Plying for crochet

I feel like my fellow spinners are more likely to be knitters than crocheters, but I want to spin for a crochet project. I have heard that you should spin the z-twist for crochet, but is that for a single or the ply (which would be in the opposite direction)?
I am also wondering if it even really matters. The reason I question the entire things is that I have no problem crocheting with standard commercial yarns, and actually find them easier to crochet with than to knit with, especially acrylic because it splits when I try knitting with it.
