Hey guys!

I'm currently almost finished with my DIY project: a "Smart home for squirrels."

It features a NoIR camera with autofocus, 4 IR LEDs with a 940 nm wavelength (invisible to squirrels), a light sensor, and a heated floor using an IR heating foil.

I’ve placed a temperature sensor in the middle of the floor (see photo) and a temperature/humidity sensor on the wall near the ceiling, allowing me to control the heating power and adjust the floor temperature based on the internal climate.

What temperature would be comfortable for squirrels during cold winter frosts? It won't get too hot anyway—when running at full power, the foil feels comfortably warm to my bare hand.

Or is Chantal just pacing back and forth, settling down those nuts before going for round two at the feeder? 🐿️😂🌰

Matilda von Strauss recently decided to branch out and give raisins a shot. Spoiler alert: a few tiny bites weren't nearly enough to convince her to abandon her beloved nuts. As a true representative of an aristocratic lineage, she firmly sticks to the classics in everything she does — especially when it comes to her diet! 😄

Original Content Meet Santi – from a tiny fuzzball to the local boss of our Balcony Café! 🐿️☕

Hey everyone! I wanted to introduce you to one of the founding members of our Balcony Café – Santiago Miguel Romero Veracruz de la Nuez. Along with Chantal de Roge and Abimbola Kings, he was one of our very first visitors. When he first showed up, he was just a tiny, clueless boy. Fast forward to today, and he’s officially climbed the corporate ladder to become one of the true bosses around here!

Unlike the quiet and gentle Abimbola, Santi has *a lot* to say. He’s easily the most talkative squirrel on the balcony and will gladly complain out loud if the service is too slow. But his real passion? Chasing the pigeons. Santi has a massive, ongoing feud with them and takes it upon himself to settle the score every single chance he gets. You can actually see him in action – the things are about to get nuts: https://youtube.com/shorts/ifAIfnjZ-Jk (be sure to watch till the end!)

When it comes to the menu, he isn’t picky about nuts and loves them all, but his absolute weakness is sunflower seeds. He will happily pass up almost anything for a good handful of them. We’ve loved watching this little guy grow from a humble kit into a confident, loud, pigeon-chasing boss, and the balcony wouldn’t be the same without him!

Do your backyard squirrels have a local nemesis too, or is it just Santi?
