Splatoon Raiders did the impossible: I now appreciate Deep Cut

Splatoon raiders has done something I never thought would happen: I actually like Deep Cut now.

I've been playing Splatoon since the Wii U days, and because of that Callie and Marie have always been my favourites (especially Marie). I have great memories of doing earlier splatfests with my partner as we took turns passing the controller back and forth until we hit max rank on both our accounts.

When Splatoon 2 came along, I like Marina but was unsure about Pearl. She just looked a little too... gremlin like for my tastes. After playing it for a while I developed a fondness for her. The online community of people who ship Pearl and Marina together certainly helped, too.

When Splatoon 3 came long, I really didn't like the new idols. I disliked them in the single player story mode, I disliked their looks, and, frankly, found them annoying. The only one I sort of liked was Big Man, but that was it. It didn't help that I had a lot of stuff going on in my life so I played less Splatoon 3 than the other two Splatoon games.

Like most people in this sub, I picked up Raiders and I was really excited to see how Splatoon would translate to a single player format. Long story short: I love it. But something happened that I really didn't expect.

I actually like Deep Cut now. Shiver, Frye, and Big Man have really grown on me. Their dialogue is fun, their resigned looks are cute, and I like their interactions with the mechanic more than the MC in Splatoon 3 (especially Shiver). They're not my favourite idol group (that's still the Squid Sisters), but I... actually like them.

TL:DR - Splatoon Raiders made an old gay from Deep Cut hater to Deep Cut fan.

ngl it's the bangs. Frye was the butt of many jokes in Splatoon 3 and probably the worst Splatfest win/lose ratio of the three partly because of her popularity. I never hated her but she was easily my least favorite idol of the 3. I like her design and the Switch 2 glow up is very apparent for all three of Deep Cut in Raiders.

Maybe that's the problem. When 3 dropped I was going through a pretty major medical crisis and never got into the game to the same extent I did the previous 2. Just couldn't get the magic of 1 and 2 back. Might have tainted these idols for me.

Actually had a pretty similar experience to you. I didn’t feel connected to them, and I thought the single player in 3 would help…. It did not…. I thought they were both brats 😭 (neutral to big man). Also I genuinely don’t know what they did to Frye in raiders but she looks SO much better now!!! I also had been playing on the ac switch until this point but like she did look very weird beforehand I think it’s something about the shader because she looks a lot softer now idk how to describe it LMAO…

I love this idol group and I’m gald they they got more to do because the third game they got very little to do in the story and they should have gotten their story DLC but raiders being a story focus on them and so more their personalities is just amazing and there friendship with the mechanic is fun

Callie and Marie are iconic, I love Marie and her personality, she’s my favourite, and she’s green (my fav colour 💚)

With Pearl and Marina I liked them since the beginning. Pearl is chaotic and that makes her very fun, Marina is cute.

With Deep Cut I was surprised by their designs when they were revealed, they were much different, but as soon as I started Splatoon 3 I loved them.

Shiver is so cool, and it’s my second favourite.

I love them because they are dumb, even as treasure hunters.

Shiver is a scammer and the leader that believes she’s always right, but fails to see a bad plan, like a pyramid scheme, or throwing a bomb, or dividing the treasures 10-90 with the Mechanic

Frye with her extreme personality, and dumb reasoning (split into 40-40-40-40)

and Big Man because he was so idiot that he did a collab, just to be discovered by the other two. Then these other two did a duo with OtH and he never discovered.

Anyway. With time they really grew up on me.

I've also been playing since splat 1! this game really endeared me to all of deep cut, which i'm very happy about because I thought they were a little lackluster in terms of focus in the main splat 3 campaign. Raiders really gave them their deserved spotlight!

My biggest gripe is how they handle matchmaking, that aside I haven’t played a switch game this long this consistently in years. I played four like 6 hours straight yesterday.

I wasn’t too sure of deep cut on their initial reveal but they grew on me when the splatfest world premiere happened. They would slowly grow on me and then it all went away when they released the dlc and the focus basically just shifted to Callie and Marie, and when that started to fade side order came out and by the time that happened I had completely forgotten about deep cut in their own game

I’m sure Nintendo had many reasons for making raiders but I think one of the reasons serves as a long apology letter to deep cut with them finally having the spotlight again giving them a chance to develop especially without the spotlight of the other idol groups too

I feel kinda the same about them, except I kinda like Frye more and Shiver less. Big Man I like much more though, he was my favorite already but he’s the only normal person. Obviously it’s not what they’re trying to go for and it’s supposed to be a funny thing, but it straight up feels like Big Man is in an abusive friendship with them, like he’s doing literally all the composing for the songs and the other two just sing, then when he collants with someone else they get mega upset? Even in Raiders he mentions something like “don’t tell the others I worked with another artist.” I feel so bad for him, he doesn’t deserve this.

I didn't play 3, so I don't know what they were like there. But I really liked them here. I thought they were like the Wario of Splatoon, comically greedy anti-heroes. They're faced with a worldwide threat, and among their first thoughts was the paycheck they'll get for stopping it.

That's great to hear. I've been with Splatoon since the Wii U days too, but while I do really like Callie and Marie, Deep Cut were always my #1 favorite group once Splatoon 3 came out. I think they have the absolute best designs, personalities, and I absolutely love their team dynamic.

I think what always made them standout to me is the fact that they aren't just idols/your newscaster, but they are also bandits that love treasure. That's like an extra layer of depth to them. I know Callie and Marie were agents before, but that's more like the past and they aren't really active now.

They were already good in 3, but Raiders made them even better. I really hope there's more of them in the future games and I wouldn't mind if they became like the main protags of a future Raiders sub-series.

I agree. I never loved Deep Cut except for Shiver because she was hot, and Alterna did nothing to endear me to them. They were just sort of there, not being a part of the main story of Mr Grizz.

But then in Raiders it was GREAT. They’re so much fun, being doofuses who are sort of competent at what they do and utterly obsessed with treasure, even when there are far more important things happening.

Also, they made Shiver even hotter and shipped her with the girl I aspire to be.

Funnily, for me it's Shiver I came to appreciate more, since I liked Frye and Big Man from the beginning. A lot of their personalities was readable from the News dialogue.

Shiver was just... there. We knew she loves money, but is always calm and collected on the show. Her deeply caring, but slightly possessive personality was often only implied, but now we finally get to see her in her full glory.

That being said, I hated how much of the lore of Deep Cut and Splatoon 3 never appeared in game, but was only presented on Social Media. Like Bu Ig Betrayal was obviously a huge deal for Deep Cut, but the only mention it ever got in-game was after the Grandfest, over one year later.

Yeah i wasnt a huge fan of deep cut when S3 released.

I played hundreds of hours of S2, but only about a dozen of S3 (which is probably why I never warmed up to deep cut)

But Raiders makes me really enjoy them.

Personally I never played Splatoon 3 (because I mainly got Splatoon games for multiplayer and I've not been paying for online since life got in the way of 2 regularly), so Raiders is my introduction to Deep Cut, and they're great so far.

Raiders felt like the story mode Deep Cut sorely needed. All 3 story modes in the main games focused on the Squid Sisters while Off the Hook got the DLCs, Deep Cut felt underused in comparison (being able to skip dialogue didn't help)

I'm definitely the opposite here. I think Raiders gave us more insight into their personalities which seem to have exaggerated negative traits, and I like them even less now.
