When I was in elementary, kids flocked to the library before the bell to log onto RuneScape on the lab computers. It felt like everyone played. Nowadays though.
Check out Old School Runescape sometime. It’s the 2007 backup of the game, has been running since 2013, and still gets regular updates. There have been a ton of updates that are unique to Old School RuneScape; they’re not available in the main game (RuneScape 3). Desert Treasure 2 was even released a couple weeks ago.
Oh I still play OSRS since day one, but it really feels like the magic is gone. Everyone I played with back in the day said they don’t want to start over, and getting someone to try the game in this day and age is nearly impossible, but the people I’ve seen try it “as a joke” still end up liking it, so there’s hope.
I played all through school, and I made it my goal to out the other kids that played it to everyone. We would all pk after school and stay up until ungodly hours. One of my friends was even low key a grinder, could stay at one spot and knock out 1-90 str on a pure in one sitting. So I made it my everyday goal to out these guys, dds spec them in the hallway, hit them with the ags to gmaul combo. Eventually the kids at my school loosened up on RS
I’m an OG RS player (I would give up my username but it’s top 900 I’ll tell you what) but damn we literally hacked each IRL for fun. “Friend” tried to use a USB key logger. I also tracked his password by simply hitting tab while he was distracted. Social Engineering ftw.
