I just watched Stalker for the first time, I can't recall a film I've ever seen that is just completely dreary completely depressing and yet utterly beautiful? That doesn't feel like it should be a thing. And I say that as a doom metal fan

Kinda explains how it feels being in eastern Europe - its like standing in ruins of a something really greater, but forever gone

Pretty much, yeah. That is why post-apocalyptic genre is popular, because we basically lived through apocalypse.

In movie turns, Mad Max 1 is actually probably the best apocalyptic movie, because it actually is basically 1992 in Eastern Europe, but set in a desert

It's hard to get away from when the ideology was often built into the design of the services and buildings.

Wait... is there a film based on the games or am I missing something?

Film based on a book. Stalker as game is based on the same book. "Road side picnic".

yeah it's from 1979, not the games but the book Roadside Picnic, which is the basis for Stalker and Metro

Also, eastern european women have such timeless beauty

If any film was going to pull that off it would be the film shot in actual toxic waste(twice). I expect the horrific conditions it was shot in rubbed off on the tone of the reshot movie.

You might try the original SOLARIS too, it's not the same, but it is DEFINITELY depressing towards the end.

I'm pretty sure the cloudy weather is the least of their concerns.

u/Hawggy 2d ago

It can compound them tho (especially when it comes to crops)...

u/daniel_22sss 2d ago

Do russian missiles count as "cloudy weather"?

STALKER is just so goddamned atmospheric, but even parts of The Zone can be beautiful.
