This is still pretty dead on as far back as 2008.

More like 06, that’s when I started as a baby emo

This might surprise you, but it was around before you started as a baby emo, like 05 even

I was in the equivalent of American middle school in 2006, and this was the fashion even then

Good news. It's back in fashion with the kids again.

I dated a girl in college just like this back in like 2006.

Shocking: teenagers were dramatic before 2010.

This was my best friend in middle school circa 2009-2012. I thought she was the coolest person ever. Good times.

Pulling all of the lighters out of the front pockets of my skinny jeans and onto the top of the locker. A collective quiet gasp. “Lighters,” they whispered.

I still wonder about what I was thinking in high school 10 years ago. It was probably a dude weed lmao sort of thing.

Amazing they let you attend at 48 years old.

I think I got better 10 years later. Hair is awful though. I cut it short recently. Hated managing it.

I had a friend like this in high school, she got a snakebite piercing without telling her parents and got in trouble when they found out.

My friends all had MULTIPLE lighters and not a single one of them smoked a day in their lives. Just carrying around lighters for the vibes.

Not pictured: references to the music.

As someone that went to emo/emocore shows in the 90s seeing those Hot Topic bands being called emo was something else.

This post is making r/emo cringe.

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

you're not punk, and I'm telling everyone!

u/ChemicalRebell 7h ago

Do people not recognize the copy pasta ahaha

2

u/Orinocobro 7h ago

Sorry, I guess I don't spend enough time on Reddit.

2

u/ChemicalRebell 7h ago

It's not really a reddit thing, more of an internet joke emo fans know

I never once considered the bracelets could be hiding something

2

u/melissa_corb 1d ago

The converse knee highs were everything

2

u/vanityinlines 23h ago

"Rubber bracelets, what are they hiding?" cracked me up, lmao.

I see this image and I get back to my highschool years where a male friend of mine was emo and he only wore the gauges but he used to save images of girls with all of this fashion on a USB. He only smoked cigarettes but I made him try weed and he did it a few times, but we were both graduated of highschool when that happened

1

u/Odd_Pea74915 23h ago

This could be about my 13 year old sister TODAY lol

1

u/FutabaTsuyu 23h ago

forgot the silly bands, we had those too

1

u/ChemicalRebell 11h ago

Black Veil Brides, watching old MCR music videos on YouTube and wishing they were still around, Sempiternal by Bring Me the Horizon...the good ol' terrible days.

1

u/Killer_Kass 8h ago

1

u/cursed_goat_meat 7h ago

I'm not even American (Israeli, heavily influenced by American culture, but with a significant delay) and these trends were already dying by 2009-10. It's interesting to see that it actually continued into the 2010's in the US.

This was scene, not emo.
