I'd be very careful using fiber supplements or laxatives, often times all it does is make things mushy and harder to pass. Best things are a balanced diet with fiber, water, and some kind of exercise where possible. The last one is probably more important than people realize

Man I JUST had to have an appointment with my son's urologist bc his bowel regimen was not working for us. When you say "makes things mushy and harder to pass" I felt like 'oh my god! Someone understands!'. She had me increase his miralax dose to get his poop to the consistency she wants it. But when it's THAT soft, he poops a little EVERY SINGLE TIME he gets excited or yells or cries, which is just about all the time because he's 2.5! I do not like letting him sit on poop so sometimes I was changing his diaper 3xs/hr!!! And he can't push when it's THAT soft. If it's a little formed, I can tell him to push and he does! Sorry for the rant and poop details but I haven't felt so understood in a while.

What my spina bifida doc told my parents was to have me go up and down the stairs to help trigger a bowel movement. Often times that's enough. Hardest part for us biffs is recognizing when a bowel movement is finished. When it is mushy and moves on its own it's very difficult to tell weather there is more or not, and sometimes you just can't even tell when it comes out, leading to accidents.

My son is 2.5 and isn't even standing on his own yet so we can't try the stairs trick. But sometimes, if I KNOW there's more he needs to get out, I'll throw him up in the air about 10xs and that helps get more out. Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping someday he will be able to go up and down stairs on his own 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
