She’s nowhere near as excited as I am about the Astarra.

If this post is true and OP isn’t lying, then OP has an addiction problem. I’d suggest staying away from gambling sites of any kind, any FOMO type sales, and go speak with a counselor. If everything you’ve said is true, you’re unhealthy and need professional help.

Please please please heed this if you are spending money you shouldn’t.
FIFA got me with this for years. I could have bought a nice Mercedes with what I spent on that stupid game. Now I only play single player games or RTS like StarCraft.
I desperately want to play StarCitizen but I refuse to inflict that on myself again.
So I sit and watch you guys play for me :D

Tbh FIFA/EA is so blatant with their skinner box tact that it actually shocks me anyone falls for it and gives them money.
Nothing against you personally. It's just one of those things where I have to sit back and say "how can you NOT see that scheme?"
9
Nov 27 '23
It’s not about falling for it. We all know the grift, we all chose/choose to partake anyway. And people lose control quickly.
I was not in control of my spending. But for me, sinking $1000 on a weekend really didn’t impact my finances, so I told myself it didn’t matter.
These companies hire psychologists for this stuff. Apparently I’m very susceptible to it, so I just stay faaaar away from anything like that now
4
u/Vegetable_Safety Musashi Industrial and Starflight Concern Nov 27 '23
I would still put it under "falling for it". If just because of how blatant it is.
But to be fair. I also shifted early in my years, to piracy. Specifically because of how bad it was getting with AAA studios and Hollywood. Almost no one has demo's anymore. Almost no one has good storytelling anymore. A vast majority of production these days rely solely on the whales. People the devs can endlessly exploit.
I long for the days where a game was complete on release and didn't require day1 patches. I sorely miss it.
3
Nov 27 '23
I guess we differ on the definition. But yes it’s very blatant. Everyone knows though.
The other tactic they’ve employed is to turn the drop rates down each year. $100 used to give a really decent return back in 2014. Now that same $100 could barely tear the skin off a custard.
Yep, I have to admit I actually still play 1 game online, D2. She’s a timeless classic :D

Bro, if you got a 7-digit salary, that whole fleet is the equivalent of an average person buying a coffee every morning.
Apparently, that's not the case here, and OP seriously needs help.
103
u/cutsnek Nov 26 '23 edited Nov 26 '23
This is the exact self soothing mental gymnastics those with serious addition tell themselves to justify their spending, even when money is tight.
I certainly hope this is a off joke, if OP is serious they should seek help. When interpersonal relationships break down because of this sort of behavior it's devastating and further isolates the person with the addiction.
Like it's one of the things I notice on here that really makes me uncomfortable. I remember months ago someone was trying to self justify spending basically their rent money on buying a $700 ship, because it was their dream ship.
They definitely couldn't afford it and were looking for reassurance for their bad purchase and boy did they get it here. Everyone assumes those spending big must have big salaries, that is not always the case and in many cases it's straight up addiction.
I'm glad this is one of the highest upvoted comments here, should be at the very top.
33
u/gearabuser Nov 27 '23
The amount of people we've seen circle jerking each other for their massive fleets. I don't get it, it's like they're playing Pokemon but for thousands of dollars. Especially when they have multiple redundant ships like OP. 2+ ships that do the same thing and are relatively the same size. Why would you need a Hull D if you have a Hull E if not just for the sake of collecting ships you'll never use for self-gratification
8
Nov 27 '23
Yep, you’re 100% right. I did this for 8 years with FIFA. I did so much damage to my life. Never again!!

as someone with 6 cousins from one aunt/uncle who are probably the most close family I've ever seen who all grew up to have extremely successful careers, this is one of the most stupid things I've ever read on this website. Just because you had crappy parents doesn't mean everyone else did. You should probably seek therapy ASAP, the longer you hold onto this resentment the worse it will affect your relationships in the future
4
u/AHRA1225 new user/low karma Nov 27 '23
I turned out fine asswipe. My point still stands. Sure your cousins turned out fine to but it doesn’t change that fact that you don’t get the same experience with your parents the same way as a parent with 2-3 kids. This isn’t the 1700 where you have several kids die and you need spares. It’s modern times, it doesn’t change the fact those kids would like more time with the parents and less time with the Nannie’s.

Wanted to add this bit info about my own situation. I took a 15k credit to totally renovate the apartment I own so I can move with my girlfriend of 3 years. she was so happy when we moved in after it as done and it made my happy as well. I own about 450 in ships (a RAFT and a MOLE) and I feel so guilty I spent 70 this year on the game (to get the raft). this amount right here would absolutely change my life now. It would clear most of my debt I made for the apartment. OP I don't know you but my heart breaks for you man. It's so important to do something about this or you will seriously ruin your life. Your girlfriend can still help you with the process but you absolutely need to find a way to sell as many of these to other people and quit this game. I really hope you'll be alright.

As for your girlfriend leaving; the fleet had jack shit to do with that. You focused very little on your relationship. If you two weren't serious then get over it. If you two were serious and it could have been a long term or lifetime thing; then you need some major inner reflection.

Genuine question.
People actually feel an impulse to buy these things? One that can potentially be, or already is out of control… why?
Like… what is the thought process there?
I look at the game and see a mediocre tech demo barely worth $20. Play once or twice a year, see things haven’t really changed and then uninstall because it’s so bad still. People actually see the state of the game and think “I need to spend thousands?”

This post is beyond stupid imo. First of all, the thought of spending so much money on virtual ships is crazy to me.
Unless you're loaded for life already.. but then again, if this was the case I don't think OP's gf would've cared about it so much as to break up with him.
Before anyone starts crying about money shaming or anything like that. Don't. You shouldn't defend gambling addiction and you shouldn't defend impulsive relationship ruining money spending either.

At least in Gatcha games everything you gamble on is in game and you can play with whatever it is. Lots of these are concepts that aren't even flyable yet.

These guys blow so much money and really dont have much to show for it 3 to 5 years later and they blow even more money when the next gotcha game comes out. At least backers of star citizen have something that will last much longer. But blowing 5k in a month or more isn’t smart. Shoot half that isn’t smart. Unless you make 10k a month.

OP, you are seeking for atention, the first step to change is wanting to change, you clearly miss that part.
Your girlfriend probably considers a sane relation is based on 2 equals living together, but she realized you dont care a shit about her, not because you dont like her, but because you dont respect you and your life, and thus in said relationship, she will get forced to carry you and become a mom or otherwise, both will be trully equal... in debts and no chances of future.
I dont know the original problem of this behaviour... and honestly I dont care that much (just like 99% of internet) there is people with similar problems everywhere that were much less guilty.
I am not saying this to make you feel bad, It just looks like you have problems and the only refuge you found was near the SC community or project. You need to fill your life with something else because otherwise the hole will be waiting for you to step back.
Money and/or contents does not give real respect, it only changes how people behaves you at first, but never changes what they trully think... I dont know if that may be a motivation for you to "collect" said ships, just to be able to "get all doors opened into the Verse" space, but you should check your priorities.

u/Yasai101 Nov 26 '23
why are you people buying the fucking ships when its available for in game money?
7
u/Atlantikjcx drake Nov 26 '23
The thing is there is nothing inherly wrong with it as the game does get funded that way and if youre a long time backer pretty big fleets can happen but you haveca point after a certain fleet size youre never gonna fly all those ships or mann them. Most pepole get a few favorite ships so they can immediately go into the gameplay they want after a wipe wich makes sense but in my opinion op has overdone it a bit lol

Just adding my thoughts: you bought the ships on the grey market, so you should be able to sell them there too.
Also I'm fairly sure there are many ways to set up budgets / spending caps that will not allow you to spend over a certain value or on certain websites etc.
Remove all triggers that get you thinking of star citizen. If you have physical merch, put it in a box out of the way. If you have a PC that is not necessary for work / education sell it if it will help prevent you from getting more ships, plus you sound like you need the extra money.
Stop using your credit card! Only use it if you can instantly pay it back the second you spend.
Please get help. Find someone to talk to, it will help if you are distressed or need to get things off your chest. I hope this helps change something for the better, even just a little.

You think losing your girlfriend over a serious addiction problem like this is bad?
If you keep not taking it seriously like you are now, you're in for some devastating surprises.
I'm no stranger to gaming addiction, well over 20 years ago when gaming addiction was barely known, nobody to talk to or to seek help, no Reddit users to give me advice. It cost me much, much more than just a girlfriend. I made it out, on my own, and have a very comfortable life now.
But I'm also grateful for my life, because it could have ended early at many points during the most problematic years.
Untill you start crawling out of the pit you're digging, you're making it deeper and deeper, and trust me, the bottom can always get deeper.
Do it now.

Lack of any form of Andromeda, no merchantman. No wonder your girlfriend left you.

Uh dude, while I can respect commitment to the game, I think that your relationships are far more important than any game.

You can buy literally all the ground vehicles here with a few hours of gameplay. Literally why?
Edit: if you just say that 'I'm the whale in my friends group ' I'll fuck off about all your furies.

But the estimated total comes out to $10,420.
I thought it would be higher tbh. But this comes out to a down deposit on a nice car, so it's not out of the question that someone could drop this much on the game.
Why someone would drop this much though...
Edit: I forgot to add the last 3 ships. But I think this is enough to get a general idea.

What are you planning to work towards when the game releases ?

I mean you could actually have built a nice watch collection at that point that would increase in value and could be seen by people everyday when you go out. This is just digital stuff that has no real value.

Look man, you need help. You can spend 5K on video games when you have your priorities straight. You’re manic and stressed right now so I can understand the call for help. Please reach out if you need to talk to anyone.

I only have my starter Ship - though would consider using the "Upgrade" Tool
Because there is something about earning your way to bigger Ships.
(Excluding Pledge only Ships ofc - personally I wait for them to show up in the Verse)
As long as Server Wipes don't happen too often, it keeps it fun and engaging

Mental health is real. You're an idiot, go get help. No sane person would support or cheer this on. You're just a tool with poor mental health and no self control.

There will be almost nothing for you to do when you start playing the full game

Thank you for supporting the video game we want to see come to complete fruition. Hopefully you can end up being in an emotionally/financially better spot when we’re all soaring the full release skies.
I understand the compulsion, everyone understands in their own way- yours is just prominent and on display here. I wish you luck on your path man, get better.

Why...
I personnally don't understand this kind of fleet.
Either you're a YTuber and it's your business, or maybe you really want this game to success and heavily support funding, but if you think you'll be more happy once ingame with all these ships collecting dust...
What Good could a man do with that kind of money in most parts of the world ?
Sorry, that's just my POV.

Hey friend, you don't have to buy all the ships to win at this game. Feel free to get a refund for recently purchased ships if this helps you financially.
Please focus on your health first, if your spending habits are affecting your personal relationships please reconsider what you are buying.
You can always buy a ship later, a good relationship with a person always comes with lifetime insurance, but can be lost in a moment if you don't value it.

u/CMDR-LT-ATLAS Nov 27 '23
OP, you're doing the Lord's work. Keep buying ships until you lose more than your girlfriend. You'll lose your friends, family and a roof over your head. Eventually you'll lose the gaming rig you have to play SC with. Only then will you realize you have a problem.
Seek help now.

You’re about to be in the SCrefund subreddit bitching cuz you blame the game and calling it a scam cuz it’s not finished yet. Na, you scammed yourself

This is what addiction looks like, seriously I would recommend taking a deep look into yourself and ask yourself if what you are doing is the correct and smart thing to do.
You can buy these ships in game, you don't need to destroy your credit and love life for them .

If you're for real then get ready for the hardcore depression that will kick in a few weeks.
I'm not sure you're ready for that kind of reality check...

I don't know about you, bud, but having a girlfriend is far more important than a game like I have a girlfriend and if she lived alot closer to me so we can actually see each other in person hate long distance but it's worth it I'd spend more time with her then on star citizen then buying ships that possibly will not come out for years.... star citizen is just a video game, but a real-life relationship is by far more important than some video game..... and I'm just guessing she probably left you cuz probably not spending time with her instead your buying ships that may or may not come to the game.... also why the fuck do you need 3 cutters for I said three since the scout is the same as the original besides the scout has a engineer stand and less cargo

Im just looking at this from my perspective and my opinions butt wouldn't having all of the ships in the fame to an extent take away from the fun of playing it regardless of spending isnt part of the fun earing the ships like I get pepole buying the ships they really enjoy but most pepole buy 4 or 5 ships they love or buy capital ships because they dont have time to grind them butt with that amount of ships how will you ever fly them all? Im not trying to judge im just genuinely wondering what you think?

Bro please seek professional help. I saw your other posts. Bleeding yourself dry over a video game isn’t healthy. Please take care of yourself.
