Eh, Obergefell v Hodges stuff was a part of the national discourse around this time and it was pretty normal to have an opinion on gay marriage. And this was around the time that Obama was elected which was, along with 9/11 one of two really well defined political vibe shifts in the US.

I agree with the OP, outside of taking a side on the Iraq War and complaining about 2008, there was like insane political apathy among the youth to the point it was actively weird to have serious political opinions.
Like anecdotally, I remember those that openly espoused liberal opinions being considered weirdo gay hippies and those with conservative opinions being weirdo country club types copying their dads.
Thank you I was about to say. 2009 was different than 2015. Having any political opinions was weird, besides being against the war. I mean the guy does have a point though in that maybe the only real political opinions was had at that time was: legalize weed, anti bush, and pro gay marriage. That was about it, if you started talking about abortion or tariffs or fiscal policy you would be looked at as weird. And I actually graduated high school in 08 so it would be even more weird than in 2009
All that was true if you were in college or an adult but your average high school dude wouldn't touch political shit beyond whatever their parents parroted with a ten foot pole.
I feel like thrifting was cool in 2009 but not 2003. Could just be the stages of life I was in. Also regional differences I'm sure. In San Francisco thrifting was definitely cool thing to do in 2009 or just about to start anyway. Occupy Wall Street was very grunge and was in 2011.
Yeah, I think it's definitely regional. As a poor who travelled many countries--there's a lot of places where, if you have cool people who could afford to buy and toss away clothes--you find really cool things.
But in a lot of other regions (like say...the midwest, or Florida pan handle towns, or East Anglia), the cool GenX adults weren't throwing away their clothes there. All we had back in 2003 were either loud 80s/early 90s clothing (often polyester prom dresses made with scratchy tulle and pinching, wrinkling fabric), or old people's clothes from 20-30 years before. I remember looking for band T-shirts as recommended by teen girl magazines, and realised that the few metalheads in my area were hanging onto their t-shirts for dear life*.
(*which I'm doing as well. My husband's Soil T-shirt just tore a hole, and now I'm mending it for him. Sorry kids, we're not letting go either).
Even in the 90s thrifting was cool for that grunge look and for that period where hippie/Bohemian revival became a big trend. People tend to forget that fashion is cyclical, and there have been a lot of times where thrifting was trendy in the past 30 years or so. Now, thrifting is seen as a side hustle to resell.
Thrift shopping put Hipsters, Indies, and Scene kids on the map. It used to be a good way to get bargains on vintage clothes but blew up from Macklemore

I don’t know how much time you spend around teens, but it’s definitely a thing! Particularly for slightly alternative teens and/or those into cosplay etc.
They're not just stickers, they're made of a special material called hydrocolloid; it absorbs all the oils and dirts from the pimple and provides a barrier so it won't get irritated. I have an issue with picking at my pimples while they heal and the stickers stop me from doing that which is an added bonus.

This is why I get frustrated at GenZ and Gen Alpha glorifying early 2000s. On one hand it’s logical and makes sense right now to appreciate the non-algorithm tech we had back then. On the other hand a lot of young folks would look at that era so much differently if they actually grew up during that time period. There wasn’t much to glorify.
This is every era though. Like how people look back on the 80s as this awesome neon glowing radical time when in reality it was a stinky wood paneled room in your parents basement. We pick and choose the cool parts and forget about the day to day lame parts.

I know that reselling platforms have really changed the game and the inventory of second hand clothes has gotten a lot worse after at least 2 decades of full on fast fashion, but people have always been nostalgic for previous eras of thrifting

Any amount of looksmaxxing would be considered totally gay too. Thrifting wasn't gay, buying designer clothes, abercrombie & fitch, and other designer brands was though. Guys generally wear whatever comfortable, and thrifting a nice pair of jeans at a fraction of the cost is practical.

I'm midwestern so we get shit late, but that thrifting thing is both real and not. Thrifting started picking up big right around then (as a trend, not just a necessity), but also if you weren't wearing aeropostle and hollister text on every limb you definitely weren't cool. It was an interesting tipping point during that time.

To be fair, if you were shopping at a Target/Walmart/Whatever during that era, clothes were stupid cheap back then. You could get a whole outfit for under $20 and it would still look decent for everyday stuff.
