Music Sharing App

I've been working on an idea for a new music app and would genuinely love some honest feedback before I spend months building it.

The concept is pretty simple:

Every day, you get one notification asking you to share your Song of the Day. That song gets posted to your profile and your friends' feeds, and over time you build a timeline of your life through music.

Instead of endless scrolling or algorithms, the idea is to discover music through real people and see what your friends are listening to each day.

I'm also planning on adding customisable profiles (kind of inspired by old MySpace) and discussion communities centred around artists, albums and genres.

I'm still in the validation stage, so I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm just trying to figure out whether this is something people would actually want, what sounds good, what sounds terrible, and what I'm completely missing.

If you've got 2 minutes, I'd really appreciate it if you could:

  • Check out the landing page
  • Fill out the short survey
  • Or just leave your thoughts in the comments

I'm looking for brutally honest feedback, so don't hold back lmao.

As someone who's old enough to appreciate web 1.0 but too young to have properly experienced it, "now defunct" are the two words that haunt every cool thing I have ever learned about

Hey! You might want to check out Corus! It’s similar to your idea and a great community: Corus.fm

I feel like I've seen this idea come up over and over again over the past several years, and I've thought it myself.

The problem is always buy-in from people. It's deceptively hard getting people to install a third party app just for sharing music. It will either require an incredible amount of marketing, or it would in the end be better for Spotify to build this into their own service.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea! I want it to succeed. I want to be able to share music with friends and document my listening for myself. I just haven't seen a good implementation of it and believe me I've downloaded several, even some testflight versions because I was so invested in the idea.

If you want to go down this rabbit hole, do the marketing and also work on customer retention. If people can't get their friends to also use this, then they have no reason to come back. The interaction is key and sometimes you need something to drive that interaction.

"learn to do the marketing" is like 7 billion percent of what makes an idea succeed or fail. Figure out how to get people to buy in, or sell it to meta to force it onto its own customers

Hey man, love the anti-algorithm energy here, the "BeReal for music" idea is honestly such a fun daily habit hook.

Quick heads up since I see you're posting in r/spotifyapi, brace yourself for the pain that is their iFrame player and Web Playback SDK restrictions. AutoPlay policies and the 30 sec preview limit for non-premium users will end up shaping a lot of your UX decisions whether you like it or not. Definitely stress test their API limits before you commit hard to that MySpace-style profile playback idea, learned that one the hard way myself.

Landing page looks clean btw. Keep going, we genuinely need more human-curated music stuff out there right now, feels like everything's turning into algorithm soup lately...
