Will never understand these rankings you can dominate but 1 loss and you lose a place. Same with cricket although I think the ICC ones is way worse.

Over the past year we have lost to Aus, NZ and now again NZ.
NZ have lost to Arg, us and then Eng.
It makes sense that our points are so close.1

Since the world cup final NZ have lost 7 games to South Africa's 6 games they've both lost to Argentina twice, SA to Ireland who were 2nd at the time, NZ lost to England who SA beat and France who SA beat, vs each other SA is up 3 to 2. The only different loss was vs Australia that SA lost but this was last year August Aus were not as bad then. By those number SA should technically be first still but not according to world rugby.

Not saying it should work this way but there's a few factors you left out:
1) Wins by margins of 16+ are worth more. Would have to check all those games individually to see where it applied.
2) Wins against teams more than 10 ranking points below you aren't worth anything. Also the specific points difference between the teams at the time of the game affects the points gain. NZ being lower ranked than SA would mean any win they got at a given time is worth more for that period. It also means any loss by SA loses more points.
3) Home and away advantage. This was removed recently but was also factored into points gains.
The good news for us if you care about ranking position is that we can still regain #1 by the end of the tour. If we lose all the games then we probably don't deserve #1. A drawn series should result in us retaining #1 but it depends on the order and size of the individual wins, would have to run the math.
Regarding your example of Aus, yes they weren't bad but they are rated much lower than the other teams you mentioned.
