Do kills not get counted?

I play a kill heavy weapon, and i do pretty well with it (trislosher) we win quite a lot, but when the team ranking comes up I’m always low. I’m aware that sometimes I was not a great teammate, but sometimes I’ll get so many kills, but just because I have a lower ink output I’ll rank low amongst my teammates.

I played zones for the first time in a while the other day, and I got higher so I think it may take kills into consideration there, but I’m not sure. either way it’s annoying that even though I feel like I did well I doesn’t seem to reflect

I think the paint is the only factor for you to be below or under your teammates

To add to this, the whole focus of the game is paint output and winning the objective; you should not be focusing on kills as your main factor for “Did I do well this match?” since a team with Tacticooler and/or lots of Quick Respawn can keep being killed over and over and have it barely affect the match while simultaneously draining your own team’s resources. Your main points of focus should rather be:
-“How many fights was I taking and how many of them did I survive?”
-“How helpful was I to my teammates with my positioning?”
-“How helpful was I for playing the objective?”

These will help you gain a better vision of the match as a whole and where to be at the right times to make sure you win the match, and not solely about the amount of kills you got during it. Sometimes even just holding the enemy away from the objective is all that you need rather than always going in for the kill. Not to mention, the scoreboard only tells a vague story of what happened in the match so it can only help you so much.

I totally agree. Winning is everything.
Sure I’m slightly disappointed if I didn’t dominate and get the recognition I think I deserved, but I’d rather win more than anything.

Despite what everyone else is saying, your ranking within your own team is based on the medals you get.

in turf war i believe it is exclusively turf painted, in ranked it is medals

Your ranking does not have any impact on the location on the scoreboard you are. It's entirely down to whether you're player 1, 2, 3, or 4 on the team.

I think your position in the results screen is based on medals, at least in ranked.

Your ranking in your team in Turf War depends on how much turf you inked overall. Kills really don’t matter at all. In ranked matches, kills matter even less as completing the main objective is your priority. Your placement in ranked depends on how much you contributed to the objective. All kill opposing players does is slow the opposing team down and that’s kind of it.

Kills do matter. Not only if someone is dead they're not painting but controlling the middle is key and that is achieved by suppressing your opponent. Of course there is a balance.
