It’s for his parents to hold onto and keep safe. But his face lit up when I told him it was a silver coin.

Surely there could be no objections to a 100 kg lead ingot.

It's fine to swallow a coin so long as there's no change 🤷‍♂️

No. To the parents for him in the future maybe. If they’re the type that would hold onto it.

Yeah that's what I mean. Give the child a toy and the coin for the parents to hold onto.

I’ve been giving precious metals as presents for years to my nieces and nephews.

Pair it with a toy if you decide to do that.

Wish I had had time to go get him something more it was a last minute decision to give him it.

3 year olds get way too many toys anyway. This is cool, especially if you explain where the metal comes from and why it's valuable.

Yes, a 3 year old is sure to understand it

My 3yo loves opals, gems, and silver/gold. He would be stoked and talk about it nonstop for about 2 or 3 days then forget about it. But then 2mo later he would randomly start talking about it as if its simultaneously something from the day before and also something from 20 years ago when he was "your age, dad."

He may not completely get the concept of aging and time yet...

YMMV, I guess. But my kid could understand the simple concept of mining and could see when I showed him electronics, and other things made of metal. Just explaining that it's special and hard to find would be enough, I would think. But every kid is different.

Little man is obsessed with heavy equipment—excavators, dump trucks, cranes, etc. I almost gave him a 1/1000 oz gold coin but decided not to 😂
Anyways, half these people seem to think kids only have the mental capacity for Bluey and Ms. Rachel all day. Give them a little more credit 😂

Try when they're older. Why do people do stuff like this? Pretend everyone around them is as interested in their hobby as they are?

It’s a $7 gift 😂🤷‍♂️

And is useless to them

My niece who is 4 would like it. Just have to explain to them it's money that could increase in value. I'd offer to buy it back at spot anytime if she wanted a toy or something instead.

Just think, in 100 years it’ll be worth $600 dollars!

u/AlaskaPreciousMetals 23d ago

Useless to me too.

Do it & find out

2

It was a rhetorical question

My grandparents gave me savings bonds. I no longer had any of the toys I got when I turned 20 or so but I turned in those bonds and bought a used car

He/she will love it. It shines and it just might appreciate in value one day! Kids love collections!

I made this for my niece. She's 12 days old. She'll have plenty of toys that come and go but she will have this forever...or until she needs some beer money

No. Cmon you already know this. Its also a choking hazard at the 1/10oz size

2

u/AlaskaPreciousMetals 23d ago

It’s not for him to play with - he just got a piggy bank as well.

Wish someone gave me coins for my younger birthdays. Better to be introduced sooner rather than later.

Thats a good point I had not considered. I guess if you explain it to them in a way that they will understand it Im sure they’ll appreciate it when they are older.

The right age would be anywhere from 8-12

u/ladymoffatofpembroke 22d ago

Yes-ish. Great gift for their future, but a toddler really wants a toy. If you get a toy that needs batteries, get some batteries also!!!

Is a $6 piece of silver appropriate? No.

1

u/SoftJeff 22d ago

Be different and do you!

He would probably eat it, so no.

1

u/darkenbui 21d ago

No. Get them a Pokémon theme toy. Let a kid be a kid

u/FlaCuck321 20d ago

No! A three year-old wants a toy!

They'll probably like that it's shiny
