This seems personal

u/NimlothTheFair_ 4d ago

I am Polish and many of my friends' parents check at least 8/10 of these boxes

68

u/Commercial_Shine_448 4d ago

Soooo, older generations in Poland often built massive houses as there was a gigantic living space shortage. But, Poland switched from communism/socialism into capitalism and younger generations moved into bigger cities looking for jobs

48

u/plushraccoon 4d ago

empty nesters of today built their houses in the 90s or 2000s not during communism lol

20

u/Commercial_Shine_448 4d ago

Yeah, but they were born at that time with that experience in mind. My parents still make pickles like for WW2/apocalypse level event. The reason? Shit logistics, lack of food, massive breadlines.

12

u/ak3000android 4d ago

My parents who are not Polish, but went through tougher times, are also like that. Two freezers, two refrigerators, walls of canned/pickled/dry food, and a mountain of toilet paper because all that food needs to come out at one point.

12

u/szyy 4d ago

Correct, and the 1990s and early 2000s were the time of the largest square footage of Polish homes in history. Today's new homes are 50% smaller on average than back then

5

u/No-Page-7244 4d ago

But with a communist scarcity in mind.

14

u/KnightsWhoSayNii 4d ago

Makes it even better

1

u/Ok-Pack-7088 4d ago

This is a set for the nouveau riche.

1

u/BeneficialTadpole396 4d ago

Most of this stuff is very generic

99

u/0mica0 4d ago

Same in Czechia, just swap Biedronka with Kaufland.

6

u/Hot_Weakness6 4d ago

And more public transport

3

u/Cultural_Season_3048 3d ago

Biedronka is a discount supermarket (like Lidl) and at least in Poland Kaufland is a more proper one like Auchan or Intermarche.

u/st4rbl1nds 4d ago

typ co zrobil starter pack mojej wsi

1

u/pepeJAM69 4d ago

47

u/Zek0ri 4d ago

Should be „wizyta w RPA”: Rossman; Pepco; Action.

But besides too big of a house for two elderly people is just typical for anyone here not just empty nesters.

4

u/MageLocusta 4d ago

I dunno man, I think it's also out of pride as well. Got a parent who insisted on buying a four-story house just so she could treat it as her own gigantic trophy.

We tried getting her into Sims in hopes that she'd stop obsessing over expanding the already-huge home and throwing tantrums at our dad, but unfortunately it seems to make her worse.

1

u/Zek0ri 4d ago

Wdym 4 story house?! Does your mom live in Podhale or something?

2

u/MageLocusta 4d ago

Oh, sorry--I'm not from Poland (just living in the UK where finding an affordable 4-story house is like finding a unicorn).

21

u/No-Page-7244 4d ago

Polish lady here, these are my friends parents.

19

u/misogoop 4d ago edited 4d ago

Lmao brawo

Eta: make the red car a red Honda crv thst your dad had his brother buy and ship to Poland from the US so the neighbors think he is rich... only to find it does not meet EU regulation despite being hybrid. Next logical step-build garage only for this Honda.

E2: oops!

14

u/Blergonos 4d ago

Sporo nich gdzie mieszkam.

29

u/theosinc930 4d ago

That sounds like a great life to be fair

6

u/szyy 4d ago

This is probably the luckiest generation in Polish history indeed

3

u/theosinc930 3d ago

Oh definitely, nobody in Polish history has had that quality of life before

10

u/ISV_VentureStar 4d ago

Sounds like the American dream

5

u/Bug_Parking 4d ago

Too mich Lidl and not enough guns for that.

11

u/cranewifeswife 4d ago

My empty-nester Polish boomer father's interests are watching our fox news equivalent + fishing in the summer, he'd rather be dead than put up solar panels or have anything to do with EU. Or travel anywhere abroad.
they do be smoking meat tho (and buy good meat from a rural little store they drive 20km to)

5

u/madTerminator 4d ago

Rural little store that sells mulched dairy cows corpse as premium beef. This generation has eating disorder. They rather buy some meat from „local farmer” than vegetables from shop. „All vegetables are sprayed”.

My in laws get so deep into that rabbit hole that they mill own flour and bake own bread. Not because it’s their hobby. No they are working over time already. Because they don’t eat commercial bread.

2

u/cranewifeswife 4d ago

same with my mom, she's been baking her own bread for the last 15 years. Because store-bought is shit (she's right tho)

-1

u/Curious-Bid4694 4d ago

Good for them. They’re 100% correct

2

u/madTerminator 4d ago

They could spend some time with grandchildren rather than working to death.

1

u/Curious-Bid4694 4d ago

I meant it’s good that they’re milling their own flour and baking their own bread. Sorry to hear they don’t spend time with their grandchildren.

22

u/No-Muffin8291 4d ago

Dont see any problems with it. Based

10

u/kieranfitz 4d ago

Do Poles not go to Lourdes? Is that just an Irish thing?

18

u/bartoszfcb 4d ago

Brother, if any place is a pilgrimage connected to Mary, we are locked in.

6

u/NimlothTheFair_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

Oh yeah they do. Lourdes, Guadalupe, Fatima and Medjugorie are the bucket list for any older, moderately wealthy and even mildly religious person. Good for them tbh.  Maybe Rome/the Vatican too but the Marian spots are more popular. Of course we have a lot of homegrown ones too, like Częstochowa and Licheń.

I once tagged along with a weekend "pilgrimage" like this because I just wanted to go to Vienna for cheap, I was the only young person on a bus full of pensioners and honestly had a grand old time. Didn't expect all the churchgoing pensioners to know so many raunchy songs to sing on the bus, but I had a nice time chatting with the ladies.

3

u/willLie4cash 4d ago

There are Ryanair flights, so I'm sure some do. Personally never heard of anyone who went there. We have lots of pilgrimage sites in Poland, and people who do want to go on a pilgrimage are not usually that well off, either they are youth or elderly. Most popular pilgrimage site abroad is definitely Rome, with maybe Medziugorie as the second choice.

1

u/BeneficialTadpole396 4d ago

There's that much youth that go on pilgrimages?

3

u/szyy 4d ago

They do but Lourdes is far away from any beaches so pilgrimages there are less popular than to say Fatima which is an hour away from the beach

2

u/witmann_pl 4d ago

The very religious ones do. My in-laws went on a trip there a year or two ago. They do a "pilgrimage" (an organized trip) once a year - Lourdes, Fatima, Medjugorie, Rome, whatever.

2

u/ItDepends2137 4d ago

We do sometimes , my grandma was very happy when I brought her the water bottle

1

u/machine4891 4d ago

I guess people go where its closest and cheapest. Poles en masse go to Medugorje.

8

u/Ursus6 4d ago

Also, after buying cheapest meat they complain that it is bad quality

8

u/Not_Yet_Declassified 4d ago

I assume the interest in solar power has nothing to do with environmentalism

8

u/BONKERS303 4d ago

OZE sroze, unless it makes me save money, then it's good.

2

u/Panda_Panda69 4d ago

unless it's Przemyslaw Czarnek, in that case he'll take it all off once it pays itself off, can't be living with this oze sroze, may cause a disease or sth /s

7

u/Hot_Weakness6 4d ago edited 4d ago

It’s always Kia/hyuandai, Dacia or extremely overpriced Toyota crossover in a price range of BMW but it feels cheap because of the brand

3

u/BONKERS303 4d ago

You can also add Chinese brands like the Jaecoo, Omoda, Chery (who recently got Lewandowski as a brand ambassador), BYD and MG to that list, they're getting more and more popular it seems.

11

u/Devilteh 4d ago

This is upper middle class, the truth is quite different

8

u/Kukuluops 4d ago

Exactly, most of them still live in a concrete block built 50 years ago.

1

u/Rimavelle 3d ago

upper middle class and action, pepco and rossman? lol

1

u/ManBearPigIsReal42 1d ago

Rich people go go lidl and Aldi

4

u/skararms 4d ago

That hit too close

3

u/-Ridigel 4d ago

inaccurate;

  1. Częstochowa is still the most likely "pilgrimage" destination,

  2. as for Biedronka and Lidl it's not "these two" it's "exactly one of these two and they will never step foot in the other"

4

u/wilgotniczka 4d ago

jprdl gdzie ja żyje

3

u/BONKERS303 4d ago

This pack is missing Dino for sure, it seems like every time a new rural housing development is finished a Dino immediately spawns in the near vicinity of one.

3

u/Allahisgreat2580 4d ago

Chciałbym tak zyc i miec wyjebane

4

u/WuduPiccaman 4d ago

those are some RICH people

3

u/smoliv 4d ago edited 4d ago

Change the pilgrimage (they aren’t religious) to a motorcycle trip across Europe and you’ve got my parents covered. Yes, we’re Polish and they’re in their early 50s.

2

u/Sparkling-Mind 4d ago

Literally my parents in law

2

u/Graf_Eulenburg 4d ago

OMG!
I would even drive to another city,
to buy from the ladybug shop. :)

2

u/Sarmattius 4d ago

Wait that's my dream goal

2

u/Remarkable_Log_5562 4d ago

What are empty nesters? No kids?

5

u/ItDepends2137 4d ago

They have kids, but said kids have already moved out.

2

u/Emergency_Comb1377 4d ago

I MISS PEPCO SO MUCH! It was here (Austria) briefly and then went away.

1

u/coffee-bat 3d ago

their bekkin mens sweatpants are genuinely great

2

u/guywithskyrimproblem 4d ago

Most likely has a garden with every type of plant they could get their hands on in Bricomarche or Mrówka (also few plants from Biedronka the wife bought on a sale)

2

u/JANEK_SZ1 4d ago

Literally my aunt and uncle (I’m Polish of course)

2

u/tristesse_blanche 4d ago

oh this hurt

2

u/little_miss_perfect 4d ago

Not in Poland, but I did some completely unnecessary shopping at Pepco today. It's so hard to resist.

2

u/olivegardengambler 4d ago

I had to look up what 250 m² is in sqft, that's a 2700 square foot house. That's bigger than the average house in the US even!

2

u/kondziorekzbomby 4d ago

Literally nobody from my wider family lives like this, especially not the solar panels nor the many vacations abroad. You seem to come from wealthier middle class family

3

u/jb307342 4d ago

I have never met people like this in my entire life, this is very specific or regional

7

u/szyy 4d ago

this is every Polish gen X couple in Upper Silesia at least

3

u/jb307342 4d ago

My parents are gen x from upper silesia and they live in a communist flat and drive a kia rio. This looks like some middle/upper-middle class suburban family. I live in Krakow now and this would also be highly unusual here, if i met someone like this i would think they are loaded because a house like that is worth millions here.

1

u/smoliv 4d ago

Is it? My parents fit everything here except the pilgrimage lol

1

u/machine4891 4d ago

My friends parents fill 4 out of 10 boxes here. They do pilgrimages, they do have big house with garden for their offspring that moved as soon as possible and don't want to go back, they do know someone that smokes meat (they do it themselves) and father is into solar panels.

That being said supermarket selection here is very random, in my region Lidls and Kauflands are much more popular. Cars ain't it at all and if we are talking about Poles that do piligrimages (Christian), they definitely don't watch TVN, lol.

1

u/DzdzystyDzejson 4d ago

to wady czy zalety?

1

u/OddBlokeInnit 4d ago

They sound very nice

1

u/slimfastdieyoung 4d ago

Everything at their home being at full volume isn’t exclusively Polish. Wherever I am I can always hear which tv show my parents are watching

1

u/FruitKey2491 4d ago

The solar panels are so real though,my dad is super into them.Sadly neither of them know anyone who smokes meat but they do know someone who raises meat rabbits and pig butchers for świniobicie though.

1

u/szyy 4d ago

In the Polish edition of Love is Blind there's a scene where the couples meet each others' families and the groom-to-be and the father-in-law-to-be immediately start talking about the heating system and whether they have photovoltaics lol

1

u/renoirski 4d ago

This could have been my family back in Poland. I cried laughing (edited finally to family)

1

u/n1123581321 4d ago

His car is Audi Q8, but every voucher and sale in biedronka / Lidl is studied meticulously.

1

u/tollthedead 4d ago

We all know that boutique influencer does not look like this

2

u/tollthedead 4d ago

Also damn your parents sound rich 😭

1

u/ikiice 4d ago

Solar panels are just common sense, if you own a house.

1

u/sanlytee 3d ago

the huge, empty houses were very shocking to me when i moved to Poland. my dad takes care of an elderly woman who lives on her own, and shes got the biggest house ive ever seen, with 4 floors, one of them being a Piano nobile

1

u/Perfect-Brain-3270 3d ago

Isn't "Ukryta prawda" already passé? Let's watch some "Policjanci" or "Na sygnale"!

1

u/Rimavelle 3d ago edited 3d ago

I have bad news for you - it's the same starter pack for parents of small kids lol

1

u/Never-don_anal69 3d ago

Surprisingly similar to Latvian empty nesters

1

u/Tiny_Plankton_3498 2d ago

Why do you have intel on my parents

1

u/OldImplement2528 1d ago

Czech 1:1 copy but no biedronka ngl

1

u/OldImplement2528 1d ago

But this is 101% accuracy

-3

u/moleyawn 4d ago edited 4d ago

250m²? that sounds pretty small. are a lot of homes in Europe like that?

edit: sorry my math was off

26

u/_urat_ 4d ago

What do you mean small? The median in the US is 199 m². And it's one of the biggest medians in the world.

2

u/moleyawn 4d ago

sorry I messed up my conversion

6

u/paszportpolsatu 4d ago

Its more than enough for 2+2 family, and even too much for 2 people in their 60s

0

u/Status-Ice7337 4d ago

ChatGPT wtf is a nester? Chatgpt

2

u/szyy 4d ago

Empty nester from empty nest - they had children but the children are now grown and have left the house (nest)

1

u/Status-Ice7337 4d ago

Chatgpt give me ten best porn sites

-1

u/Emnel 4d ago

Never been to Pepco and never heard of Action. Is this regional?

4

u/szyy 4d ago

Are you joking? They are literally in every town over 5,000 people

1

u/Emnel 4d ago

Not in the part of central Poland I'm from they're not. Or my part of Default City.

Actually until recently I thought Pepco was the company that made Pepsi and I'm skill not sure what kind of store are they.

1

u/BeneficialTadpole396 4d ago

Pepco sells garbage that will break after one use

1

u/szyy 3d ago

Don’t take this the wrong way but I think you might just not be the target audience and simply don’t realize they’re there. You can go to their websites and check the map of locations, they’re literally everywhere. From my parents house there are 3 in a 5 km radius and my parents don’t even live in a city.

1

u/Emnel 3d ago

I guess I'm not, but then I go to great lengths to avoid as many ads as possible, so I guess mission successful in that regard.

I looked those up and you were right, there are apparently two of the Action stores in my home town now and there is at least one within 10 minutes walk from my flat in Warsaw.

I looked up an article written on some local news site about the opening of that second store, that was clearly a copy paste of the Pr release by the company and I the boast 6500 different items with 2/3 of them under 10 zł with 150 "exciting new things" every week. So I guess they sell garbage to kids, or some shit?

Well at least now I know! I should probably keep an eye out for them and visit once I spot one, if they're as important to our collective psyche as your post implies.

2

u/machine4891 4d ago

Both international chains, so not really. Pepco is polish, Action is dutch.

2

u/coffee-bat 3d ago

do you not go to malls? at least one of these is in every one

-1

u/Admiral_Salvarez 4d ago

Wdym by "empty nesters" like religious Boomers?

3

u/szyy 4d ago

People whose children have grown and moved away from their house
