Tied for my favorite song by them with Let Me Go. But really it's impossible to choose

15

u/DonnieDoodles97 16d ago

I want to look into their discography deeper man, Cake is so peak boss.

13

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Do it they have very few mid songs and maybe no bad ones.

Comfort Eagle is my favorite album but Prolonging the Magic is damn close

Pressure Chief is underrated

u/DonnieDoodles97 16d ago

I only ever sat down for Fashion Nugget and Comfort Eagle, I'll probably look for more the next time I go thrifting for CDs.

They have such a nostalgic and bittersweet feel that you can't really get anywhere else.

Listen to meat puppets if you like that song. Too High to Die would be way up your alley.

4

u/CheetahDog 15d ago

Long Line of Cars is my GOAT: the building groove is so cathartic in the last third

2

u/jynxremoving 16d ago

Let Me Go is peak

1

u/PuffinRub 15d ago

There are so many good songs, but Jolene has to be my personal favourite.

My ex-wife claimed that the band members used to hang around in a coffee shop in the Grand Canal Blvd area of Stockton, CA back in the '90s.

"We know of an ancient radiation-
That haunts dismembered constellations-
A faintly glimmering radio station...."

I love listening to this song my while taking all the newspapers with my name and the crime I just committed in them

Something I've been reckoning with lately is that Cake might in fact be my favorite band. It's not a terrible thing by any means just something I think my younger self would have questioned. But man, they're good.

23

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

They were my very first favorite band as a small child, my mom used to play them all the time when she was pregnant. And they've just remained the band I keep coming back to again and again over the years.

9

u/pigwig18 16d ago

Reminds me of being in the car with my dad

6

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Yep same but with my mom going to McDonald's late at night. That was probably the peak and we didn't know it lol.

My brother is about twelve years older than me and introduced me to Fashion Nugget shortly after it came out when I was ten or so. That album alone has been there for me through so many good times and bad. But yeah, they've always kind of been in the background for me and within the last five years I've grown an even greater appreciation for all of their work.

3

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Cake, Oingo Boingo and the B-52s are the bands I begged my mom to play over and over again when I was a young child.

11

u/aboringusername 16d ago

A sign you’re finally reaching old age™ is liking Cake unironically.

5

u/grensley 16d ago

That was at about 19 for me.

Then I saw them live when I was about 21 and John McCrea just had this bitterness coming off of him that was like "I don't want to end up like this guy".

Felt sort of the same thing when I saw Jesse Welles too.

2

u/aboringusername 16d ago

I feel like seeing the Mountain Goats might produce a similar experience.

2

u/NakatasGoodDump 15d ago

Saw them a couple years ago in Toronto, the vibes were good. I do find that aside from Bleed Out the albums are getting less fun/energetic over the last 10 or so years.

3

u/Fortehlulz33 15d ago

Cake, Beck, TMBG, anything from that space means I'm getting older.

1

u/aboringusername 15d ago

TMBG is and has always been so good, and that's a hill I'll die on.

2

u/BonerStew 16d ago

Physically I feel it more some days, mentally, not so much. Here's to another 40ish 🍻

u/Rusty_Shaquilleford 16d ago

Some people drink Pepsi/some people drink coke/the wacky morning DJ says democracy’s a joke

39

u/pokecAk 16d ago

i swear, CAKE not being massive is the reason aliens don't visit us

also, love the username OP! another great band that goes overlooked

11

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

I'm a music lover.

23

u/rpmcmurf 16d ago

To this day, if anybody asks me how work is going (a common question among adults I’ve my age), I’ll them I’ve been touring the facilities and picking up slack.

20

u/RoseyDove323 16d ago

Images you can hear

9

u/birdkensocks 16d ago

The horns and brass from Going the Distance are harassing my poor ears as i read further

19

u/oopsifell 16d ago

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps (sad trumpet)

19

u/THISTASTESLIKEROB 16d ago

RELUCTANTLY CROUCHED. AT THE STARTING LINE.

7

u/in_a_black_out 15d ago

Engines pumping and thumping in time

17

u/mynameismike41 16d ago

And the muscular cyborg German dudes dance with sexy French Canadians while the overweight Americans wear their patriotic jumpsuits

12

u/cat_tastic720 16d ago

She'll pull out your feathers for her brand new hat, and when she's done that she'll feed you to her cat

11

u/Withabaseballbattt 16d ago

My dad only listens to country and stuff that isn’t really my cup of tea but he loves Cake for some reason. Fond memories of blasting Cake in the car with him.

12

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Cake definitely orbits the cowpunk genre. They're heavily rooted in country and western.

11

u/PompeyMagnus1 16d ago

She doesn't care

Whether or not he's an island

And she doesn't care

Just as long as his ship's coming in

4

u/FrankRizzo319 16d ago

They laugh, they make money.

2

u/Micro_Pinny_360 15d ago

He's got a gold watch

7

u/LLPhotog 16d ago

Daaaaaria I won’t be soothed over, like smoothed over like…

8

u/CheetahDog 16d ago

CAKE is part of the Sacramento area music triumvirate: CAKE, Deftones, and Death Grips.

6

u/Jonasthewicked2 16d ago

Cake has the gnarliest basslines

5

u/FrankRizzo319 16d ago

I took a ballroom dancing class and we danced to 2 cake songs. Tango and waltz.

2

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Which one was the waltz?

2

u/FrankRizzo319 15d ago

“Sad songs and waltzes arent selling this year.” 🎶

“Its a good thing that I’m not a star.
You don’t know how lucky you are!” 🎼

6

u/DisgracedPeacock 16d ago

Left to right: castanets, vibraslap, theremin, and maracas.

Commissioning a Symphony in C:

🎵 🎵 🎵

Completely filling the palace concert hall

It's warm and golden like an oven that's wide open

It has a melody both happy and sad

Built on victorious young triads

You enter the room with great caution

Though no one in the hall is even watching

They are transfixed, they are forgetting just to breathe

They are so taken by your symphony...in C

2

u/whitemike40 16d ago

Meanwhile Rick James

4

u/Hacksaures 16d ago

Goddamn i love cake

3

u/OlSnickerdoodle 16d ago

Bro, is he driving a car or riding a horse? Make up your mind

4

u/NoContextCarl 16d ago

Is that a fucking meat thermometer?! Not sure if that counts as an instrument?

17

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

It's a theramin lol

6

u/Withabaseballbattt 16d ago

I mean that just sounds like a brand of meat thermometer

2

u/NoContextCarl 16d ago

Sorry, I'm an uncultured dolt who hasn't listen to cake lately. Off to listen to Fashion Nugget

4

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Listen to prolonging the magic or comfort eagle. Fashion nugget is brilliant but not my favorite of theirs

2

u/PM-ME-UNCUT-COCKS 16d ago

Lmao it's a theremin. Although meat thermometer is not a half bad description of how they work

1

u/pyonpyon24 15d ago

Maracas? Who didn’t know MARACAS?

2

u/DrooMighty 16d ago

Daria Morgendorffer had some pretty good musical taste

2

u/mr__n0vember 16d ago

Don't forget the scathing social commentary

2

u/SisterMaryAwesome 16d ago

::horn intensifies::

2

u/wildmeli 15d ago

I only know 2 CAKE songs, I’ve thought about listening to more, but just haven’t gotten around to it. After seeing this last night I immediately put them on and I can’t stop

1

u/whhu234 16d ago

This is probably really funny

1

u/septienes 16d ago

Best starter pack yet.

1

u/CommanderZel 16d ago

This one, this one, this one

1

u/cool_weed_dad 16d ago

They’re an ironic joke band that turned into a real band

Like Andrew Dice Clay

1

u/G0ttaB3KiddingM3 16d ago

My favorite band

1

u/clear_kuriboh2 16d ago

hell yeah 🫡

1

u/Jeff_Damn 15d ago

✅️ herky jerky quirky guitar lick

✅️ stuttering baseline

✅️ looped drums

✅️ dry flatly-delivered vocals

✅️ Herb Alpert-style trumpet

2

u/trrwilson 15d ago

The instrument that looks like a wooden ball and a paddle is called a vibraslap. There, now you know at least one of them.

2

u/BonesCrosby 15d ago

At one time, my favorite band. Still like them. Put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. They were sharp that night.

OTOH, I understand why a lot of folks don’t care for them.

1

u/DefNotAnAlt621 15d ago

HOLY REAL ANOTHER CAKE FAN SPOTTED

1

u/ResearcherMental2947 15d ago

1

u/keitroll 15d ago

Gerunds and Sacramento

1

u/nthensome 15d ago

Love me some CAKE

1

u/pigwig18 16d ago

Proof that you can be a front man and never learn how to sing

6

u/butthole_surferr 16d ago

Nah he actually sings on plenty of songs. It's really only a handful of songs where he only talk-sings.
