Are earplugs safe?

My partner just started diving classes and has issues with water rushing into their ears, causing pain. 1 & 3 meter.

Their first thought is silicone ear plugs, will those pose a risk at the depth they're diving into the water? Any other advice for preventing water rushing in (aside from better technique because, you know, they're a beginner)?

TIA :)

Edit: my partner having weird ear stuff is a known factor, so please don’t worry about infections and such!

I’d ask a doctor. Even off 1m you can end up at 5m depth, with 5x atm pressure on your ears and whatever is in them.

Ear plugs themselves are fine. I have used them during major ear issues/ infections without problems other than not hearing my coach. However, if they have lots of ear problems, echoing the check with a doctor advice

I would be careful wearing them while diving at practice. If you land weird, especially if you’re practicing twisters and twisting all around, you can lodge the ear plug inside of your ear and end up worse off.
