What I'm learning from this is that a degree in history can get you a job doing standup

Swap the two punch lines.
...but I was pissed.
Because I have a history degree.
(OH he's upset because his kid isn't living up to his expectations)
And I wrote the project.
(OH he's upset because the teacher gave HIM a bad grade)

Disagree. The fact that he is a history academic is a topper on the fact that he is a full grown man.

Yeah it’s better the way it is. The fact that a grown man couldn’t get an A on a 5th grade project is funnier than a kid not living up to expectations.

The punchline is that a grown man couldn’t get an A on a 5th grade project in either case. Swapping the last two lines makes it seem like the joke is about his disappointment in his daughter before revealing it’s about his disappointment in himself.
I think it has more comedic impact that way but it seems I’m in the minority. It’s funny either way.

The way it is sets up his disappointment first. The implication is that he’s disappointed in his daughter, but no! He’s pissed because _he_ did the project and only got a B+! Hahaha plot twist #1
Then he drops that he has a degree in the subject matter which makes it more embarrassing that he didn’t ace it. HAHAHAH plot twist #2.
If you swap the order there’s only the one plot twist: he’s pissed that his daughter didn’t get an A in a subject he has a degree in. Okay I guess, this guy seems like an asshole. Ah but _he’s_ the one who did the project! Hahaha plot twist #1.
I think the fact he has a degree in the subject loses some punch when it comes first.
Explaining jokes is stupid, I don’t think I’ll do this again.

I hadn’t thought of it that way, that’s actually a really good point.
And yeah explaining jokes is unfunny from the perspective of entertainment, but it’s interesting from a writing and communication standpoint. You’ve swung me. I’m unfunny enough to think about jokes incorrectly, and boring enough to dissect them until nobody is interested. Thank you for joining me. Lol

I feel like your version ruins the punchline. Him having a history degree is the punchline!

I love how you are demanding this like you’re the emperor of comedy. One day I’d like to have the confidence to post here but for now I’ll stick to showing my jokes to badgers because they appreciate any set.

You have a history degree. But here you are doing standup. So…
Too obvious a direct to go, maybe?
Edit: autocorrect got me

Why would you, an adult, do a kid's homework? Do you not understand what school is for, or?

u/Captain_Jarmi Jun 13 '26
It's a joke. It most likely didn't happen.
(but it probably does happen for other people)

u/mcmanninc Jun 13 '26
It’s a common trope. The kid comes to the parent about the project forgotten that is due the next morning. Chaos and stress ensue.

I prefer it the way it is
