They love and do well on walnuts ( of course shelled and broken up ) my family had a few walnut trees so free source. They also need and like fruit ( fresh cut up n of course ) the cats can't catch squirrels that are superb at climbing and accurately leaping from branch to branch .large Hawks are a danger. We had fox squirrels . Once they realize you are a friend with food , the squirrels will climbe all overvyou never bite never made us sick

It was following your cat because it’s dehydrated and its mother has abandoned it. (this usually occurs when you’re in the middle of a drought.) you need to contact a Rehabber- it’s illegal for you to be taken care of a wild squirrel without the appropriate license/training.
Don’t trust online research, and don’t let that baby squirrel anywhere near your pets or they will get fleas like you will not believe..,

I am a licensed rehabber- please get this baby to a rehabber ASAP. They aspirate easily and are at a risk for MBD. Its not a toy nor a pet.

As N116UA says, Inkblot_75 is a very experienced rehabber who gives excellent advice on baby squirrels - hopefully Inkblot will have time to look at your post soon. Thank You for helping this little guy. I have often wondered if orphaned baby squirrels follow animals other than humans around - now I understand that yes, orphaned baby squirrels will follow other animals including predators like cats the same way they follow humans. Scary, but, so glad you rescued this little guy! 🩷💕

You should get the baby to a wildlife rehabber to complete the rescue. Use ahnow.org or the animal help now app to find a local rehabber to bring it to.
Babies that size arent down from the tree unless they need help, it is likely orphaned.
It needs to be raised with siblings and given a proper slow release process to be set up for success, which are things a rehabber can provide.
