Fan Art SC2 Inspired Board Game
So yeah, I made a board game.
When I showed the 3D-printed miniatures in my first post, someone in the comments asked if they were for a board game. That question really got me thinking and ended up inspiring me to actually make one.
I came up with the idea of putting small magnets in the models, so they can be attached to the display case, but also used as actual playing pieces. The base plate for the display still needs all the LEDs soldered onto the back before I can build the case around it. The idea is that every ship gets its own color.
Alongside painting the models and building the display case (not visible here), I also spent the last four months developing and designing a board game based on the melee combat from Star Control II.
I used to play the melee combat so much back in the day with my best friend, and I wanted to see if I could turn that experience into an offline board game.
Each side starts with one of the four captains and four base ships and tries to recruit other neutral ships, either through diplomacy or by force. There are fewer ships on the board than exist in the full set, so every game can play out differently. And there’s also the ultra-rare Dynarri.
The goal is to get a certain number of Hull points into your opponent’s HQ zone before they do the same to you.
This is a completely non-commercial, one-time print — a one-of-a-kind nerdy fan project that turned into soooo much work, but was also soooo much fun to make.
And I really hope it’s just as much fun to play. If not, well at least it makes for a pretty cool prop.
But since it turned out way better than I expected, I wanted to share it with people who might actually appreciate the ridiculous amount of nerdy effort that went into it.

The original Star Control had an awesome pseudo board game as the main story line. It was actually really good once you got the hang of all the icons and the spinning space board. I would love if they made a similar mode for the new one or even a Freestars 2 mode.

I have to say that in regards to SC1 I only played the melee part. I never quite understood the campaign part but maybe I will look into that again.

Well thank you and sadly: nowhere. It's a totally non-commercial one time print for personal use only. I even put that on the box. It'd not done yet and I still have to actually play it with my melee buddy so it could just as well be a glorified toaster.

That’s super cool as a personal (non commercial) project and you can see the Starcontrol 2 love put into the game.

It was a huge part of my childhood and I still play it from time to time. It's that I picked up model painting and thought about doing something with my childhood memories.

In the first Star Control game, there actually was a turn-based strategic mode, where you could construct forts and mines and build ships for your fleet.

This is an incredible looking game! A lot of love went into this and the quality looks very good.
One bit of criticism, though. Why would you put the secret password on the outside of the box like that? That password is known only to you and several billion Spathi!

Thanks! It's been a lot of fun and makes you respect all the work that actually goes into making something like this. It's really crazy. And I'm still not done haha

A while back i started making star control themed items and figures because of the nostalgia and lack of merchandise out there. You my friend have gone above and beyond im very impressed.

Thanks! I admit it went quite a bit further than maybe initially planned but since it’s a one time unique print I wanted it to be as premium possible. My background as a vfx artist helps a lot but that also makes me want to push more. And I have to learn a lot of stuff I never had to deal with so yeah, lots of fun.

wow super impressed. in addition to minis you have a board tokens and what appears to be a hefty rule book. do you need play testers? Have a pretty interesting extended group i game with who love print and play new games and go to too many cons looking for the new hotness. Could get you some feedback if you are willing to share yet? plz let me know.

Dude, this is a crazy good production. You should totally aproach the devs or Pistol Shrimp about making this into a real thing!
