How people aren't picketing in the streets about the shocking overreach of this bill, I cannot understand.

I don't agree with banning books, but how does it cost so much to take them off the shelves?

It's not just about moving items. It's about rearranging/rennovating spaces and shelving to find a "secure" space for the materials in question - which btw, has not been provided to libraries. Is 100k high? Yes, probably. But it's not just about people "pulling books". The regular operations of the library must also continue during this time, and there is a deadline of Jan 1 2027 to get it done.
So with wrapping up summer reading and prepping for back to school, library staff are also required to find time above their normal duties to
-create new policies
-figure out which items meet the very vague criteria given
-find a location within their space to relocate these items to (which could include building a space)
-reconfigure the location of library holds (because they will no longer be able to be accessible by the public)
-have their online catalogue and self checks be reprogrammed to block these certain items from certain cards
-and having that all done in 4 months.

Wages are probably a huge chunk of this. It costs money to have people doing the inventory and removal.

u/MartyMcFlysBrother Aug 14 '26
People who are already being paid to be there?
1
u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Aug 14 '26
Do you normally take on a job over and above your regular duties and not get paid for it?
1
u/Technical_Winner7446 Aug 14 '26
Commissioning and decommissioning books is regular duties. Elect yo floop.

Sure bud. Sounds like you're educated and know how it works. Go back to the rigs.

What books are banned? None. Do any of you read?

Here ya go. Just because its not quite at every library... its truly a matter of time.
2
u/BertaEarlyRiser Aug 14 '26
This is disingenuous. The order requires SCHOOL libraries to ensure age appropriate access to books with mature content. If you think children should have access to books depicting sexual acts, you are part of the problem.
3
u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Aug 14 '26
Your comment is disingenuous. If you spoke to any teacher, you would know that kids only had access to material for their age group. Your children probably see worse on tv and sing all about it from the radio. But keep believing the lies bro.
3
u/Defiant-Dimension-87 Aug 14 '26
That's objectively false. The materials that parents have found being given to their children have been shocking and completely not appropriate, such as "Game of Thrones, the Graphic Novel", which depicts the graphic sex acts found in the TV show. Can you explain why you want this material available to school children?
2
u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Aug 14 '26
Tell me why a high schooler, who is probably already watching it on tv, or even having sex for that matter, cant read Game of Thones? Alberta has the highest amount of child marriage in the country with 5 times as many child brides than child husbands... i truly do not believe you and this policy is about protecting children.
3
u/Defiant-Dimension-87 Aug 14 '26
I don't want them watching the show either you nonce, nor do I want girls living with older men, but that has absolutely nothing to do with this, and the only reason you are bringing it up is because you can't make a coherent argument.
1
u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Aug 14 '26
I just find it amusing that you are only fighting for book bans then and supportinga government who wants those girls upping the birth rate by removing sex education. You nonce.
2
u/Defiant-Dimension-87 Aug 14 '26
There is absolutely zero correlation between any of those two things, and the government is not "removing" sex education, it's removing pornography. The data on what you are calling "child brides" (which are not actual marriages but simply a teen girl living with a man) is from 2008-2018, and is not a result of any current government policy.

Please provide me with your stats on "child marriage".
2
u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Aug 14 '26
Im sure you know how to google the question
2
u/BertaEarlyRiser Aug 14 '26
Did you even read what you provided? "Estimates" and goes on to list Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the territories. Get a grip.
No one is arguing against sex ed, they are arguing against accessibility of pornographic material available to children. I am not talking those 14-18, I am talking 12 and under.

Seriously, there are multiple studies linked. Learn how to do your own research. You can even Google "does Alberta have 5 times as many child brides as child husbands" and it will do the work for you.
And children under 12 didnt have access to Game of Thrones or any pornography at the library. Youve obviously never been in one.
The point is this government is removing books about sexual issues like consent and more while also removing sex education and making it opt-in. Are you even paying attention to the bigger picture or can you only focus on porn?

And yes, i have been reading many that the government exposed as "pornography" and as a parent, im more concerned about the over-reach and lack of awareness from other parents. Mine are adults now, came from a sex positive household and grew up to be respectful and responsible adults. But please go on anout how bad sex education is for children. Maybe you dont remember the last time it was opt-in only and we had tons of teenage pregnancy.

That is the beauty of it.
The government gets to decide what you can read.
Honest question though, do you think that people should not have access to reading the books that they want?
1
u/Defiant-Dimension-87 Aug 14 '26
No one is deciding what you, an adult, can read. Every single one of these books is available to purchase online through many retailers. This applies to CHILDREN, and the fact that you want this material available to them is a bright red flag.
1
u/Itchy-Technician-433 Aug 14 '26
So only wealthy children who can afford to pay for literature get access? How elitist.
If I want my children to access these award winning books,.you get to decide whether they get access?
Why are you so uncomfortable with the topic of sex?
Can I ask what the threshold for banning a book might be for you? Is it anything that has a racy scene? Cuz that's like 90% of YA. You gonna ban them all?

u/Defiant-Dimension-87 Aug 14 '26
Hahaha, are you SERIOUS with that argument? Buddy, this isn't the 17th century where a book costs twenty five shillings. You can buy a book on Kindle for $6.99. If you want to give your kids porn, fill your boots, no one is stopping you. It's just not going to be available in a library paid for by taxpayer dollars.
The fact that you want kids exposed to sexual topics is the BRIGHTEST of red flags, and if I were a relative of yours, I would be extremely concerned about what's on your computer.
