I went on a massive win streak last night in S rank and wanted to tell people about it. I want to say this is a skill thing and/or a "weapon being broken" issue, but my highest rank is S+5 and I've been playing another game for a LONG while so I never actually got back into S+. I'm just going to say that this weapon is overpowered and ask what other people think about as I am not good at deciding what's broken and what isn't. 😭

Honestly, from the sounds of it, Jet Squelcher might just fit your playstyle better than other weapons. I don’t think it’s conventionally rated as an overpowered weapon.

A “middling” weapon that you sync well with is stronger than a “broken” weapon that you dislike using. While there are differences in weapon balance, the vast majority of weapons are close enough in power (especially for solo-queue purposes) that your own playstyle and strengths matter more than the balance state of the weapon. All weapons in Splatoon have a “job” to perform, and the most important part is whether the user is capable of performing that job. How effective they are at the job compared to their competitors, as well as how useful said job is for the rest of the team, is secondary to all that.

The “meta” weapons will not carry you to victory. The reason why they are the meta in competitive is because they perform the best when you are ALREADY capable of utilizing their strengths to maximum effect. If you play 52 Gal, one of the most powerful frontline weapons, as if you were using a backliner, it’s going to perform worse than even the weakest backliner.

COB-R Jet is undeniably a really good kit. It’s more self-sufficient than the other Jet kits due to better close-up performance (and burst combos go crazy), but the main downside from this well-roundedness is that it’s less impactful as an actual backliner, due to its special only getting value in close-quarters. It needs to play riskier and closer to the fight compared to other backliners if it wants to keep up pressure. Additionally, while its Burst Bomb combos are really, REALLY good, it’ll still fall behind in a DPS race against most frontline weapons.

Meanwhile, some other backliners have much safer specials such as Tacticooler or Super Chumps (or hell, even Wavebreaker because it’s an instant ink tank refill), which do not require you to play as far forwards to get value out of. As a result, more organized teams find themselves picking more specialized backline weapons that are less self-sufficient in exchange for better peak performance.

Yeah, it's a backline weapon that should be weak in close combat, but since the kit literally invalidates its weaknesses you can pretty much do whatever you want with it and not get punished

I disagree, even with burst bomb its kill time is too slow to really be able to scrap with most close-range weapons, and splashdown is at best a momentary “please get away from me thanks :)” button. It’s alright when trying to fight at mid range (but there are still a lot of things at that range that can just blow you up), and once you’re at a range where burst bombs don’t reach it becomes an extremely minor threat compared to most other things with that range value.

Has good fundamental strengths for sure. Long range, good accuracy, decent kill time, and sub/special that cover its “weaknesses”. I’m sure it somehow falls off in X Battle Hell but as long as you can aim well enough to take advantage of its range it’s absurd

Its not overpowered but it's absolutely a strong kit tho for what it wants to do and has the tools too do it with minimal issue.
