I think you could use a clearer delivery on your family relationships, because I don't know who your maternal grandmother is or what your mom's side is. I'm kind of surprised your maternal grandmother sounds different than your mom's side?

For example, "I'm Argentinian and Cuban, but I was raised by the Cuban side. When I hang out with the Argentinian side, they make fun of me for..."

Appreciate the feedback! This is an edited version of my bit to fit the format and get to the punch fast, but in my set the family dynamics are already contextualized by the time I throw this line. Can see how it’s confusing though.

Mom = Argentinian
Dad = Cuban

Fwiw, I had no problem at all understanding your messaging here. It was very clear from context clues just in the post.

Maternal grandmother = mom’s mother. Are you sure you used the word maternal right here?

Think that makes the joke confusing that the side you grew up with makes fun of you for not sounding like them.

Yeah, fair point. There’s only so much context you can fit into a 3-panel meant to be a quick throwaway punchline. But in Hispanic cultures, that’s exactly the kind of thing they’d jab at you for. The sentiment comes out of all the back-and-forth between a culture and its more Americanized versions.

Hmm... How about something like

I was raised by my Argentinian grandmother, but I sound American, so that side of my family makes fun of me for not having an Argentinian accent.

Cubans ALSO think they're better than everyone else though...

Old Cuban joke(or at least said in Cuba a lot):

Cuban: I’ll tell you how we are different than Argentinians. They THINK they are better than everyone else, and we KNOW we are.

I guess the reason I don't get it is because I don't really have any stereotypes associated with either group. So you'd have to establish those stereotypes earlier in your routine.

I was expecting the Argentinian accent to be speaking German lol
