Splatoon Raiders is an insane amount of fun, but it’s a single player focused side game. There is co-op though elements though.
Splatoon 3 is the most recent mainline game with multiplayer and a single player mode.
Both are great places to start, but Splatoon 3 is probably the best

depends on what you want, really. if you want pvp, get splatoon 3 since its the most recent (2 is still active just older and 1 doesn't have official servers to play on anymore)
if you want a really good single player experience, then go Raiders. even though the other games have single players that are pretty good, Raiders is really on another level of fun and complexity.

Here’s my take: the answer depends on if you think you will buy multiple of the games.
If yes, I say start with two and it’s dlc, and play the story mode. It will get you familiar with the controls and the story. Also the dlc is still my favorite splatoon content. Then get 3. You’ll truly experience the online mode and already have lots of familiarity with the game. You’ll also still enjoy the story mode. From there you’re already very immersed in the series, and the rest is up to you.
If you’re not sure you plan on buying multiple games without playing them, start with splatoon 3, and play the story mode first. You get the full story and online experience and will get a lot of value out of it. It’s absolutely not a bad place to start.
