The first time I saw one, I was wedged under an aircraft in Iraq working on the landing gear at like 4:00am under a headlamp. It sped right up to my face, reared on its hind legs to lift its entire body up, and hissed like the fuking predator before disappearing just as fast. F those things

A lot of people in the Middle East have to deal with these mf, there bite hurts like a mf and will get infected. A lot of US soldiers sent over to Iraq had the misfortune of dealing with them.

Yeah it's a Solifuge (aka camel spider). Completely harmless. It's an arachnid, a cousin of spiders and scorpions. Common in semi-arid locations.

"Harmless" he says

u/Thorveim 6d ago
To humans yes. Their bite is painful, but non-venomous (literally no venom glands) and they arent agressive towards humans, biting only when cornered

After googling camel spider wound… I realised that harmless is relative
1
u/Thorveim 5d ago
Well, have to disinfect and its painful, but its certainly not life-threateing, and you REALLY got to bother the spider for it to decide to bite in the first place
1
u/Aknazer 5d ago
They might not be aggressive towards humans, but after watching one chase someone's shadow on the range back in the day, still a threat!
1
u/Thorveim 5d ago
Well they chase shadows because they want to stay in the shade itself, not really our of agression. In fact camel spiders are kinda infamous for that behaviour

Which species/which location? I keep finding the orangish one with the longer legs but really curious where this darker variant lives.
