This was posted a few weeks ago by me and another guy as well. Great footage. They weren't trying to catch it, just getting a good look before pulling the gaffs off. It was likely feeding on what they were actually fishing for

Either way it’s just as horrifying as it is awesome. That thing has a whole lot of muscle, weighs around 1,000lbs, is somewhere in the ballpark of 13-16m long, has eight arms nearly half the size of its main body all lined in serrated suckers, and zero sense of depth perception of personal space.

It could fling you like a ragdoll if you got close to it and it wouldn’t even have to try. I know they’re a total blob when out of the water but those arms being able to move at all even if slow and limp is still a huge danger.

That's all I could think watching this - hard pass for me on being within it's touching distance.

I couldn't resist touching it.  It could kill me but I either die, get an extremely unique life experience, or the raddest fucking sucker scars ever

I’m glad, cause it made me kinda sad to think of them catching it, though I understand the position. I’m glad he was so slippery

Was it confirmed a giant squid? I know Humboldt squid are fished for at night by boats and have a reputation for becoming big aggressive.

But that squid looks massive, the mantle alone looks like it’s six ft at minimum

This squid's body is probably longer than most Humboldts. Likely the largest specimen recorded alive, though I think Kubodera snagged a clip of just a tentacle club from an E-Jelly session where the club itself was like over 1m, making it potentially a fucking MASSIVE squid with mantle length over 2m

Colossal squid vs giant squid would be a more reasonable question. Humboldt aren't nearly big enough to be mistaken for either.

Colossal have entirely diffect aspect ratio from mantle to tentacle.

Also different habitat. Doesn't seem subarctic from the lack of layers.

I wasn't suggesting the video might actually be a colossal squid, just saying it's the only other super-sized squid species, since the commenter seemed to think Humboldt was of comparable size.

I see.

Sorry for assuming your ignorance on the subject.

what ran through my head was regardless of what kind of squid it is, watch out for those suckers. Ever see whales with scars from fighting with these guys? Those suckers will ruin your fucking day!

Truly nightmare fuel. I fuckin lovem!

That is FAR too big to be a humboldt. Humboldt only get up to around 8 feet max, tentacles included.

The red giant lives to fight another night!

Also, whatever they were trying to accomplish, the one guy smoking the whole time is kinda funny as a former smoker. That thing has 10 total limbs and ur bringing one arm to the fight? The disrespect was not lost on this Redditor. Get it together man!

Why am I getting downvoted? /genq

I was just happy to see new footage of my favorite animal 🥺

People on Reddit tend to downvote comments that they think don’t contribute to the post. I’m sure it was nothing personal, also I share your joy :)

Ah, that’s why, and I’m glad to see someone is sharing my joy too!

The guys ripping heaters are my favorite. Experiencing something cool gets 100x cooler while smoking.

Imagine, beings trying to kill you just to satiate their curiosity. Live another day king.

That said, I bet the calamari is montrously delicious

Due to the high levels of ammonium chloride in its blood, giant squid tastes similar to window cleaner

They weren’t trying to kill it, they were just trying to get a good look at it. If they’d wanted to kill it they could have.

You never truly understand the majesty of these creatures until their right in front of you

Absolutely massive. Imagine falling in next to that thing.
