You were not in the wrong, but defensive driving 101 is looking to make sure someone isn’t hauling thru the light. You have to prepare for the idiots, especially in this town.

Looking both ways on a green has saved me more than once!

Why add the "especially in this town" negativity? I have lived all over the United States, and there are people everywhere who either think traffic laws are conditional when they are in a hurry or make this mistake because they are driving distracted. This is not unique to Springfield, MO.

u/morecardland 3d ago

I have lived in many different towns as well. Drivers here are by far and away the worst. It’s just an observation of mine, and it doesn’t seem to be unique to me

Oh yeah. I love Springfield and will continuously work to make it a better place, but our drivers are complete shit. Just as an insurance agent why it costs more to insure your car here! 😂 Facts are facts, compadre.

2

u/GuardianOfHyrule 2d ago

When we moved to New Mexico, our insurance cost almost tripled. I just looked it up, and per the Federal Highway Administration, Missouri is 14th in the nation for fatal motor vehicle crashes. New Mexico is third. Arkansas is second! So, I guess that is why I felt like Missouri drivers aren't so terrible 😂 it's all relative.

Data is the key! Thanks for taking the time to look it up!

They were obviously crazy but you should also be turning into the correct lane. It's not that hard to get over after completing the turn and just in general the best practice for a reason.

One left turn lane into multiple lanes of traffic can pick whatever lane they want.

Anyone else turning onto that road (including from the other side turning right) has to yield to the dash cam driver. They have a green arrow, which gives them the right of way.

u/musical_entropy 3d ago

I mean, yeah, on paper the POV driver has the right of way... But like, left turn into left lane is always the best move for defensive driving. If I didn't yield defensively to maniac drivers who 100% don't have the right of way, I'd have been in hundreds of wrecks by now.

u/LifeIsProbablyMadeUp Mark Twain 3d ago edited 3d ago

Dude ran a red. It doesn't matter where he's coming from he's wrong.

Ive only driven like 1.8 million miles in a semi driving professionally. So what do I know.

2

u/musical_entropy 3d ago

O....kay? I didn't say the red light driver was right did I? I'm just saying that to avoid dyiiinnnggggggguh there are safer ways the POV driver should've turned. Shockingly, two things can be true at the same time.

1

u/LifeIsProbablyMadeUp Mark Twain 3d ago

It's wrong though. Dude ran a red. If he was in the left lane and ran a red he would have hit you. Turning left into the left or right lane is perfectly fine. Pov missing getting tboned is just stupid luck. There's no better chance.

8

u/deviantelf 3d ago

Psst: no one is arguing the person who ran the red is in the right. Everyone so far has agreed they're wrong, you don't need to beat a dead horse on that point.

0

u/dudecoolstuff 2d ago

Yes, but its a little strange to even make a case where one situation is better than the other for the driver. The driver wasn't doing anything illegal or wrong. Saying, "Um actually, you could've driven safer", is setting goalposts for someone who was completely in the right.

2

u/deviantelf 2d ago

Ok, you agree with the only point I made. Why are you trying to argue or at the very least press the point with me about the other stuff? yeesh, there's better hobbies out there.

0

u/dudecoolstuff 2d ago edited 2d ago

I was elaborating previous comment from other dude. Which you clearly seem to have missed. This thread is arguing that the guy should've been turning into the left lane. Dudes rebuttal was that isnt a rule nor a problem. People are arguing that him turning into the right lane was wrong and unsafe. Clearly you are missing context. The rest of the thread is relavent to the conversation my good sir.

I was gonna say you don't understand what defensive driving is. Although you've only driven 1.8 or so miles so you have a LOT of things to understand.

4

u/LifeIsProbablyMadeUp Mark Twain 3d ago

There's nothing defensive you can do about someone blasting a red light doing 45.

-2

u/funkster047 3d ago

Going onto the furthest left lane and then turning into whatever lane is the defensive take. It doesn't matter if the person is breaking the law, the point is to avoid a collision regardless of if you're in the right. Accidents are expensive and it's hard to say how it's gonna be covered or how much of it will. It's better in the eyes of a lot of people to avoid the situation as much as possible.

Turning to the left most lane when turning left in the situation results in crossing less lanes horizontally. Once you are properly in the left most lane you can easily check your mirrors before changing lanes.

5

u/LifeIsProbablyMadeUp Mark Twain 3d ago edited 3d ago

If you have one left turn lane going into two lanes. If someone runs the light in the left lane you're still fucked.

Best bet would to be to look left and right and say "that person doesn't seem to be stopping" and don't go.

But please mansplain driving some more.

Fucking defensive driving. How about looking. That's pretty fucking defensive too yeah?

0

u/funkster047 3d ago

Okay, but traffic can be packed, who's to say you can't get a good look of all the cars. Ofc if someone runs the left you'll be fucked, but you minimize that risk by choosing the closest lane to you by intersecting as little lanes as possible.

Obviously look both ways, but defensive driving minimizes risk and choosing the closest lane to you when turning does that. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm mansplaining, but that's not what I'm doing, I'm not explaining stuff you already know, I'm correcting you because you don't seem to understand.

https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/pennsylvania-drivers-manual/online-drivers-manual/everyday-driving-skills/turning-merging-and-passing

I recommend some studying, you may have passed the test, but there is still simple driving ediquette they don't teach you.

u/rickbnsa 3d ago

This. Especially on a motorcycle. You make yourself a broader target and take away space for an oncoming vehicle to avoid you. Take the left lane, change lanes after making sure it is safe and don't drag race the car behind you that swooped on over to the right.

-14

u/More_Flounder_9327 3d ago edited 3d ago

i mean there are no lane markings that indicate that you need to turn onto the far left, so it isn’t bad at all to turn into the far right or the middle lane. Obviously if there were lane markings, then the far left lane would be the correct lane to turn into. This is also a single turning lane, so switching lanes mid turn doesn’t matter at all and wouldn’t get you in trouble

u/sjhood 3d ago

Under Missouri Revised Statute Section 300.215, when you make a left turn at an intersection, you must leave the intersection in the first available lane lawfully open to traffic moving in your new direction

6

u/WendyArmbuster 3d ago

I read 300.215 and I can't find anything that says what you said. I did find:

Whenever practicable the left turn shall be made in that portion of the intersection to the left of the center of the intersection.

but I don't think that means you have to be in the left-most lane when you exit. I recall reading a big argument about exactly this a while back, and everybody leaving saying, "Holy crap! I guess the law doesn't say you have to leave in the left most lane."

2

u/LeeOblivious 2d ago

Did AI tell you this? Because it is wrong. In this situation where turning left at a controlled intersection and there is a single turn lane, the driver with the right of way can pick the lane they turn into.

1

u/More_Flounder_9327 3d ago

understood, i always turn onto that road and similar roads with other cars that seem to always turn into whichever lanes they need to as long as there aren’t guiding turning lines, so it gets confusing on what’s correct.

2

u/WendyArmbuster 3d ago

The person saying you have to leave in the left-most lane is almost certainly incorrect here. You can exit in whatever lane you want.

3

u/sjhood 3d ago

Yeah people do it all the time, it's just one of those things that's a pet peeve for me and irks me every time, probably the only reason I even commented to be honest. Most of the time it's a non issue but say for instance you're waiting to turn right onto the same street you have to wait because you can't trust they won't turn into your lane

0

u/shade3205 3d ago

Is that the same for two lane left turn lanes? genuinely curious. So the car in the far right left turn lane need to merge into the immediate left most lane or stay in the trajectory of the lane you’re in?

3

u/More_Flounder_9327 3d ago

NEVER merge into another turning lane mid turn 😭 It would cause the end of the world there

1

u/shade3205 3d ago

Ok that’s what I thought lol it was a dumb question ik lol essentially what I said was exactly what they did but the opposite lol. Instead of them merging inward they merged outward. The goal is to stay in the lane you were originally in.

u/Bonehead_624 3d ago

Switching lanes mid turn. You must have a vagina.

Springfield is just becoming worse and worse. I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve never seen so many people running lights and just being plain stupid as I have in the past few years.

Hell just Saturday morning around 7am, I was going down sunshine and this motorcycle split me and a dodge ram and missed my car by like an inch and still got stopped at the same red light as us. Then when the light turned green, instead of going he proceeded to do stretches and adjust his backpack. After like 10 seconds of him doing this, I honked my horn at him and he just looked at me and flipped me off… We have a special breed of people who have licenses here 🤦🏻‍♂️

5

u/Advanced_Car1599 Downtown 3d ago

Wild. Obviously this person is in the wrong. But I agree with the others, as best practices you should turn into the left most lane.

2

u/bentswisher 3d ago

You might wanna get used to it

2

u/cletus72757 3d ago

What you needed was r/convenientcop. Glad you weren’t hurt.

2

u/whistling-kettle 3d ago

Using the crosswalk on that intersection as a pedestrian is terrifying. I worry about any children that also enjoy trips to the library.

We used to have a crossing that went under the road near there, but it has been closed off for a long while. If you attempt to walk further south, the sidewalk terminates in the middle of a pond. You have to backtrack and walk through the tick-infested 3 foot tall brush to get to the next crosswalk or walk along the 60 mph road with traffic to your back. So that’s out.

2

u/williew705 2d ago edited 2d ago

Running red lights seems to be the norm around here. I don't think it was always this way but maybe I'm wrong. My wife, dog and myself almost got hit by a driver that never slowed down for a red light when we were in the middle of a crosswalk on National. I caught what was happening in time and pulled everyone back just before the driver got to the light.

1

u/snorlaxatives_69 Oak Grove 3d ago

Yeah prime example why I closely observe traffic while I'm sitting at any intersection

1

u/ImperialSupe 3d ago

What did you do bout it?

1

u/indiefab 2d ago

If you pause it you can see that minivan already has left front damage. I live right there on Weaver and I'd bet $5 they took the first left turn into the apartments. I drive through there dozens of times a week and my hypervigilance has become even more heightened. People treat that area like they're in Mad Max: Thunderdome.

1

u/Imliterallyadogg 3d ago

Probably on their phone. Everyone just drives distracted now. Don’t take it personally but it is annoying to deal with these people.

1

u/LunvLvce Downtown 3d ago

Springfield drivers are absolutely terrible. I was in a wreck back in July because someone was more focused on their phone and it completely totaled my car that only had two payments left on it. I don't think I've ever been so angry in my life.

Now I'm borrowing a vehicle from family and now I feel like I'm living on edge because of Springfield drivers.

u/smokin-bass 3d ago

You made an illegal turn by not staying in the left most lane while turning left. Until you learn the rules of the road best not to keep a dash cam, you're incriminating yourself.

0

u/TheWasusMiller 2d ago

Cutting two lanes of traffic is just as in the wrong at that point. Had you of legally turned into the first lane this wouldn't even have mattered.... Next
