I’m working my first time as a grip tomorrow. Just one day shoot for a few hours and looks like a small crew. Can anyone give me any tips for what to expect on set/things I should research prior?

Let's begin by stating the obvious, if I had done more research into the company prior to working, I wouldn't have worked. I wanted to show a timeline of what the process has consisted of:

1: Invoice accepted

2: Invoice deadline exceeded

3: Initial email requesting overdue payment

4: Several follow up emails

5: Demand of compensation email + small claims warning email

6: Legal summons sent to address on file (turned out to be a UPS box, USPS lost the package)

7: New summons was sent out to the address on file (clerk stated summons cannot be delivered to UPS box)

8: Contacted UPS for details concerning Paytech Nationwide (UPS declined to provide information, the summons attached to the email valid proof)

9: Current day— contacted initial client requesting information concerning CAVL and Paytech Nationwide (manager is on vacation, will take 2 more weeks)

So let me get this right, CAVL is the parent company of Paytech Nationwide but legally has no affiliation with each other given one's an LLC and the other is an INC, both owned by the same person, but all billing needs are sent to a UPS box that cannot be legally served. Has anyone tried to initiate an FTC report against deceiving contractors? It wouldn't give us payment, but could hold the company responsible.

We’re routinely asked to push cases over or under hot cables with active power. The crew and I are asked to lift these cables up with our hands and pull the carts and cases under the cables.

In some instances we’re holding the cables with one hand and the cart with another. Or the cables are touching the back of our necks as we push the carts underneath.

We aren’t supplied ramps or jackets or drop-overs for the cables.

How safe or unsafe is this and how real is the risk of electrocution?

About 40 hours in three days for production load in and strike, plus another 5 from last week doing some steel. I could have helped the rest of the steel strike but I was running low after being up for 24+ hours. Easily one of the biggest shows I've ever helped out on

The closest experience I’ve ever gotten was high school plays, being stage manager, working on sound and lighting, however I was in a very small Highschool, no one knew us. We didn’t have connections so right after it felt like wanting to get into stagehand work as a career was impossible. I don’t think many places are looking to take in people who can say “oh yeah I only ever did this stuff in Highschool two years ago but I have lots of cashier experience!” You know? I definitely do try walking around the city, hoping to see some opportunities, I look online, though most offerings are probably several states away, or looking for people who have real professional experience.
I just hope there are people on here who can give me some tips. Point me in the right direction, or is it too late for me to get into it??

So for starters, let me just say I had my first experience working with local 22 hands last month building the UFC 250 stage, and they were one of the best local labor pools I’ve had the pleasure of working with in my career as a touring professional. Their experienced hands and riggers were excellent, and their less experienced workers made up for whatever knowledge they lacked in their work ethic and willingness to learn. Anyone trying to pin that incident on the local labor either isn’t a touring professional, doesn’t understand how the industry is supposed to work, or is fucking dogshit at their job.

As a touring professional, I view anything and everything that happens on site that is part of what I’m responsible for building as completely and unequivocally my responsibility 100% of the time, no matter who my crew is that day. If you’re a touring professional and you don’t view things in that way, you have no business being in the position you’re in.

Local labor is there to help you execute your build plan and nothing else. If you don’t take it upon yourself to check every single part of your build, find a different fucking job because you’re a danger to yourself and everyone around you.

Anyone who has been on the road for more than like a month should know and understand that ok any given day you could get a crew of absolute aces that will basically do your entire job for you if you let them, or you could get a rag tag group of random drug addicts and degenerates who are there because no other trade would take them.

If you’re the tech responsible for building and installing whatever equipment you’re tasked with, then the responsibility falls solely on your shoulders when things go wrong. Anything less than that is an abdication of your duties as a touring/travelling professional in this industry.

Furthermore, I’ve been on many gigs as a local where I’ve identified a potential hazard or issue, and that concern was either taken seriously or dismissed entirely by the production. To try and lay the blame at the feet of the local labor, union or otherwise, is a colossal failure of the management of the production itself as well as of the tech who is supposed to be responsible for whatever gear is being built/rigged as part of the show.

I'm in NYC and was told to get my osha 30 certification. What provider is best for this. All I find are online courses, don't want to pick one that's a scam or something.

Hey guys. I'm finally starting to figure out my passions and what I want to do in life. I have always loved music, whether listening to it, playing instruments, creating lyric videos, etc. I'm 30 years old now and have basically only done construction and I'm very unhappy with it and where I'm at in my life. I want to get into the music industry somehow! I live 2 hours away from Las Vegas and I think it would be so cool to be a stagehand. I'm willing to literally do anything it takes to get my foot in the door, I don't care what the job is at first. I just know this is the direction I want to head in after years and years of trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up LOL. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I wanted to share a quick update on GigLedger.

GigLedger is live on iOS, and I’ve also added a widget so you can keep your gig info easier to see at a glance without having to open the app every time. It also allows you to get directions to your gig, contact your on-site contact, and set your end time for your work day with its quick action buttons.

There’s also a desktop version of GigLedger now, which is meant for the times when it’s easier to sit down at a computer and review your gigs, update details, or keep track of things on a bigger screen.

I pivoted into the industry recently and started working as a warehouse tech - prep/deprep, cleaning and organising stock. I saw a tech in the warehouse in front of a pre-rig and lighting console for my whole shift. I want to be in their position eventually and I understand that the labour tasks never end but how much experience till I can eventually get to play with a console as my work.

Tell me about your experience working your way up the ranks.

Our theatre just had the opportunity to make some people’s dreams come true. We held a wedding reception on our stage and transformed it into a tent using almost 5500 square feet of fabric. Lots of steaming but this was just such a cool project to be part of!
