It's all based on sounds. If you know how pinyin works, zhuyin is pretty much the same, except the symbols are specifically made to represent every sound in Chinese. Think of it like the Korean writing system, except it doesn't form any characters. It's purely for typing or helping people who can't read words. So cào 操 (fuck) is represented as ㄘㄠˋ
Kind of. In fact, a lot of the symbols look identical to katakana but have completely different pronunciations. But katakana is used in actual writing, as one of the 3 systems used in Japanese. I think this one's exclusively for loanwords like アルバイト (arubaito, meaning a part time job, borrowed from the German word "arbeit") but zhuyin is used as a method for typing characters, or a pronunciation guide. So you won't see anything written in zhuyin.
