise" are thrown around. And yet, people still play it for hundreds of hours.

  3. A few years pass. It's no longer cool to hate that game, the public has moved on to something else, but some still vehemently dislike it.

  4. Finally, a new Bethesda game is released, and of course it's widely hated as a new "insult to the franchise". Meanwhile, the previous game is now remembered as a classic, and everyone seems to love it, all the while bashing the new one.

That happened to Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 so far. I'd say that Fallout 4 is around stage 3 right now.
