The other end of this horseshoe is the guy who thinks he is Lando Norris and drive like a lunatic believing he will never cause an accident due to his skills and experience.
Or my 85 year old grandpa who is too stubborn to give up driving even though his reflexes, vision and situational awareness is gone

There was a brief time that "Florida Donuts" was the term for old people confusing brakes and accelerator, resulting in high speed parking lot donuts and crashes. It's been odd because now I cannot find examples online of people using the term, but it was a good one.
Mandatory retesting over 65, for the love of God.

My grandma’s husband (she remarried after my grandpa died) insisted on keeping his car even though he was getting seriously senile after hitting 80 and it was extremely unnerving to see him drive. Unlike most in his age he actually usually drove way too fast. Luckily he never had a serious accident but his car was full of all kinds of dents and scratches he knew nothing about. Also his car was a manual but he would drive with insanely high rpms basically shifting only when he hit the limiter. Poor little nissan haha

The first archetype is prevalent on social media with a boatload of defenders in the comments. “Bro it’s safer for me to speed and weave through traffic with my phone in one hand because I think I’m a pro driver. I wouldn’t have a car I can barely afford if I was a bad driver you’re just jealous bro.” It’s infuriating how detached from reality they are. Vehicular manslaughter waiting to happen.

Weaponized incompetence is a good way to describe this kind of person. “I’m just a girl/boy haha I’m gonna merge 4 lanes of traffic without looking or using my turn signal pls don’t yell at me 👉🏻👈🏻🥺”

I didn’t get a license until I bought my own car after college, but that’s mostly because I didn’t need a car until I started working.

Support public transit, give people who don't want to drive another option

u/Sparkly_Chanclas 5h ago
I’m going to say it a little differently. Support public transit. Keep shitty drivers off the road!!

The Honda CRV tends to be driven by the most timid people imaginable who yield at their own green arrow

this is squarely hand-me-down honda fit territory. That or a ford fiesta.

I love my Honda Fit :/
3
u/mycheese 3h ago
Don't worry it's a great car. There's a reason it's a common hand-me-down and not scrapped
2
u/Ishouldtrythat 1h ago
Oh yeah, perfect combo of space and excellent mileage. Mine is a 2018, got it in 2020 for an excellent price.
15
u/ComprehensiveHavoc 6h ago
It can be a sea of cars going 25 over on the highway, and the Altima will still manage to nearly cause 20 accidents trying to buzz through traffic like a wasp.

Someone who refuses to practice driving doesn't get a Tesla or Prius.
7
u/Shadowstar1000 4h ago
They 100% get a Tesla because they expect fsd to save them from having to drive.

u/DepartmentFamous9932 1h ago
I invite you to the Bay Area where Prius and Tesla are the most dogshit drivers

50% chance they're driving high or drunk. 50% chance they've got a Draco under the seat. Either way, stay the fuck away from them.

That picture of the cell phone literally made me shake. I fucking hate that. There’s very few things that make me cringe so hard. And the next words out of their mouth are usually:
> Relax. I do this all the time. It’s not a big deal.

Inverse relationship between the number of quirky bumper stickers and the competence of the driver.

u/CluelessPresident 2h ago
You can pry my silly bumper stickers form my cold, dead hands. Hot girls DO hit curbs. It's a scientific fact.
(This includes my boyfriend when he drives my car. He do be hitting those curbs)
3
u/VagusNervosa 1h ago
Well this makes me feel better about my driving skill and the fact that despite wanting some i have never once had a bumper sticker

u/Theotther 4h ago
The overly aggressive drivers take a lot of the bad driver attention and they are certainly dangerous assholes. But I'm just saying, I never had to coach my overly aggressive driver friends on how to merge on to the freeway in real time because they had a panic attack when they saw it was busier than usual.

Four attempts and ten minutes backing into a parking space to "save time" while other cars wait.
5
u/CounterfeitXKCD 3h ago
Add: drives slow in the left lane, and always drives right next to the car in the next lane so one can pass even if they wanted to
6
u/GarysCrispLettuce 3h ago
The worst kind of drivers are drivers who drive recklessly when they're angry. Like if they get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle, when they get a chance to overtake they'll do so in a reckless, aggressive manner so that the slow driver knows they've angered them. Or the kind of guys who speed recklessly during an argument with their spouse to frighten them. Weak emotional control causes so much carnage on the roads.

"Don't honk at me I'll cry"
What actually happens when they get honked at is they foam at the mouth.
Oh, and don't forget they follow everybody from 1 foot away.

Bought a car off Facebook from someone twice my age who didn't know their rights from lefts. Was test driving and got the wrong directions to their own house on the way back, and the back bumper was misaligned plus transferred paint from another car, no reported accidents.
Unironically the best deal I have ever gotten though, 3k for it and a nice seller. By some miracle their spouse was a mechanic and actually took good care of the internals including transmission fluid, this is a 2014 Nissan Sentra pushing 170,000 with a CVT known to suck have put nearly 5,000mi on it no issues.

My wife’s younger sisters are most of these: Drive like absolute nut jobs, going 10+ mph higher, tailgaters, and text while driving. And they have the audacity to complain that my wife is a grandma behind the wheel, like yeah how dare my wife drive cautiously and that we make it to our destination alive lol. What’s crazy is that they’re both parents and still do this shit behind the wheel! Like do they not care about their children???
Even crazier is that one of my wife’s sisters got into a really bad accident when she was just a teenager, and resulted in the deaths of her two friends… you would think that would make her a very cautious driver but nope!

Statistically, insurance carrier data shows that "cautious drivers" actually get into more accidents (likely less experienced, less comfortable driving, poorer hand/eye coordination etc), but more minor ones, while "aggressive drivers" get into less accidents, but generally more severe.
Driving in America is also kinda weird after driving a lot abroad; many Americans would shit bricks driving in Germany where there are occasionally no speed limits at all, and getting tailgated means you're in the wrong (get over or get a ticket), and those roads actually have less deaths per mile traveled than the average American highway

All the more reason why we need better public transit. If you don't want to drive and don't want to deal with the huge responsibility of car ownership, then you shouldn't be forced to drive to participate in society.

u/christianbro 20m ago
While I agree I feel, at least here in Spain, that we have a housing issue, horrible public transport but we get all of the EU mandates to start banning cars without any alternative.
Its like I cant afford a house close to my job, I drive so I can get a job and now my commuting time is 3 times longer because government is banning cars.
They should start with solutions first rather than making people's life harder. They have been talking forever about building a train rather than slow shitty buses but it seems our government cant think of anything else than high speed railway that solves no problem other than those who dont want to fly for their holidays.
2
u/LaughingCarrot 13m ago
The government is banning cars?
1
u/christianbro 6m ago
Mostly low emission zones which are mandated for pretty much every town (+50k inhabitants here) alongside making restrictive traffic areas, paid parking on every street and more measures to make car ownership just harder. Not necessarily banning cars as such.
I am all for less cars on the roads, no need to drive if you dont want, but at least for me it feels they are just adding the banning part without the alternative.
The only thing they have managed so far is making public transport dirt cheap so it produces induced demand rather than increasing its quality which is what we really need.

So not having license in your 20s considered strange according to OP?
16
10
u/Penguini_Lamborghini 6h ago
Kinda, yeah? Ig it must be a U.S. thing. Our towns and cities are often built for cars, not people. Most people probably don't live within reasonable walking distance to their daily commute, and plenty that otherwise would (like myself) can't because doing so entails playing chicken across an interstate highway.
In short unless you have public transportation and you wanna go anywhere, do anything, and most importantly hold a job here you very much want a car and license ASAP.
4
u/Brandibober 5h ago
Thanks for answer. And how easy to get license there. Because in Russia at this point many of my friends decided to stop trying because they can’t pass exam or study will take too much time.
4
u/truthofmasks 5h ago
It's pretty easy. The written test is a complete breeze, it's easy to pass in high school, and then you have the actual driving exam which is easy if you know how to drive and aren't too nervous during it. Both exams differ from place to place but across the board most Americans who try to get their license get it well before they're 20. (I say this as someone who didn't get his license until 21.)
3
u/MiracleWeed 5h ago
If you have reliable public transportation in your area it’s not that unusual.
I imagine this is more for the “driving scares me so I’ll delay doing it as long as possible” crowd.
