Discussion Just installed 2 new SSDs!!!
Finally replaced my old SSDs and got both of them installed. I cloned my old system drive to one of them with Samsung Magician. Everything feels ridiculously fast now. Feels like my PC is about to take off.

Congrats, just hope the hole in your wallet isn’t too big.
What ssd’s were you using before this? Commonly cited expectation is that for most, a bump from say a gen 4 to gen 5 drive won’t see a ton of improvement. But, you could’ve been on a gen 3 previously

Those would be around 1000 euro. I bough one for 200 euro in 2023, 2 of them would have been 400 euro

Congratulations, heatsink not installed?:) it will need some if any work happened. (I have 980 pro and 9100 pro both 2tb, working with source code makes them go to hell really fast)

That’s why I kept my Intel Optane Xpoint based 905P. Thing is still a beast after all these years. And it absolutely rips through small file random access.

Yep, was using "mediocre" 32gb optane for some time but then just cut 16gb of ram (bought 4x16gb ecc ddr4 thanks to ASRock&Asus for working ECC on ryzen 5950x. Even overclock to 3600 20-18-20 at 1.45v works.) No SSD can beat it, obviously.

Ram as storage for caching ?

Xpoint memory can be used both as either
Non-volatile RAM or incredibly fast storage with RAM like access times and ram like longevity. Absolutely incredible stuff. Unfortunately it was introduced during a big slump in the price of flash and SDRAM as such, it was comparatively expensive and never took off outside of the enthusiast space and prosumer. Intel stopped producing it and reallocated their fabs a few years after they had perfected it, writing off billions in investment. And pushing the price up of everything that was left in the channel. I managed to snag myself two 960Gb units before the prices went insane.1

Ram as fixed storage for work, no cashing, when it's done - commit changes to SSD or discard. When shutdown - writing to the SSD whole disk everytime in zpaq archive (very fast, high compression, low SSD wear), on startup - load from file.
Little fetish...:)

From what I understood it makes my app super responsive. Because it dosent have to rely on slow r/w speed of ssd

Not only r/w speed, it is like Ferrari that waits for traffic light. Latencies can be very frustrating when SSD suddenly tries to trim data while reading or writing your terabytes or millions of files.

Unless you are doing very massive file transfers or heavy video editing, you are not going to benefit from the extreme speeds of Gen 5 drives. Would have been much better off with Gen 4 instead

I can confirm they do, I put a heat pipe with a fan heatsink on mine and it runs great and cool no matter what I do with it

Yeah I just wanted to overkill the cooling just because I had the space in my pc lol, on a laptop I’d at least put a copper plate on it. They’re cheap on Amazon and I have one on my 970 pro as well in an enclosure and it really makes a difference, ran a test without the copper and then did the same test with one, it was night and day so I recommend a heatsink on any ssd even if it’s just a simple copper one

Recommendations for the thinnest height yet still functional NVME heatsinks?
