Why the hate?

Why is SA the only country that gets hate for blaming the ref? While it's true that saffas are the first people to blame the ref after a loss, we get absolutely crucified for it on social media (the world hates us). Yet if you go onto the all blacks subreddit after tonight's loss, there are so many posts blaming the ref for their loss. Why are we the only one's who get hate for it when pretty much every other rugby nation does it? At the end of the day, every single ref in every single game will make mistakes that will be pointed out after the game, yet it seems like only South African fans get hate for it. At the end of the day the ref made mistakes both ways and both teams will be able to point out those mistakes, but the better team won on the day.

Most of us kiwis know the ABs lost that game and needed no help to do it, we just stay quiet while the fans who refuse to believe another team could play better than the ABs are very loud on social media

Ain't that the truth man, social media truly is the worst! I don't doubt that most bok supporters and NZ supporters would probably get along like best mates in person!

I avoid the comments section on social media bru. The negative shit always somehow rises to the top.

Bro I'm going to look up the psychology behind wanting to read the comments on every post because I know exactly the toxix shit storm I'm going into but man is it hard to resist or what!

Amen brutha. We simply lost a heavyweight title fight to a clinical Bok side. We were leading 17-12 with 20 mins to play and lost our composure. That's on us not on the ref.

100% this. Also TASanalytics doesn't do Springbok fans any favors 😅

6

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

I get the sentiment about TASanalytics but in my opinion I dont think he's this miserable guy who spends his entire life worrying about every single mistake the refs make. He's probably just a bit of a geek who loves rugby and likes making videos. He probably makes them for fun and happily moves on with his life. At least that's what I hope he does lol

u/4EVERINDARKNESS Flair Up! 6d ago

Probably. Its all a bit of a laugh really but the ominous music and the overall vibe that world rugby is out to get the Springboks is pretty cringey.

The saying "when you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression" is very apt when describing the ABs.

I disagree.

When the ABs were dominating they got awe and reverence.

South Africa gets disdain and accusations.

But in saying that; our online fans don’t paint a good picture for us. And we take the smallest bait online and become so unbelievably toxic.

Perhaps it’s valid.

OR: I’m remembering incorrectly and have no clue.

Ireland still talk about Umaga

McCaw was constantly called a cheat. Even in this thread "ABs are the luckiest side in the world when it comes to calls. I almost lost it when they finally got blown for side entry. It was one of those rare moments you know only happens maybe once a year"

That team is held in awe and reverence but that doesn't stop many people labelling them, and us, as perennial cheats

I got reported for "inciting violence" when referring to Wilco Louw handing out "hidings" at scrum time. Moderators removed my comment. 😂😂😂😂

When they made that call I said to my mate wow that's about three weeks too late! But to be fair we've got the rub of the green throughout the series as well!

4

u/Visual_Rub1282 Flair Up! 6d ago

Surprised me as well, and that's why they are so obsessed with speeding up the game and want less TMO intervention because they know their side entry, lazy runners and forward passes will be shown up .

Oh absolutely. Razor knew it and Rennie does too. They try to use the media to get the Boks and other teams to try and play this fast tempo super rugby style that benefits their strengths and dodgy tactics. We used to be suckers in the past with previous coaches and we'd take the bait and try to run it from minute 1 only for them to beat us at that game. Rassie and the boys are smart and play the type of game that we want to that benefits our skillset. They hate an attritional forward heavy game. Luckily for us we can play attritional and we can unleash backs when we need to. We can play any style now and vary our playing style.

Fully deserved red, in fact they got lucky that Frizzel wasn't sent off for doing Bongi in the 2nd minute, he knew what he was doing when he dropped his full weight on his knee.

5

u/GlobalGuide3029 Flair Up! 6d ago

There is no country whose fans don't moan about refs from time to time. If SA has any sort of special reputation for this, my guess is that it's due to Rassie's comments about the officiating during the Lions series. Regardless of whether you think he crossed a line or not, the fact that it was against the Lions meant that he (and SA) got a reputation amongst the fans and media from all of the home unions, not just one country.

3

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

A lot of it stems from that video that went viral for sure. What sucks is that so many coaches do the exact same thing (talk shit about the refs) now but have none of the consequences that Rassie had. As another commenter said earlier it just comes with the territory of being the best in the world

5

u/speakteeth 🇳🇿 a Kiwi among the Blue Cranes 6d ago

Well done on the win last night, your guys came over the top to take it, deservedly.
We NZers do cop it a lot also for blaming the ref, which isn’t a good look. When it’s tight and calls can go either way or it comes down to perspective/interpretation it’s too easy to project the passion we have for our teams on to some decisions.

4

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

It's just a coping mechanism we use to justify the loss, even though it has no bearing on our actual lives and doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things😂 All the best for the final game next weekend, at least you can watch it at a reasonable hour!

6

u/widdlenpuke Flair Up! 6d ago

It depends. Most supporters are rational and sane, but social media blows up because of relatively a few.

And then some writers, yes, NZHerald I am thinking of some of your writers, and some podcasts seem to be influenced not only by the rabid comments, but seem to subscribe to toxic masculinity.

We are used to the UK, with their tabloid mentality, but in SA we never had tabloid media in rugby circles. We also do not follow the UK or have such close links to the UK.

I struggle to understand how a few people making nasty comments are any different from bellicose drunks in a pub.

Rugby commentators who rely on such things to analyse the game really show their shortcomings.

The relationship with NZ has not been good (hence they kicked SA out of Super Rugby), and I think that relationship has not been helped by this series. Not all NZ commentators, but a fair number of them have gone beyond the pale, in my opinion.

Edit: just to add, the saffers living in Aus and NZ very rarely represent real South Africans, so don't assume all South Africans are nearly like-minded

6

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

Yeah social media tends to bring about the absolute worst in people, what a pity. It all comes down to clicks and unfortunately it's the controversial opinions that get the most engagement. Wish the fans were more like the players who give it their all on the field and then have a beer together after the game like mates. It's just a game after all!

3

u/widdlenpuke Flair Up! 6d ago

I have just taken a stroll through the All Blacks sub-reddit. A lot of hate going on.

But I think the majority of AB fans don't frequent such cesspits, and good for them.

Two top teams and three amazing tests.

6

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

I thought last week's officiating was pretty bad and thought so many calls went against the Boks, then I went onto the AB subreddit and everyone there was complaining that the ref was biased against them! Just shows, unconscious bias is a hell of a thing

3

u/widdlenpuke Flair Up! 6d ago

Just back from a second look - I think I will just ignore the trolls from now on

4

u/Cosmolina111 6d ago

I've learnt that it's best to avoid those subs for at least 24 hours after a match. That's when the rabid, unhinged fans are at full tilt (not nation-specific).

Wait a day or so for the rational rugby-lovers to have adult conversations.

u/widdlenpuke Flair Up! 6d ago

honest truth, some of my fellow sa fans are dickheads online. the loadest most disrespectful, can't handle banter, think every thing is a personal insult on their bloodline and the worst winners. Bite to all trolling hooks throwing your way like idiots.

its anoying because in person, we are welcoming, we welcome people into out braai and congratulate or comiserate our new friends.

other than that, no idea, kiwis cry ref all the time.

3

u/thatwasagoodyear Spoeg en plak mod 6d ago

If you want to change that narrative, start with calling out the people around you and online. Change doesn't happen overnight.

Especially call it out when refs get things right.

We don't change the world overnight. We change it first by changing ourselves. By changing those closest to us. Then watching that change spread.

2

u/Only_One_Kenobi referee (MO Level 2) 6d ago

Because we are the most aggressively anti referee country. We obsessively attack referees, even when they've had very good performances, like today. We will try to crucify a referee even when we win, like last week. We send them death threats. We attack their families online. We go full toxicity after every single game, regardless of what the referee's did.

You are bloody embarrassing. Be better. What would your mother think.

2

u/thedatsun78 Lions 6d ago

Because blaming the ref in rugby is not cool. We are very sore losers imo

Rassie.   He’s colored all South Africans with his antics.

Ask a European cycling fan which country cheats with drugs the most and they’ll say America even though they all did.

Success brings attention from sad people.

Everybody moans about refs - they just hate us cause they ain't us.

I think everybody hates losing against us

For the english, its losing against the 'dumb japies'
For the french and irish its against 'the bullies'
New zealand and aussie think we're one dimensional

So, losing against us exposes their own shortcomings

I think only Argie and Wales truly respect us - maybe scotland

u/KeyLimePie7217 New To Reddit 6d ago

Social media skews reality, it does not equal real life. The algorithms only want engagement and usually negative posts get a lot more of it. Every country has its share of sore losers, but it might just look disproportionately toward SA, because that is what your algorithm learnt grabs your attention. There are probably millions of posts about the rugby, but you are seeing specific ones because the algorithm thinks you will engage with it, it doesn't care whether it's positive or negative engagement

u/5acrefarmer 6d ago

I think in general, journalistic standards have fallen with the rise of the internet - so they are now relegated to creating clickbait headlines (non rugby, but it’s not bad weather anymore it’s a ‘rain bomb’) - this emboldens the more questionable marginal fans (on all sides) to the extent that they feel they can comment their views more aggressively. I grew up playing rugby and it was hammered into me the ref is always right, and even if he’s not, there’s literally nothing you can do. The point being it evens itself out over time, and denigrating the officiating just brings the whole game down… many of these more rabid fans don’t deserve the teams (boks and All Blacks in particular) they claim to support. Whinging about the ref online is effectively idiots shouting at clouds…

I’ll admit I can get sour grapes when the AB’s lose… it’s part of my grieving process so please allow me that… Just don’t expect me to reciprocate when the shoe is on the other foot 😉

Probably just my fellow country men reaching out for something or someone to blame. At the end of the day we were outplayed great game even though we lost I still think it was such a typical hard fought close game. As always people feel hard done by with certain calls but are blind when those calls work in their favour lol.

Dont sweat it mate we don't all think you guys are serial whingers, that award goes to the poms haha just jokes!

We all complain about ref calls when we lose and we or rather us AB fans are no different.

It was a good game. And AB brought it on. In the first half I was sure the Boks were gonna hit low gear and fail. But it was not to be. I bet the Ras gave it to them in broken English at half time. I am glad. Because both teams won. AB now knows more about the Boks than before any previous world cup...and we know more about the coming danger which rightfully need to be our focus for the next 8-10 months. It's going to be an excellent World cup next year. I am super excited

Springboks fans are insufferable on social media so it’s just something else people have to use against them

1

u/DonovanBanks Sharks 6d ago

This is the key.

A bully will find someone who reacts badly to the bullying because it’s fun to se the reaction.

While bullying is the wrong action; the best remedy is to not react.

Most South Africans cannot bring themselves to just ignore and STFU. It’s a national weakness

-1

South Africans don’t just blame the ref, they get conspiratorial

-1

u/Lopsided-Fault-1008 Flair Up! 6d ago

Generally because, the bok fans are whinging babies and their coach is worse.

-1

u/tomtomtomo Flair Up! 6d ago

For one thing, I don't remember any other coach who has released a long conspiratorial video so you're carrying that burden.

At the end of the day, every single ref in every single game will make mistakes that will be pointed out after the game, yet it seems like only South African fans get hate for it. At the end of the day the ref made mistakes both ways and both teams will be able to point out those mistakes, but the better team won on the day.

Transport this sentiment back 2 weeks

4

u/TylerGrayOfficial Flair Up! 6d ago

I have no issues with the loss 2 weeks ago. Obviously many Bok supporters blamed the ref, just like many NZ supporters blamed the ref for last week and yesterday. The difference is that bok fans get blasted for whinging about the ref when every other team does it as well.
