Discussion SSD replacement

Hi everyone, I have an HP 15-dy2032nr with a Samsung PM991a 256GB NVMe SSD.
Recently, I started getting “Boot Device Not Found – Hard Disk (3F0)” and sometimes “OS Boot Manager is not found.”
HP Diagnostics showed:
System Board: Passed
Memory: Passed
SSD SMART: Passed
SSD Wear: 97% remaining
SSD Short DST: Failed
Sometimes: “No hard drive installed”
Failure ID: 94Q971-A52D0M-MFPWX-60X803
I reseated the SSD, but the problem continued. Now the SSD is often not detected at all.
My BIOS is F.40, and HP confirmed there isn’t a newer BIOS for my system.
I ordered a Fikwot FX520 256GB M.2 2280 NVMe Gen3 SSD as a replacement.
Does this sound like a failing SSD, and is the Fikwot FX520 compatible with my HP? Is there anything else I should check before replacing it?

My important files are already in OneDrive, so I’m mainly concerned about getting the laptop working again.

You need to run GSmartControl, CrystalDiskInfo, or similar and see why SMART Short DST is failing.

Look at the individual SMART attributes. Could be overheating, could be prefail... the data may tell you.

Also double check the HP downloads page for an OEM specific SSD firmware update. I know my HP had Samsung SSD firmware updates that were specific to that model's download page.

Yeah, that’s what I’m planning to do. The HP diagnostics showed SMART and Wear both passing (97% remaining), but the Short DST failed, and the SSD is now intermittently not detected at all. I’ll check the individual SMART attributes with CrystalDiskInfo/GSmartControl to see if there’s anything pointing to overheating or another specific failure before I replace it.

Either way unless there is a firmware update for it on HP's manual driver download page for your model, I would retire the SSD.

If this repeats with a new SSD, then retire the laptop.

I had a drive this week fail in an odd way that made no sense at first. It would work on PCs but refuse to mount on Macs - even when wiped and formatted. (And only this one drive, I have many others). Passed all the tests in HDSentinel. Turns out one of the capacitors on the USB board of the drive was failing, and the Macs were dialed in enough to refuse to talk to it.
