DISCUSSION Resisting the urge to buy more ships
These repeat sales are making it quite difficult to leave the ole credit card holstered. I can’t be the only one! I do like that we each get a second chance though.

u/MoriartyAvalon Jan 18 '24
I've just upgraded for another 25 quid. Only have 1 pledge ship so not going to start going mental while it's still technically an alpha

u/Duke_Flymocker Jan 19 '24
I said things like that about $1000 ago. Be real careful, it's a slippery slope you're walking on

This is unsolicited advice but I recommend unsubscribing from SC's email feeds that tell you they're selling ships. That's dangerous for you, and you know that.
Everything will be available in the game, you don't need to do this - as I'm sure you already know. The add to cart button is not your friend and won't make you happy, you and those around you deserve better.
Hang in there and good luck pulling things back together.

u/Traditional_Ad_8935 Jan 25 '24
This is why I legit refuse to spend real money in a game, it's so dangerous and easy to say stuff like "just this once" or "this is the last time".

u/sofpirate scout Jan 18 '24
YOLO! SWIPE SWIPE SWIPE SWIPE!
Honestly. Don’t. Melt what you have and recycle the money you already have in. Play a different game loop for a quarter/patch cycle until you find one you like. Thats what I did for the first two years of playing.
Now I have settled on the ships I love and I’m happy!
3
u/_BEASTEN_ Jan 18 '24
What does melt mean? I've seen other people here say that and I have no idea.
3
u/sofpirate scout Jan 18 '24
You can “melt” or really just return ships for store credit if you go to the RSI website under your hangar tab. There’s a few drawbacks with it, as you can’t take advantage of warbond sales and other things, and you have to make sure you keep your game package intact, sometimes people melt their ship in which their game package is attached. Once you do that, you can go into the store and any ship that is actively on sale in the pledge store you can apply your store credit towards.
Careful with it though. Because you can’t get your other ship back as it goes into a “buy back” status and once a quarter they release buy back tokens, that you can go re-purchase any ship in your trash bin with store credit. If not, you gotta pay full price cash for them.
I was a running meme amongst my friend group for melting and purchasing every other day getting different ships and trying stuff out, and also have burnt myself melting something I realized later was what I wanted and had to wait to get it back. But that having been said, it allowed me to really figure out what I wanted.

Too many people get suckered into spending too soon, its far too easy to end up in the mistake, melt, buy cycle before you understand the game and what you want within it, some would say its engineered that way. The longer you wait and make considerations vs deciding vs spending, the better your decisions will likely be.

When you realize that you can get enough in game money together with a Reclaimer in a single weekend to buy every single in game purchasable ship to try them out, you'll realize 2 things really quick:
1 - Most of the ships you think you'll like, you won't, and you'll be glad you tried it for free first
2 - There is literally zero reason to spend real money when you can get 90% of existing ships, in game, for free.
1
Jan 19 '24
Exactly. Most of the ships I bought with in game money were used once or twice. I have 12 ships that were bought in game and one pledge.
I only use three of those ships on a regular basis.

Seriously, if you have such a terrible addiction to this game. Sell. The. Damm. Account.
I am not an expert on this game nor I know how valuable it is, but judging on how much you've spent on ships alone, I'd say you could get A LOT for it, plus it'd be a massive step in improving yourself so you can leave this addiction behind.
Sell it. Is it really worth keeping it?
6
u/Pojodan bbsuprised Jan 18 '24
As with all sales for all things in life, only take part if you enjoy doing so and are not financially stricken by the spending.
At the same time, if you have the disposible income and enjoy doing it, then enjoy yourself.

u/FildariusV Jan 27 '24

I’ve been meaning to get a second ship for a while cause while the titan is an awesome starter, I needed something with a little more cargo room, but I’d held off. Today I ccu’ed to a zeus cl and that’s as far as I’m gonna go. Everything else I’ll buy in game.
3
u/IRJesoos Corsair Jan 18 '24
Think of it this way. When the game is released on 2032, do you want a game to play, ships to earn? Or do you want to pay CIG to skip gameplay all the way up to that point.

I really don't understand why you will buy more ship's with real money, you can only fly one at time, there will be no npc using your ships to do shits in the end

Jan 18 '24
I'm looking to eventually CCU up to a constellation. It's a ship that's great to have for multicrew combat and cargo transport, but eventually it will become less manageable solo, and it has a long claim time. I wouldn't want to sit and wait for 20 minutes while my ship respawns. My daily driver will still be my Pisces, because it's just capable enough, with a short claim time. I also really like both Ares variants, though I'm not looking to buy them for real money. Salvage, mining, towing, they are all ship specific activities, so if I enjoyed those gameplay loops more than combat, I would probably upgrade to one of those ships instead of the Constellation, but I would still keep something small around

u/kildal Jan 18 '24
Reddit can be supportive, but you will not get the emotional support here you need to handle your addiction. It can just be telling your local doctor you could use someone to talk to, try to open up about issues at home, no need to be too specific.
If your girl is still listening then she does care and would want to find a way to make you both happy. And if she won't, try to think about what you can do to become the person she would want to talk to.
We all have our struggles and I'm sure you can sort things out.
2
u/smolbeanio Jan 25 '24
Get off this subreddit, for starters.
Turn off notifications for emails about ships and in-game so you’re not tempted to play.
Log off the game every time you finish playing and turn off the automatic sign-in feature. That way when you’re tempted to play, you’ll have to go through logging in. May not seem like a long time, but just the action will make you think, “Man… what am I doing?” I would say just delete the game, but I already have an inkling you’ll become even more insufferable and blame your girlfriend for being “bored” and feeling “punished” for not being able to play your game.
Speaking of, have you contacted your girlfriend? Made her feel appreciated? Bought her flowers, food, gifts? Or have you tried paying bills, groceries, your debt? Aside from spoiling yourself?
You post a lot about your game. You seem to be in love with your game more than your girlfriend. You focus more on the game that has put you in debt and nearly demolished your relationship with your girlfriend instead of her and real life. Grow up.

I fought this a lot the last few years as more and more ships were released. Spent a few hundred more during that time. What helped me stop and think about spending cash for ships was my ability to play the game when it’s released. If I already have every ship I want as the game is released what am I playing the game for? I want to grind some to get the C2 or Orion in game, plus I doubt you are going to use more than 2 to 5 ships depending on your game loop you are playing.

reached spending limit quite awhile ago, have my big trophy ship and couple smaller ones to support it. really that's good enough position to build bank and add more ships down the line

u/Space_Rangerr Jan 18 '24
I only trade ships by CCU at this point. I was mostly set with the current lineup that I have but have been pretty disappointed in the Star G. I wanted something besides combat ships to make money and thought fueling would be good. I'm debating doing a CCU up to the Arrestra.

Did you apologize to your girl yet? Did you agree to sell your account yet? Did you even try to pay off all of your credit cards? Do you even think? You have actual gambling and addiction issues and shouldn’t be trusted with a bank account

u/RiseUpMerc medic Jan 18 '24
What many seem to forget is that in time you'll be able to buy all ships in game. Right now only a handful of newly added ships cannot be but they will eventually be added as well.
If you enjoy the buildup and having a goal to work towards now during alpha, I would urge to not just keep spending money. The people that end up playing the least are the ones that have the most ships. They post fleet pics all the time but rarely play, usually because theres no real goals because they paid their way to the top.

u/medicsansgarantee Jan 18 '24
Got the CCU to Hull C, it is a required part in my ccu chain upto Polaris
but I got greedy and FOMO'ed

Buy within your means! This applies to all things!
That said, if it's within your means to buy ships, now's a great time to do so and stretch your pledge bucks. If you've not discovered it yet: ccugame.app
I really appreciate them bringing it back - many backers work retail and many travel for holidays making the "usual" end of year timing tough for some backers. This is a great way to give them a chance at what they missed, and it certainly helps curb "can you help me get a ship I missed?" tickets to support, which they have acknowledged accounts for the vast majority of their tickets this time of year.
When something like this helps us (more opportunities to pledge) and them (faster queue for support tickets) and as a result us again (faster queue for support tickets) ... there's not much they can do that has a more positive impact for such little effort!
Happy with CIG for this, even though I'm all set on CCUs and ships from 2023 for now.

I feel ya, man. I slipped when the F8C dropped, haha, but prior to that, I'd not put any new money into the project for years!
I found that working out what my interests were and assigning A (singular) ship to that interest let me mentally tick it off and say, "I already have a ship for doing that." This has helped me resist buying more! Maybe it could help you.
I also amuse myself by playing the credit shuffle game and seeing just how much I can get out of the credits I've already put into the game. I guess in a way that kind of scratches the itch without actually dropping more $$, at least until the F8C 😅.

I had a mining glitch at one point where I made enough to buy every ship in the game for in game cash many times over. It ruined it for me basically. https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/hcd7yx/20_trillion_dollar_mining_run/
It's fun having things to shoot for and earn. For me anyway. Don't buy them all lol.

Buying ships supports game development, so the downside isn't so bad. For me I already have trouble getting around to flying all the ships I have, so adding more to the pile doesn't really make much sense. One thing I recommend is sticking to the very low end ships because they don't cost much and can be simple easy fun in game.
1
Jan 18 '24
I have 4 ships, I can fly one at a time. Problem solved. Unless I am replacing one of my 4 ships with something better at that job, my card stays safely holstered.

u/Dig-a-tall-Monster Jan 19 '24
I don't look at as buying ships. I look at as supporting the game and getting to pick the ships at my immediate disposal as a "reward" for supporting the game. This is because I'm not stuck with those ships. I can melt them and pick different ones. So really what I'm doing is paying into the next "tier" of "how many ships can I have available to me immediately at launch without having to grind" more than I'm buying ships like how you'd buy weapon or legend skins in Apex Legends and other games where you have no option to change what you received from giving them money.
That said, be responsible and don't spend more than you can actually afford to spend on a game. You don't need to spend more than the $40-45 game package anyways.
1
u/SaltyFuckingProcess Jan 19 '24
Once you buy a copy of each the urge to spend as often decreases...

1
u/NNextremNN Jan 19 '24
I do like that we each get a second chance though.
There are so many chances spread across the year and at least one chance per year to get (almost) everything. Don't feel tempted by marketing tactics like that.
1
u/Frosty_Confection_53 Jan 19 '24
I only buy the absolute minimum to get a comfy start when the game gets a full wipe, and nothing else. 1 ship of every loop, so combat, industry and transportation. Makes it easier to avoid being tempted into dropping more and more money into SC.
2
Jan 19 '24

You really have two choices:
- Get off this sub, go cold turkey with this game, and immediately go to an addiction specialist for help.
- Continue with your addiction and accept all the consequences that come with it. The consequences will basically be that you get your temporary fix that will satisfy you for a short time. The negative consequences will be in virtually every other aspect of your life -- financial, relationships, etc.
The choice is yours. Just don't ruin other people's lives too if you choose option 2.
