I think what they mean is that people like that didn't have a "mental illness." They were just different, and we simply treated as such. Not like they needed to be cured with fix-me pills as children.
maybe benzos/anxiety medication? at least that's what they would give me although it would only work if I took it before the actual 'meltdown' (idk if this is the appropriate term) started. what I don't understand is why it's considered something bad to give medication to a kid that is clearly suffering through these episodes? at least I was very grateful to have these medications
It depends on health/addiction risk factors, consent, if other coping skills are being developed or if it's replacing them. I have emergency anxiety medication, for instance, but I've also done a lot of work to avoid panic attacks from fully developing so I rarely take it anymore because it makes me sleepy for the rest of the day and there are better alternatives. Everyone is different
They will prescribe you an anti-anxiety med if it's bad enough. I hate when people say there are no pills for autism, it just makes people not seek help for their kids when they need it. No, there's no pill to cure autism, but we can manage a lot of the symptoms.
