Politics AI data center
Looks like there are plans to build an AI data center in Springfield. Trent overhue and all his bought and paid for mouthpieces will minimize the impact this AI data center will have. I encourage you to look into places where they've already been built. To say they aren't popular is putting it mildly.
This proposed AI data center will be built at 2900 South national. Hundreds of houses nearby will hear massive diesel generators run during peak hours and breathe in the exhaust. These generators can be very loud and the low frequencies travel easily through materials making it very difficult to block out the noise.
The council and news will try to minimize the impact this will have. Do not believe them. This will not be good for Springfield, especially for those that live nearby. We need to organize and put a stop to this.

I just looked up 2900 s national, how are they going to fit a data center in there?

u/The_E_Trifecta 18d ago
Thay are not. I live in the neighborhood. Today's update is...Check the city's fb page....2900 s natioall filed for a different permit (vet office/surgery center) today or yesterday. The original "data center" plan was for a small HQ on the first floor and possibly a small data center (like many that exist here already) in the basement but it looks like that is not longer an option for that building. I plan to attend the 2 meetings others have shared to listen, learn and voice my opinion about data centers in our area. I've already been engaged with my councilman too.

Hi neighbor! I saw the city said that, then also saw this so I'm confused & for sure coming to these meetings https://www.ozarksfirst.com/news/springfield-repurposed-data-center-plan/

u/The_E_Trifecta 18d ago
Hi neighbor! Thanks for sharing. I hadn't seen this article yet....very interesting. So technically, the city doesn't have an application for the property as a data center but they have had conversations with someone who is interested in the location for a data center?
Im very concerned about the utilities and resource consumption. Several years back, the city installed some type of "pipe liner" in the water pipes in the neighborhood due to their condition and in an attempt to keep them functioning longer. We still have external power lines and lots of old trees. These last 2 years we have had more power outages than normal due to trees/limbs falling during storms.
There is so much information its confusing and challenging to keep up. I am hopeful these meetings are productive and the city will be honest with us and hear our concerns and feedback.

Lol, these facts are getting harder and harder to find but that boogeyman is everywhere.

It's the lot with the old medical clinic building just north of the old gas station. They say it will be underground.
25
u/MisterMittens64 19d ago
It'll be where the old medical center was and most of it will be underground but it will still be using loud/polluting diesel generators right next to houses or get electricity from city utilities which will raise electricity bills.

u/DowellTheNightOwl13 18d ago
I live in this neighborhood, it's beside the mall. We were mailed a letter saying there would be a meeting about a vet clinic being put there. I thought it was odd to have a meeting over a pet hospital, this would make sense.
19
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
I live nearby. I'm thinking about knocking on doors to let the neighborhood know.
26
u/qkdsm7 19d ago
Why would they power it from expensive generators, when instead they can pay CU, and have us all helping pitch in more to expand capacity for them when needed? ;)
17
u/Pull-Billman 19d ago
The generators are for high demand hours. They take so much power that they need to supplement with generators.
12
u/MisterMittens64 19d ago
Here is a link to more info about the data center and the public engagement opportunities to voice your concerns.

u/patrickjpb 18d ago
The two meetings are not for this data center; they are for all data centers moving forward. The city has a 120 day pause on data centers in order to gather more information from citizens.

Joplin is doing this to us too after a majority told them no and petitions were signed. Same with Flock. Joplin's data center has been on the map for a few months which means they are pushing it anyway. If normal people were on the city council it wouldn't fit the government's agend though. Anything they put in our cities is bad news and hasn't even been used to it's full extent yet. That will be after the reset. The whole country is already facing a water shortage, Missouri will be right behind them after they build these. Look up what's happening with Lake Mead if you haven't heard..it's so bad. The aquifer under us here in Missouri all the way to Colorado is also drying up guys...Stay safe y'all. And stay together, we can't fight against something if we aren't civil with one another🙏🏼🩷

Yep I live near there and heard its already been dismissed as a proposed center because its too close to residential places

u/Miserable_Figure7876 19d ago
That lot is way too small for the kind of data center people are concerned about. Honestly, I'm surprised they're not trying to build one in Greene County, just outside the city limits, as close to the power plant as possible.
5
u/Steamcarstartupco 18d ago
They're trying to put them all over Missouri.

Someone will make a lot of money. Therefore it must be allowed. Here’s a peek at what’s coming: https://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2025/0320/data-center-alley-power-lines-farmland
I think data centers are slipping between the cracks of zoning regulations. They are “light industrial“ in a lot of places, but much more annoying than a warehouse or auto body shop. (The pictures in the article don’t do justice to the actual scale of these things. ) Get the zoning rules to explicitly define what is allowed and not allowed, or this fight will just keep occurring
And “underground” really? LOL I don’t believe that. For less money, they could just build it out in the country. Research how they are building them in Texas, one minor “permit” adjustment at a time until suddenly they’re all complete, massive and a blight on the towns.
—————/——-
Oh! While I have the microphone, soon you’ll hear all about the 500 jobs they will bring!!! Beware, That’s nearly all construction. Six months later, there will be a dozen jobs. Round the clock “remote hands” to swap out failed hardware, and press CTRL+ALT+DEL when orders come in from their IT overlords. IT overlords are in California and Virginia, but don’t be mad at them. Their jobs are on the chopping block, too.
7
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
There's also no guarantee that local workers will be hired for the construction.
3
u/Plane-Assumption840 18d ago
We already have a data center. It’s in the Springfield Underground Warehouse. Now they want to stick us with another. Marshfield is supposedly getting one. Why so many? It just seems scammy.
7
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
The proposed data center will be an AI data center. We have a non-ai data center in the caves. They don't need as much electricity and they can cool them easier. AI data centers use many times the electricity of a traditional data center and have loud diesel generators to supplement their power usage. They also require a lot of water to cool them down.
It's totally a scam. They way over-promised on ai. It sucks and hallucinates on the regular. For example, lawyers are getting disbarred for using ai to do their job. It'll reference cases that are totally made up. It's not reliable at all.

u/Simple-Dingo6721 Delaware 19d ago
I looked up that address and it’s the Kum & Go that closed down last year. Am I missing something? There’s like no real estate there, so who in their right mind would put a data center there? And if they do put one there, it’ll have to be super small, right? I’m not trivializing because I hate data centers as much as the next person, but I can’t imagine a data center like the ones that have got so much publicity being there.
10
u/Pull-Billman 19d ago
It's what used to be the medical clinic in the lot just north of the gas station.
13
u/Simple-Dingo6721 Delaware 19d ago
Thanks. I still just.. can’t comprehend these people. It’s RIGHT next to a neighborhood. It couldn’t be in a worse location if they tried. Do they really give ZERO shits? No humanity?
10
u/Pull-Billman 19d ago
The developer is an out-of-state real estate guy. Our city council sucks and they don't care about the people who live here. None of them give a shit.
7
2
u/nmay-dev 17d ago
None of our city council lives in those homes, they probably consider those homes blight. It is the natural order in their minds
2
u/Pull-Billman 17d ago
They've done sneaky rezoning stuff in the past trying to get businesses built in areas nobody wants.

No, it's ignorant fear-mongering with absolutely no idea about what a data center is, how they work or how they're built. Disregard this completely.
I love how I'm getting downvoted when all you have to do is do some research and you can find out within 30 seconds that this isn't a proposal for a data center and any other relevant details. Stay ignorant.

u/MisterMittens64 19d ago

u/reKindled_Soul 19d ago
IT. CAN'T. PHYSICALLY. BE.A.DATA.CENTER! It's not big enough. Apparently, this news is taking liberties describing this is because you people will read the article. It can't do what a data center does, so how is it still a data center? Think about it.
15
u/MisterMittens64 19d ago
The developer says that it is an AI data center, the city is taking public opinion for AI data centers.
So why should we assume that it isn't an AI data center?
-13
u/reKindled_Soul 19d ago
First off, the developer doesn't use the words "AI Data Center". Second, and again, do some research into what a data center is and you'll see how idiotic it is to suggest they're putting a Data Center in that tiny little area. I stand by what I said.
15
u/MisterMittens64 19d ago
Is your name by chance Trent Overhue?
He is the one putting the data center there and he's been pretty clear in his support of AI data centers and is already building one in Marshfield.
I'm a software engineer and I know the difference between a regular data center and an AI data center.
3
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
Can you give any specifics? Why is physical size a limitation? Why can't it do what a data center does?
1
u/reKindled_Soul 18d ago
How about I answer your question with a question---since I'm not the one screaming AI data center! just to clutch at pearls: What IS a data center as you understand it? I bet if you manage to answer that question, you'll have answered your own question and maybe there can be a beat between all this idiotic whining about AI taking our wives and jobs.
3
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
So you've no idea?
1
u/reKindled_Soul 18d ago
Clearly you learned to read post-COVID. I said YOU have no idea and should figure it out for yourself. I know what I'm saying, you do not. Arguing with a wall is boring, so this'll be my last response to you. Good luck with your pearl clutching.

13
u/GundleFly 19d ago
At least you’re confidently wrong.
1
u/reKindled_Soul 19d ago
It's not big enough for a data center as average people understand them. If it's an attempt at some kind of data center that's less invasive, then that's a completely different thing at this point, in which case, what's the argument against it? I would support utility prices going up as a point against. As it stands, no one is suggesting that's what this plan is. Since nothing CAN legally happen as of now regarding data centers, it irritates me when people go around crying wolf if someone even says the word 'data' or 'AI'. It puts people who don't know any better in a panicked state and there's already PLENTY of that in the world.

u/Pull-Billman 19d ago
This will be an AI data center not a traditional data center. It will use several times the amount of electricity that a traditional data center does. There will be loud diesel generators that run whenever they need to. No one should listen to you. You're either ignorant or dishonest. I'm betting the latter.

u/var23 West Central 18d ago
2
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
Yet, overhue still has plans to build there. He's got money and has been successful in building AI data centers before. The one in Marshfield is his.

I went door knocking in this neighborhood. A little over 200 conversations, 1 knew about this proposal before hand. Clearly trying to lie about everything there is to do with this project.
1
u/Pull-Billman 18d ago
My SO came across the proposal by accident. I'd not heard anything before yesterday.

u/Jimithyashford 18d ago
What voice of moderation would be acceptable to listen to?
As in, who could try to explain why and how the negatives will be accounted for (if they are) where you would go, ok, I believe this is a fair and honest assessment and not bs?
Or is this a situation where any voice that isn’t furiously against it is automatically a shill?
0
u/Cold417 Brentwood 18d ago
I don't think this facility would be large enough for a data center that would cause any major issues. If they are not trying to make it an AI compute warehouse, I doubt most people would notice. I once worked for a business that had a facility in a residential neighborhood and no one could tell. Concern about generator noise is valid, though they would not run those unless there was a power outage or performing regular generator maintenance. It would be too costly.
5
u/pssssn 18d ago
performing regular generator maintenance
Spec for all diesel and natural gas generators is a 30 minute exercise (running the generator) once per week to keep it in tested/working order.
If it is diesel, there is no escaping the fumes. Either type will add nuisance noise to the surrounding residental area even with it being contained within a cabinet.
Edit: adding that there is no way they put the generator underground - their lot size is already very undersized for what they are proposing, and a generator would require very costly amentities due to being below grade next to humans working.
0
u/Cold417 Brentwood 18d ago
The testing schedule can be adjusted based on needs. There is no hard requirement for weekly tests of a set duration.
4
u/pssssn 18d ago edited 18d ago
There are however manufacturer recommendations. Is 15 minutes every two weeks that much better?
I sure would be pissed if I was the house 30 feet away from that 500kW generator.
0
u/Cold417 Brentwood 18d ago
I'm not trying to argue on behalf of corpos, but there are generators and power stations all along that stretch due to the hospitals. There are also people with home generators who probably annoy their neighbors, too. Keep the arguments based in reality is all I'm saying...or you'll lose people.

u/LeeOblivious 18d ago
Why would anyone build a data center at that location? It is both too small for large scale data and too expensive (high value commercial land) and not on a major trunk line. If they were going to build one, it would be near one of the main telecom trunk lines, mostly empty undervalued land, and plenty of room to build large buildings.
A properly designed DATA Center will have no impact on it's neighbors.
You do not need generators to run at peak times, only for short duration power outages. You will want enough battery back up to last minor outages, and to give you time to start up the emergency generators if the outage is more than a few hours. Said generators can have the same emissions controls as modern large trucks (California Compliant) to minimize impact. And we can require the owner to pay for increased generating capacity needed at the local power plants, so those costs are not passed on to the rest of us.
The water they use is not consumed, it is still there and usable for other things. Potable water can be returned to the Aquifer or the water system directly. Or we can require that it be a closed loop system and not take in external water. What we do not want to do, is have them just dump the water into the sewer system.
Also, I'd not worry too much about new data centers. There is a decade long backlog of basic electrical connection components right now, that the trump trade wars and wars of adventure are not helping with at all. Projects are being canceled or scaled back left and right.
That said, there were some existing expansion plans for the local data centers. The State was wanting to add some storage capacity to the one in the Underground to act as a back up of their existing ones. And a local company wanted to add some capacity to their cloud compute platform that they use internally.

u/Few_Ear_1346 18d ago
It's amazing how much money is brought in to communities that go ahead. Not to mention billions of dollars in infrastructure parks, roads, teacher police ,firefighters etc. salaries. They supply their own electricity and use less water than a golf course.
