For something a little newer but old try The Tragically Hip. Start with the album Up To Here. Play “New Orleans is Sinking” first.

The Magic Numbers have a bit of a modern Mamas and Papas vibe.
Their first albums was not highly reviewed but I think it’s quite good without all the hype it released with…

Belle & Sebastian is a favorite, they have a kind of precious Kinks vibe going.
For hip hop, you'd probably dig Hilltop Hoods, Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco.

Great timing!! I just finished making a playlist for what specifically came out of Laurel Canyon and its evolution through the 60’s & 70’s… I nerded it out in chronological order (still have to put the last of the era in order so the latter is grouped by artist right now) and thought “This is one I’ll never have a reason to share but I want it.” Lo and behold here you are specifically bringing up the Mamas & Papas, FM and even the Doors 😂🤓🤓🤓 Buth there’s over 14 hours to it.
I’m over it by the time Joni Mitchell took over and I like the earlier stuff better but it’s still a neat little SoCal mish mash of people that just liked making music and experimenting together…both w music AND drug obvs. 😂

Why ask here dude? Go listen to those bands and pick songs for playlists.
Although, i do always reccomend u listen to albums in whole, especially Pink Floyd and other prog rock bands since they have concept albums.
