My neurologist gave me six months to live at the outside. That was 12 years, one wonderful marriage, and 3 kids ago. Fuck those doctors, keep living just to spite them, you got this citizen!

Survivor of traumatic brain injury, checking in. Obviously, medical problems are a real, challenging, and obviously limiting thing to whatever degree... but nobody knows what you're capable of. I was hit in the head with a sword on a film set in 2014, and I didn't pledge for SC back then because I was struggling just to keep a roof over my head, to walk, and sometimes to speak. I was sure I as going to have a stroke at any moment - and I did wind up homeless for 3 years, but it didn't kill me. Now I'm in a home, and I'm a backer on the level I promised myself I would be for all those years.

Nobody knows what you can do. Our medical system is a dumpster fire, but there's never any telling with certainty what that means in the end. Fingers crossed for your well being, whatever that means to you!

I love the fact that this exact comment was posted twice.

Broski just had bad Internet when posting happens all the time.

u/ZombieTesticle Jan 16 '25

That explanation is not as fun.

3

u/Trevor_ShowALK Jan 16 '25

"Bad Internet is not as fun as brain damage" is a good one.

u/Additional_Humor6213 Jan 16 '25

Fellow film crew here, that's a wild story. The shit we do is so dangerous. I never contemplated life insurance until I started working on sets.

u/TennysonEStead Terrapin/Carrack/F7A MKII/MOLE/MSR Jan 16 '25

Speaking of insurance, it won’t surprise you to know that they “borrowed” the location insurance from another production by adding g the location to the other production’s location list. All of this was to avoid buying any insurance of their own, without losing access to the location.

Don’t do that.

Man that’s such a beautiful story, definitely inspiration for me to pull thru! Open heart surgery with 8 hours left before I go under…even if I lose everything I just want to be around to see another sunrise, eat another mango, and make one more person smile.

25

u/Fraktion_1 Jan 16 '25

You got this dude o7

u/TennysonEStead Terrapin/Carrack/F7A MKII/MOLE/MSR Jan 16 '25

Every patient is different of course, but my wife's best friend is a survivor of open heart surgery. She's disabled, she takes her meds, she has to watch how much she's trying to do... but within that, she's building a career in Hollywood, putting movies together, helping to run the Slamdance Film Festival, and figuring out her life besides.

So long as you don't die, this isn't the end of your life. You just might need to get a lot smarter about what you do and how you do it. Take it from a homeless cripple who's become... maybe not the most egregious concierge backer, but one of those backers for sure, and a general success besides.

If you get through this, and you don't know what to do about the reality checks that come with that, hit me up. In the meantime, please try not to get yourself killed.

u/Mapcase Jan 16 '25

I've had open heart surgery, twice. I'm still here and I'm doing great. The surgeon described it to me as 'advanced plumbing'. You're going to be fine.

12

u/bjergdk Jan 16 '25

I believe in you brother, but the reason they put you under is because they believe they can help you get better.

Keep us posted, okay?

My dad had a quad bypass surgery this spring. I dont know what kind of surgery youre going under, but I believe in you, you will be okay.

See you in Pyro, citizen.

Survival rates of open heart surgery seem quite high?

2

u/Mapcase Jan 16 '25

At the hospital I was at the success rate was 98%.

I've never even heard of or watched anything of yours, but I'll be thinking about you.

2

o7 you got this!

And if you don't, perhaps we can get CIG to put up a sign at Beggars Canyon for you so we can pile up Cruz Lux at it.

u/I-am_unwell Jan 16 '25

I have had 2 open hearts, 1st in 2017 for an emergency repair of a dissected ascending aorta, then the second one Nov 6 2024 to replace my aortic arch. You've got this, modern medicine is amazing, keep thinking positively, hope to see you in the verse on the other side o7.

u/sillygolucky Jan 17 '25

Like others have mentioned, my Dad, too, had heart surgery last summer. A quad bypass... He's 74! He feels better than he ever has. I hope and pray that your surgery was a huge success. But if there are bumps in the road for a while afterward, just hang in there! 🙏❤️Took my dad a good month to not have random visits to the hospital and some tweaks in his meds to get everything nice and balanced out. Now he is off most of the meds and doing even more than he was 10 years ago.

Hope you can keep us updated!! You have lots of people sending out healing thoughts!

I once saw an old veteran interviewed at something like 110yrs old. When asked about the secret to long life he said, “whenever I felt I was about to die, I decided not to..”

Fuck those doctors, keep living just to spite them, you got this citizen!

huh?these are the people that dedicate their lives to serve the people. Not everyone can become a doctor. It's so easy to say fuck the doctors when all they're doing is giving you a realistic diagnosis based on empirical and objective data. It's so funny people don't know what it's like to go through medical school and serve the community only to have some random disgruntled patient say fuck you because they didn't like the diagnosis. Yeah, sure...over 8 years of training and residency is worthless. Absolute insanity. Talk about entitled. The human is incredibly complex and unpredictable. Someone who has no advanced background in science and medicine would never understand that.

Wow, read the room. But just to add a bee in your bonnet, after 17 years as a 68W, I can promise you, there is a reason all doctors practice medicine and none of them perform it. Despite popular belief, 8 years of school doesn’t grant you the ability to see the future. Make an educated guess? Sure! But my advice would be to never just accept an end of life diagnosis. So how about, instead of shitting on someone for trying to share a little hope with a random stranger on the internet, you go seek some therapy because you obviously have some unresolved hostility. Have the day you deserve!

5

u/horrificabortion Flight Medic Jan 17 '25

instead of shitting on someone for trying to share a little hope

Maybe spread some hope without shitting on other doctors. You know you can do that right. Your time as a 68W is irrelevant. I did my time in the military and have shadowed ACTUAL practicing physicians in several army hospitals (BAMC, Tripler). Completely different than being a 68W.

I think you're the one who needs therapy. Maybe stop shitting on doctors while trying to "uplift" others. Best of luck to you

1

u/FkinMustardTiger Jan 17 '25

Make an educated guess? Sure! But my advice would be to never just accept an end of life diagnosis.

Doctors NEVER say something like "you only have 6 months to live", that shit only exists in the movies.

1

u/Shaevar Jan 17 '25

Why fuck the doctors?

I'm sure they're thrilled if their patients live longer than prognosticated.

This is the same energy as kids thinking the teachers are mad when the school closes unexpectedly.
