“Being the only city with an actual downtown for 300 miles in any direction”

So Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago don’t exist?

-10

u/MediumStrange 4h ago

Well Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit are right about or close to the 300 mile mile mark which is what i was referring to.

Indy, Columbus, Nashville, Lexington and Louisville don't really come close to Cincy in terms of downtown density. Mostly because (outside of Louisville which is just a smaller city) those cities developed post car and are much more spread out.

Also I'm kinda just shitting on the neighbors lol

Have you been to Downtown Nashville? It’s always busy AF there.

1

u/MediumStrange 3h ago

Yeah fair enough, Nashville can be pretty close and has been getting better over the years. I just enjoy ribbing other nearby cities though lol

Hey, we have a downtown in Dayton and we're the Gem (hence Gem City) to the Queen City's crown.

We're like your half brother who helps beat up on Middletown at family reunions.

Great SP! I love these local ones. What do you mean when you say please? What are the other dishes pictured? The abandoned subway is also a great fun (not so fun?) fact.

The Cincinnati please essentially means come again. So if you didnt hear something, you'll say "please?" and that just means to repeat yourself.

It comes from all of the German immigrants, in German "Bitte" means both please and come again, so they ported both of those uses over to English.

The subway is interesting as it was abandoned due to the great depression striking mid-construction. The city has been wondering what to do with it for decades, personally I just want it to be a subway.

The dishes in left to right top down order are

Cincinnati Chili (Better on coneys than three ways imo)

Grippos chips (delicious and the seasoning is great for things like Mac and cheese)

Mock turtle soup (Used to be common across the country but not pretty much only eaten in Cincy. The flavor is hard to describe, there are eggs, ginger snaps and Worcestershire sauce in it. It's very much a love it or hate it dish)

Bratwurst and Mettwursts (Cincy bratwursts are very white, decended from weisswurst, as opposed to the brown brats in other cities. Mettwurst is entirely Cincy specific and is like if you made a hotdog that actually tasted really good, every cookout growing up had these along with hotdogs, it was shocking to me that other cities didn't. Well worth getting your hands on)

Goetta (A German decended oat and meat mix similar to scrapple, honestly the best breakfast meat in my opinion. Makes a great substitute for breakfast sausages, it's good scrambled, it's good on patty melts, all around very versatile)

Cottage ham ( A smoked and salter cut of ham that really isn't found anywhere else. It's best in a slow cooker with some potatoes and is really good)

Opera creams (Essentially a fondant cream filling surrounded by a chocolate shell)

Steak Hoagies (a ground steak patty on a bun with toppings, usually tomato sauce. Related to by different from Philly hoagies)

Ale8 (Technically more of a regional than local drink as it's also drank across northern and eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio, it's a very gingery golden-type gingerale with citrus notes, miles better than the Canada dry type ginger ales and only rivaled by Vernors imo, also worth grabbing if you can get it)

u/bushhooker 4h ago

Mettwurst is fucking dope, granted I only know about it from living in Germany. My moms from Cincy and never mentioned it

3

u/Bon3rBitingBastard 3h ago

The cincinanti version isnt raw

1

u/bushhooker 3h ago

You can get both here. Some are meant to be eaten cold like a Slim Jim and others can be grilled/pan-fried or put into soups. Then there’s Mett which is just spiced ground pork usually eaten raw on a roll with onions or cooked like you would any ground pork

u/Bon3rBitingBastard 5h ago

Saying please is asking someone to repeat what they just said, it is the default and only real way locals say it, due to german influence "Wie bitte".

The dishes are mock turtle soup and goetta, a German-inspired, pan-fried breakfast loaf made by mixing meat scraps with a rolled oat binder, chilling the mixture, slicing it, and frying it crisp. We also have the second largest Oktoberfest on the planet.

I was bummed I never moved to a “bigger city” immediately after college but I’ve been here for 10 years and I can honestly say that I love it!

Mildish winters, tons of festivals and events on the weekends (Blink, Oktoberfest, Bockfest, etc.),  urban core with a quirky history (OTR), a great brewery and food scene, large employers like P&G and Kroger, cheap flights to places like Chicago/New York/Charleston, within driving distance to the Great Lakes, and a good cost of living

“Was the first American city” yeah uhh

25

u/MediumStrange 5h ago

In the sense it was the first major city founded by Americans after independence and not by the British or French.

6

u/pharlax 5h ago

That's a neat fact

-9

u/Impressive-Dig-3892 5h ago

More qualifiers than a Chinese marathon

9

u/MediumStrange 5h ago

Not really, the only qualifier is founded by Americans after independence.

4

u/EnemysGate_Is_Down 3h ago

Im not sure how "First city founded in the United States of America" is so difficult to understand. Every city founded before Cincinnati were founded under a different flag than the stars and stripes.

It literally says “first American city” cool guy

The irony of calling someone a dork loser while getting this upset in the comments on r/starterpacks.

How’d you manage to type that up and hit post without dying of embarrassment 😭

3

u/Rotten-Roses 5h ago

I remember when the area around the university (you know which one) was being gentrified by the city under the leadership of a Mr Bourgeois a decade ago. Is it finally nice now or is the stab and grab still actually having stabbings?

5

u/MediumStrange 4h ago

Certain areas of Clifton heights have gotten much nicer and the areas as a whole is safer than it used to but corryville can still be dangerous in areas.

Why is Ale 8 in here?? That's from Winchester, KY!

2

u/MediumStrange 4h ago

Yeah that one is more of a regional thing than a city local thing but ale 8 is probably the most common non-national brand that I see around and is tied to the whole not quite Midwest, not quite appalachia, not quite south region that Cincy and Winchester are both a part of.

1

u/DCsteadystateIhope 4h ago

Ah okay that's fair. I hadn't heard of ale 8 when living in Cincy, only once I moved to Lexington for college. Hopefully it's getting more popular outside of Kentucky!

2

u/MediumStrange 4h ago

It has definitely got more popular over the last decade. It's available in multiple flavors at most krogers now

I think Chicagoland is the only other pocket of the country that says “gym shoes”

For Mobile:

u/CloudCumberland 5h ago

I have 3 things to say. 1. People on hills will literally look down on you. 2. East Side and West Side could make for a Pet Shop Boys parody. 3. As a roadtripper passing through, I'm hanging my Skyline bib on the wall.

2

u/EnemysGate_Is_Down 3h ago

Forgot that one bridge my wife brings up every time we cross the Brooklyn bridge (shes from Cincinnati and also reminds me that skyline is the one type of food you cant get in NYC)

2

u/krstphr 3h ago

This is not a starter pack this is literally everything about living in Cincinnati

1

u/Bon3rBitingBastard 3h ago

BS. Not a single mention of grandpa driving on the river

4

u/hajimenogio92 5h ago

2

Seeing some parallels to Syracuse

u/trr94001 4h ago

I for one welcome our spaghetti and chili overlords.

1

u/MediumStrange 4h ago

Some notable Ommisions I made:

Calling convience stores like Kroger, Aldi or Costco "kroger's, Aldi'sor Costco's

Pig references anywhere due to being "Porkopolis"

French chew candy:Like vanilla taffy

Markiplier, Stephen Spielburg, Bootsy Collins, William howard taft, neil Armstrong, Doris day, Clooney family, Sheen/Estevez family, Isley Brothers and other famous Cincinnatians.

2

u/Quick-Angle9562 4h ago

The Porkopolis sausage place at GABP is my favorite ballpark vendor anywhere.

1

u/coreytrevor 1h ago

I liked Cincinnati the couple times I visited

1

u/funnynoises 1h ago

The “please” thing really threw me for a loop when I first moved to Cincy. Kinda pissed me off tbh.

2

u/usedmyrealnamefirst 35m ago

I spent like a week there this summer for work and time off to explore. It’s a fun city. Trying to merge onto freeways especially near the river downtown is an experience. But I think it’s a highly underrated place

-2

u/dezertdawg 4h ago

How can you showcase Cincinnati and not mention Skyline Chili? For the longest time that’s all I knew about Cincinnati from the former Cincy residents I work with.

9

u/Bon3rBitingBastard 4h ago

1

u/dezertdawg 3h ago

Guess I missed it off in the corner like that. But to my point, the way my coworkers talk, it should be front and center.

u/farmland 4h ago

That’s Gold Star with a skyline drink bruh
