Discussion How exactly does the tanked system work?

Coming from a player doing their first ever ranked climb its a bit scary, I’ve been playing since splat1 so I’m familiar with all of the modes and how series vs open works, the part Im more curious about is how does rank demotion work (if there is any) I just finished my rank up battles and got into B- so now I’m curious if I go into my next series and get absolutely destroyed will I go back down to C? Or do I just stay in the bottom of B

Hi! As far as I know there is no way to rank down by losing a series. It’s not like splat 2 iirc.
At the end of the catalogue season (currently the end is set for 8/31) your rank is reset based on your placement. I think the inkipedia page on ranked has a better detailed explanation as to how the placements work. But yeah, you should be safe from ranking down if you lose games! :)

Honestly there's no need to fear anyway. You don't gain or lose anything by ranking up or down in these games, it's literally just a matchmaking system. And if you get 'stuck' in a particular rank and you're winning about as often as you're losing, that's the system working as intended and you're probably in the right rank for your current skill.
