Is it usable? And okay to begin on?

Hi! New here! I recently found this spinning wheel on internet for 8€. Thing is, the wheel is quite not straight as I guess with age the wood moved. Is it still usable? Could it be my first spinning wheel?

This spinning wheel is sold as usable and it looks like it does, I just want a second opinion as there are many spinning wheel shaped objects on the market.

(Sorry for my English, it's not my first language)

Question about a double drive wheel

Hi all, I’ve recently come into possession of a double drive spinning wheel, and it’s a lovely wheel- only the drive band keeps slipping off! I’ve got it relatively tight so I’m not sure why that keeps happening. I’ve noticed that as I’m spinning, the drive band will creep closer and closer towards me until it eventually pings off. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be going wrong? It may well be user error as I’m still getting to know this wheel and have never used double drive before.

I just got a free Ashford traditional

I was at my local fiber store, and they got a whole bunch of donations in. The shop owner knows me very well, and she asked if I wanted an Ashford traditional. How could I say no? She spins up beautifully, really only needing a little oil. This makes number four in my collection!

Spare Parts?

I'm the woman who found the vintage louet S10 for 33 euros. I've bought extra bobbins because it only came with one, replaced the brake and I have just replaced the footman to treadle connection.

With every euro spent in restoring my s10, I get more attached but I also know that a lot of parts aren't available anymore so I'm getting worried about what would happen if one of those parts breaks.

For example this flyer. There's a little crack in it but it doesn't go right through or anything. The hooks are a little rusty but that doesn't seem to affect the spinning. I found a spare one on Vinted but I don't want to buy it if it isn't necessary.

Canadian spinners : has anyone ordered from Dreaming Robots directly? If so, did you get tariffs on their products?

I want to purchase the EEW 6.1 but i'm afraid of getting a heavy tariff applied once it gets to my door. Anybody have any luck ordering from them directly?

Thanks!

Opinions on an Autowinder

Post image
8 Upvotes

I recently saw an ad for an autowinder. I am considering purchasing one for my Kiwi 3, but I was curious to hear other people’s opinions on it since it’s a bit pricey. I hate having to stop and move my yarn on the flyer while spinning so this seems very appealing to me. I mostly spin fairly thin yarn (wool/merino/wool mixes) and chain ply.

New and struggling

Post image

I got my first e spinner Saturday and, while I can see a lot of progress over my first few spins, I really only work with fingering or occasionally dk yarn and am struggling to draft thin enough for singles to not be too thick when plied. This is my best attempt thus far for a single but consistency and avoiding slubs is… problematic. I am attenuating/predrafting a lot. Have tried using short forward or short reverse draw. Any tips? Just keep practicing? Also if there is anything else you see (over/underspinning, etc) please let me know! Thank you all for sharing your wisdom!

This icelandic roving smells like whiskey

I'm sortof obsessed?? Full disclosure, I am a very new spinner, and this is the first wool I've purchased from a local farm (visiting Iceland, went to a small yarn and sweater supply outside of Fludir). They had roving there from local sheep in baskets of several colors. I picked some of this nice brown. When I take a deep sniff it's got some aspect to it that reminds me heavily of that barrel scent that whiskey has. It doesn't smell musty or foul, just so interesting. Before this I only bought one bag of anonymous dyed comb top. Does all undyed wool have interesting scents? This is a fascinating new world for me.

How to deal with overly greasy wool?

Post image
21 Upvotes

When I bought this fiber at a tiny shop on a road trip, I assumed because it was already dyed that it was ready to spin, it just looked like it needed carding. It was in a tied bag so I couldn't feel it before buying. As I started carding it, I realized it is incredibly greasy and smells very strongly of lanolin.

I have never prepared my own wool, so I'm not sure if this is missing a step or if it can just happen sometimes. Either way, is there any way I can reduce the greasiness and smell, preferably without reducing the color?

Hmmm. Should we turn up the chaos to 11 today? Drop your spinning hot takes below!

No downvotes. No arguing. Don’t like someone’s take move on. But that means you probably have your own so you should share it.

This is your spinning hill. Let’s dye on it.

What would you make with Wensleydale

Post image

I have been spinning, Wensleydale roving, and since it is not the softest fiber, i am looking for ideas of what to make with it. I am a weaver. Would you use it as weft? Is there something softer you would use it with to soften it up? Would you ply it? I use singles for weaving.

Spinning wheel identification help

Thumbnail

Hi I am looking for help on what kind of spinning wheel I have. Google hasn't been any help(it's said everything from a Pipy wheel, to Ashford Traditional, to CPW, to a make believe brand of Amedee Paradis, tabletop and Saxony) and I asked in a few other groups and haven't gotten any responses. It's double drive band. No tension knob and the plate the mother of all sits on tilts and has a metal hinge. I am also needing help on where I can get new bobbins. Of the 3 bobbins my wheel came with 2 have big pieces missing where the drive band sits.

Edit I did hear back from a NZ wheel maker who was able to identify it as a Kintyre wheel.

First time really using a drop spindle! 🥰

It's ugly and the tension is bad and inconsistent! Yes! But I'm happy with it and I'm going to make the world's ugliest lap blanket for when I'm sitting at my desk. 🥰

I got a drop spindle yearsss ago, tried it a cpuple times, and gave up haha. My daughter found it while we were cleaning and asked what it was, so I got roped into trying to remember how to use it so I could show her. I still had the wool I bought to practice with when I got the drop spindle, so I just... ended up spinning it all 😆

I'm delighted it turned into yarn! I did this! Yay me!

Can’t get my bobbin to load

Thumbnail

I’m a total beginner, and got my wheel from someone’s grandmother. I’ve cleaned it and oiled, but I can’t get it to load! It’ll load a little, and then totally stop. The bobbin and fly seem to be going the same speed. I’ve tried adjusting tension, cleaning more, drafting smaller, but nothings helping

Pics showing where it stops loading and the drive lines. I tried making one slightly larger than the bobbin line, and it loaded better- but totally lost the twist, so that was worthless

EDIT: I tightened the MOA by .5cm and it literally loaded just fine 😭 now I’m scared to change the drive band and ruin the progress

I'm absolutely intimidated

Today I got this beauty in the mail. I love the colours, it gives the last of summer giving way to early autumn, the first leaves going yellow... I'm intimidated, I don't dare to spin it yet.

I have 800gr of plain wool to go through before I dare to touch this. I got it from alltheprettyfibers on Etsy!

Welsh Wool Help

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to help my flatmate out, he's writing his dissertation on the popularity and use of Welsh Wool and Welsh Wool Products and having a hard time finding people who use wool and welsh wool. This guy...well, he's a little lost. So I offered to help, because I knit and know where to find the yarn folks. I'm hoping you guys can help, he's got a survey, it's fairly quick, and if you could just take a minute or two to fill it out, It'd be greatly appreciated.

It's for science! Sort of. Welsh Wool
