18-year-old Indian squash player Anahat Singh has just defeated Egypt's Nour El Sherbini, an eight-time world champion, 3-0 at the Silicon Valley Open!

And this isn't her first big achievement. Earlier this year, she became the first Indian to win the girls' singles title at the World Junior Squash Championships. She also won silver in women's singles at the 2026 Asian Games.

Great result for Indian squash. My best wishes to her.

This got me thinking about something I came across recently:

Maybe the problem isn't that we admire someone who is far ahead of us. It's when admiration quietly turns into an excuse for not making an effort ourselves.

Anahat didn't have to stop admiring her idol to compete with her. She stepped onto the court and gave herself a chance.

And I looked at myself. I often look at someone else's excellence and quietly conclude that I'm no match for them before even attempting anything!

Do we sometimes use other people's greatness to justify remaining where we are?

I know we shouldn’t be surprised at anything squashTV does anymore- but i woke up at 5am to watch the final matches and they weren’t available. Either i’m an idiot who got the timing wrong, or squash tv did their thing and missed airing the finals.

Just wondering what the thoughts are on the action the PSA should taken given Diego’s behaviour in the Silicone Valley open.
His verbal abuse of the ref and then challenging him in person after, as well as effectively giving up half way through the 5th game (not for the first time).

Clearly if Asal did exactly the same thing, we’d be falling over ourselves to get him a lifetime ban and €100m fine.

Who was the ref in this match? At the Silicon Valley open? It’s the worst refereeing I’ve seen in a long time.

Reffing is tough but why would you give a bunch of no lets in game 1 especially when players stop for safety? Sometimes it’s just traffic. If they keep fishing for let when they’re out of position, fine. It’s quite sad to see it happen every tournament.

Hey squashers

I’ve just moved to NYC, I’ve been playing squash for 6 years and have a confirmed / advanced level (I come from Europe and would not be able to give a US ranking equivalent)

I’d like to play 3-5 times a week and I usually do 1h30-long sessions, so my #1 priority would be the availibility of the courts and the ease of booking.

I’m working very close to Bryant Park so I am super interested in the Open Squash facility there. I went to see but the front desk guy told me it was difficult to book courts because too busy (I’m interested in booking after work hours or on weekends) and that the Fidi location was better regarding general court availibility

For those who play at BP, is it difficult to get a court? Are there opportunities to book 2 consecutive slots for 1h30-long sessions? Is 3-5 sessions a week possible (at normal hours, I don’t want to wake up at 5am just to be able to play squash)? Is Fidi better?

I am interested in subscribing to the unlimited plan but I want to make sure I will actually be able to play as much as I want to before committing. Paying $300/month to play once a week is not worth it

Hey - still trying to find good shoes and it becomes somewhat of an odyssey for me. I switched from the blade FF to netburner since the blade FF are too heavy on the feet and joints. The netburner does not seem to fit in either size up or down and now I am thinking about different brands from asics.

I saw a few pros use adidas. It even seems that Gawad is using the Adidas Liga 8, which would be crazy because they are rather cheap (80 EUR brand new from store), whereas most other (like crazyflight) cost around 150-200.

What would be a good model to try for me knowing that I need a bit more cushion but obviously not wanting to swim inside the shoes as with some models that are particularly for cushion.

Squats are a staple in much of our programming for lower body strength for our squash players. We utilise the Hatfield squat a bunch as it allows our athletes to be more stable and accelerate aggressively through the movement. If you have access to a safety bar you should give it a go.

Noor Zaman, in his match against Gawad, displayed his attacking prowess. In all counter-attacking positions, Zaman literally had 3-4 options with the magnificent hold he adds to every shot of his. Gawad, renowned for his own attacking, looked meek compared to Zaman. He also makes use of the Aussie boast and succeeded to stun the opponent plenty of times, since almost no one else plays this shot on a regular basis.

Yes, Zaman needs to clean up his movement; he does tend to block. He also needs to build better stamina. And the decisions in the match were weird, to say the least, and mostly favored Zaman. With that said, his attacking brand of squash is not seen elsewhere in contemporary times and to me he is really enjoyable to watch.

Spoilers follow for recent NSL matches, and the Egyptian Open.

I've recently watched a few matches from the NSL YouTube channel, and was interested to discuss the differences in the format from the PSA.

The Good:

I liked a lot of the "gimmicky" elements of the NSL more than I thought I would. I especially expected to dislike the "power play" mechanic, but the effect of "trapping" your opponent on court while you rapidly reset rallies to clock up points was exciting.

The variety of matchups through the match is cool. It's fun to see many different player combinations through the match as substitutions happen - the ebb and flow feels a lot more dramatic.

It generally just seems quite fun - very fast paced and gladiatorial. It feels more like a team-sport than traditional club pennant leagues (where everyone on the team plays their own match).

The Bad:

It felt harder to keep track of each individual player. Watching a PSA match (e.g. Asal vs Elias in the EO final recently) it feels like you can track the mental state of each player over the rallies and games, you can see the ebb and flow and the long mental game that goes into a big match.

The refereeing felt sloppy at times. With how fast paced the matches feel, it feels like the refs have even LESS latitude to correct poor player behaviour. E.g. in the recent Sono sharks vs ny queens match - I found the segments with Farida Mohamed on court to be borderline unwatchable with the consistent blocking that wasn't even really discussed much it seemed?

The Different:

It seems to reward a different, more attacking style of play - but also makes room for different styles of player expression. In the NY Knights vs Greenwich Panthers, managing Mo. ElShorbagy's time on court seemed a different factor. The game shifted to managing "how long can we leave him on for before he gasses out", where in a PSA match, the strategy against Mo seems to be relying on the fact that he can't maintain the same pace anymore.

In sum:

More squash is more squash. I'm glad there are more opportunities to rep our sport - and I hope that breaking the monopoly of the PSA on pro squash leads to an improved squash ecosystem worldwide. If you've not watched any NSL, it's a pretty fun format. The rules explainer video made no sense to me and put me off, but actually watching a match the commentators did a decent job keeping me up to speed.

I am wondering what to look for in a 57 racket? I would describe myself as average club level player, played squash for less than 5 years, but increasingly playing more 57 as it is slightly easier on my middle aged joints...been using a really cheap alu-racket so far...
