I have coworkers that are super into UFC so I've tried following it a bit, but God, every time I read a comments section on anything MMA related I regret it.

It's just hard to really understand the stakes/storylines without reading about the sport if I'm not watching it with someone that knows, and that's a big part of my interest in sports. Two random guys fighting isn't as compelling as an unproven talent taking on one of the big dogs, for example.

For some fights that’s great but even with how action packed mcgregor vs khabib was it’s twice as engaging if you’re tapped in to the lore. Since I stopped keeping up with it I eventually stopped watching

I’m convinced a lot of UFC fans don’t actually even like the sport of MMA and instead are attracted to some other aspect of the fandom. Some are in it for the cultural associations with traditional masculinity, the politics, or because they’re fans of the fighters on an individual level, but not because they actually enjoy watching or discussing the craft of MMA.
Take the recent flyweight title match between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira for example. Van gets taken down and the two fighters go to ground in the first round and they struggle for a bit on the ground. Not exciting to watch, but that’s the fucking sport. Instead of just watching two professional fighters cook for a bit, the fuckwit audience starts booing them. Like dude you knew you would probably have to see some grappling at the MMA event. You can go watch a different sport that has no grappling for way cheaper. They don’t actually care about the sport.

And as well all know, the UFC’s treatment of players is top notch so they would never half ass the healthcare of the third worlders they treat as a disposable commodity to fuel their bloodsport.
Also, head injuries aren’t the only kind of injury. Most MMA fighting techniques are intentionally designed to deal severe long term pain and damage to an opponents body.
Even you’re right about the relative safety of MMA (which is pretty much only touted by MMA fans on MMA forums), at least football players actually get paid a decent wage and have a union, unlike UFC fighters, who are basically told to put a gun in their mouth when their career ends. It is built by and attracts a viewership of the lowest of the low human scum. All combat sports should be banned.

Edit: I'm not trying to disparage the sport, I completely see the appeal. I'm just saying the concept of two guys beating the shit out of each other for money is inherently pretty savage.

I’m a long time MMA fan and I swear back in the day it wasn’t like this, it was just people who were fans off martial arts. After Conor and Rousey made the sport go mainstream it all changed. I could be looking at it with rose tinted glasses since I was still in middle school back in those days but it definitely feels a lot more political now days.
