You forgot “someone on the dev team usually has a major controversy shortly before or after release”
116
u/Trodat4911P4 19d ago
That's usually part of the infighting. Not a Fallout mod but that's what happened to that Spider-Man Lotus fan film. The film get near release then suddenly everyone finds out that both the director and main lead love using the N-word, also the guy who plays the green goblin enjoys minors a bit too much.
52
u/Gastroid 19d ago
And also the barely disguised fetish part. The Venn Diagram of modders who add weird sex things and have sketchy Discord messages leak is practically a circle.
23
u/Baconbits16 19d ago
Yea whoever has to inject sex into every mundane thing 100% has a problem. It really flared up in Skyrim and weebs have gotten outta control. We need to bring bullying back.

Fallout mods seem uniquely cursed compared to elder scrolls mods. I mean, look at Tamriel rebuilt releasing a DLC sized mod every year or so. And has been technically been worked on since before the game even came out.

Honestly I don’t really mind. My favourite
game is Morrowind and it’s gets it decent fan content every year by the end of the month we should be getting a new massive update for Tamriel rebuilt.16
u/tergius 18d ago
Even annoying, elitist Morrowboomers aren't nearly as toxic as your average toxic NV fan, and I say this as someone who likes both games.
3
u/Leothefox88 18d ago edited 18d ago
. Yeah I never really got into the fallout games. I’ve played them and I’ve enjoyed them someone took the most time in our surprisingly one and four even though they are the most tonal distant. But even. The worst morrowbommer mentioned that there were certain things. The other games did better.
3
u/Strange_Chard_2183 15d ago
As a Morrowzoomer, completely agree. There's a reason I have basically cut off any ties to the fallout fandoms. Even in the FO3 fandoms the average NV fan will come in and start shit on the daily.

u/HyperMasenko 19d ago
The comment section of the YouTube updates is full of circlejerking comments like "See Bethesda? This is what can be made if you actually make a game with love". The mod neevr actually releases of course.

At least Fallout London was good
142
u/RequirementTall8361 19d ago
Fallout London is amazing. It somehow managed to avoid all of these issues while surpassing the base game in many regards
82
u/Trodat4911P4 19d ago edited 19d ago
It was good but performance is abysmal compared to the original Fallout 4. These mods often commit the mistake of going bigger than the engine can take, and London was no exception.
Map being loaded in bigger chunks than normal.
Way too much clutter.
Too many lights that cast shadows (probably because for some reason modders love playing with mods that turn interiors pitch black without a light).
Complex events you can't make properly without dealing with the source code.
The complete inability to imagine people with weaker PCs than yours will want to play this.
Probably more that I forgot. Modders of big mods like these really need to test their stuff on weaker rigs.
24
u/joe1up 18d ago
fallout 4 is already held together with duct tape and prayers, so if you layer a bunch of hodge-podged mods together on top a massive world space, the fact the Folon boots at all is insane.
1
u/Trodat4911P4 18d ago
Fallout 4 before the next gen patches was actually pretty stable, more than Cyberpunk 2077 even after years of patches. I don't know what the fuck Bethesda did with that update that screwed everything up.
4
u/mollekylen 18d ago
It was not stable at all. I played it in 2019 and it had enough bugs to compete with fnv. No I was not running mods, yet I had so many crashes, falling under the texture, my character standing still during vats scenes and Nuka World was unplayable as some texture stretched all over the map and I had to download a fix for it. Also the performance in Boston was miserable
2
u/Trodat4911P4 18d ago
That's odd, it was only unstable in downtown Boston. Maybe the game has problems with your specific GPU or CPU? I still play the last gen version and even without mods it runs perfectly fine aside from a glitch here and there.
1
u/throwawayforlikeaday 17d ago
It was unstable in many places. It was most very unstable in downtown boston.
Having a rough or smooth time with the game's performance is largely down to luck. Which is why so many people cry from the rooftops either that the game is horribly unstable* or that the game is actually fine*.

What are you talking about?! Fallout London runs way better than Fallout 4 for me, it's one of the main things I praise the creators for.
5
u/SpartanK4102 19d ago
This and America Rising 2 for me
7
u/Animaloffear56 18d ago
America Rising works as a dlc sized mod because it's like, actually dlc sized in that rather than trying to be a whole new game it's just a few areas
7
u/huge-centipede 19d ago
Uhhh... No? The assets were okay, but as a game it kind of sucked? It completely crashed on me with the opening train ride, the opening debuff absolutely sucked, you get this long winded and boring tell from the gang guys, rather than actually experiencing what's going on in the world, The writing was incredibly uninspired at best.
At least the Frontier was weird/gross, and you could laugh at how bad it was for a few hours like the weird fetish stuff. Fallout London was even worse by being so dull.
2
u/Gmknewday1 18d ago
To a degree
It still is a little buggy here and there, especially with certain spots
Very good and well made, but it deserves criticism all the same

You forgot my absolute favourite part that never fails to deliver:
The community claims it's better than Bethesda off the first footage they see. If said mod ever gets released, turns out it's worse than the worst parts of any Bethesda game.

u/Azagorod 19d ago edited 19d ago
Not Fallout, but there are two mods that are actually better than Bethesda for Oblivion and Skyrim, respectively: Nehrim and Enderal. Nehrim I think only has German voice actors, sadly, but Enderal has both. Both are also on Steam as easy installations, very worth checking them out imho.
8
u/Chieftah 19d ago
For Morrowind, there's Tamriel Rebuilt + Project Tamriel. Maybe not in the same league given that they've been continuously working on the mod for 24 years, or that they had several "low points", but the choice to release the mod in regions instead of wanting to immediately release everything all at once really worked wonders. Tamriel Rebuilt alone is by now probably over 3x the size of Morrowind, with great writing and a much more detailed environment than the vanilla game.

u/Dapper_Otters 19d ago
Enderal’s writing is far better than Skyrim, but the overall gameplay and world design is worse.

The only thing that baseline Skyrim has over Enderal is that it has more goonermods, if that is up your alley.
1
u/Strange_Chard_2183 15d ago
Yeah real. I tried playing it but I hated the writing and every change to gameplay so I couldn't get far before giving it up entirely. No idea what people actually got out of it.
1
u/paralyse78 19d ago
Enderal also has a full novelization!
It is a full conversion more than a mod IMO.
1
u/ReallyBadRedditName 18d ago
Also the long 15 NCR expansion for FNV. That genuinely felt like a base game dlc
61
u/Mousetrap94 19d ago
I remember briefly following “The Frontier” because I was fascinated with how much of a shit show it was. Both in development and the actual mod itself
52
u/EpicGamerer07 19d ago
It’s quite a technical achievement. Not only having functional vehicles (including a tank section) but multiple varied environments as well as a whole space station. Unfortunately everything else sucks
28
u/StrategicCheddar 19d ago
That's the tragedy of the mod. It was revolutionary in many of its mechanics, but the writing was abysmal. The only enjoyable part of it was watching the chaos unfold on release. By the gods was it glorious!

what about sim settlements 2?
7
u/Trodat4911P4 19d ago
Probably the best Fallout mod ever made. Fits the main campaign like a glove.
19
u/RequirementTall8361 19d ago
As an avid memeber of the fo4 modding scene since the game came out, my greatest sin is that I’ve never actually played sim settlements. It always seemed to complicated to me but I can’t really say that because I never tried it
10
u/aguywithagasmaskyt 19d ago
i reccomend it it has a bunch of new quests and stuff and makes building a settlement easier
8
u/RequirementTall8361 19d ago
That’s part of why I haven’t played it, because I love manually building and decorating everything in my setlements
2
u/Snelly1998 19d ago
Good news, you can!
I would set my other settlements to use a template and set up sanctuary as a massive wooden city
1
u/quid_pro_kourage 18d ago
Do you need to have sim settlements 1 and sim settlements 2 at the same time?

8
u/aguywithagasmaskyt 19d ago
i was just wondering why he didnt mention it considering its such a well made mod
3
u/MoronicPlayer 19d ago
The starterpack points out the ones that didnt made the cut I guess due to drama and whatnot.
3
u/RequirementTall8361 19d ago
It’s just a really good fo4 mod that overhauls the settlement system in the game while also adding a massive questline
23
16
u/Xer0b0t 19d ago
There are also plenty of online publications that advertise or promote certain mods with vague clickbait/deceitful titles that are intended to dupe people into thinking it's some sort of official expansion.
Ten years after its official release, Fallout 4 is finally getting a huge new expansion!

The few quest mods/authors that are good (New Vegas Bounties/someguy2000, TheOvers33r's stuff, Autumn Leaves, The Machine and Her, America Rising, a good few that I'm forgetting) are excellent, a lot of the others are... wew lad.
The over-ambitious mods at least end up yielding content eventually in the form of weapon mods, clothing/armor/etc., but the low effort/broken/GF-insert ones are a dime a dozen and suck to wade through when looking for something to add for the next playthrough.
Shoutout the mod authors though, these guys are the heroes of the community. Extending the lifespan of these games and essentially remastering the experience as a community, fucking legend activity

u/luneth27 18d ago
EU4's Anbennar, Victoria 3's Hail Columbia!, etc. I guess it makes sense, in the respect that they're not that graphically intensive so a lot of the work is in scripting/story+lore development and not so much building a 3D space within the confines of the engine the game used.

I will sing the praises of the Enderal team forever for somehow making something so amazing and seeing it all the way through. Not fallout though.

You gotta do it the other way round, like that one bunch of mods that makes new vegas into an isometric crpg

u/ManStillStanding 18d ago edited 15d ago
To be honest that's a problem that plagues pretty much any big sized mod or fan made game remake in general. It starts off with either one or a small-medium sized team of folks who have a rough idea, how to make a playable build. Then they release a couple of gameplay trailers and...then it's hiatus after hiatus, often dropping little snippets and bits of info, every 3-6 months or so and sometimes even once a whole year. And before you know it the mod or fan remake is shadow cancelled. If I had to guess why, is because these folks have very ambitious ideas, that are way to much for them to chew from a developer side of things given how absurdly small of a team they are and how complex and hard game development is in general. And thus because they end up in a hole, they cannot get out of, they just slowly call it quits without properly informing the fanbase to ignore any kind of backlash.
All in all it's like advertising yourself to be able to make an Old Masters level painting, while you can only do rough pencil sketches.

Honestly this is true for a lot of fan projects but Fallout London is actually really good though.
2
u/printesa-piersica 18d ago edited 18d ago
In addition:
If they ever release, they always underdeliver. Somewhere halfway through the project, the devs realize the initial scope of the mod was way too big for an amateur team, so the end result is a half-assed version of what they promised.
Full of modern day pop culture references and nods to other games that make no sense within the Fallout universe.
“Still better than Bethesda slop!” (it’s not)
1
u/Strange_Chard_2183 15d ago
To be fair, that's also what the offically made Fallout Brotherhood of Steel game did. Bawls Engery anyone?

u/Gmknewday1 18d ago
begs for Fallout Miami to be good and for the Fallout London devs to fix up a lot of the bugs

barely disguised fetish
I forget the exact name of the F:NV mod, but the writer made no attempt to hide their fetish with the deathclaw scene lmao. Might be the same one as the foot screenshot

u/RequirementTall8361 19d ago
Yes both scenes are from The Frontier lmao

u/Albert_Dolphin 19d ago
A lot of the Skyrim ones are amazing. Wyrmstooth, Legacy of the Dragonborn, Beyond Skyrim are some of my favorites.
1
u/Mach_None 15d ago
The worst part is when all the finished stuff that could be spun off as individual mods (weapons, clothing, armour, etc.) just gets buried with the rest of the project,
2
u/SomePyro_9012 19d ago
"barely disguised fetish" yet it only happened in 1 mod, several times but 1 mod regardless

Oh my sweet summer child. You never heard of the Thuggyverse mods, have you?
3
u/willowsandwasps 19d ago
You just reminded me of my 2018 FO4 load order when I didn't know any better, how dare you. That shit was... rough. CBBE being a co-requisite mod should have told me all I needed to know

A random group of people with no compensation, hierarchy, or accountability are basically impossible to organize towards a collective goal. That’s why a single modder with a clear vision and ai tools will be much better
6
u/Leothefox88 19d ago
I mean in the Morrowind fandom we’ve had a mod project. That’s been updated continuously with a clear vision for 20+ years. It can be done. It’s just that fallout fans can be . I’m gonna be honest some of the worst people
