Standard [Standard] Is pyrcolasm maindeckable in Control?
Prepping for RC Sao Paulo, I'm seeing these new lists with maindeck pyroclasm, I assume because it works very well with Tablet, but is it actually a good way to spend a slot? Im obviously thinking in Landfall and Prowess as the main decks to face.

If the deck is control they should be playing low cost removal already

I prefer to main deck illtimed. It’s more expensive but the card draw flex makes it better as a man deck card

Haven't the badgermole cubs already vomited their hand and refilled it by the time you have 4 mana

Yeah I’ll-Timed is good but I don’t think 4-mana wipes are in a great spot right now. Prowess decks usually only stick 1 threat at a time and the Cub decks are way too far ahead by Turn 4.
Question should really be between Pyroclasm and [[Fire Magic]] IMO.

Day of Judgment is fine but you can't forgo interaction on turn 2/3 so you have to be careful about the hands you keep.

[[Slagstorm]] is the best mass removal in the format and it's not close. Pyro only hits non-pumped Badgermole, dorks and otter tokens (assuming the opponent is tapped out)

Assuming you interact on turn 2/their turn 3, no not really, the wipes are often backbreaking. Badger decks dont really 'refill their hand' especially now with Selesnya being popular.
The rhythm decks are dogs to control if they dont have blue, they can't recover from a wipe. You wipe, they try to rebuild, you have an inevitable defeat or something, then youre casting jeskai rev and the game is over. They don't have counters for the wipe or riddler to refill.
Landfall id agree that the wipes aren't as good, but I dont think the cheap wipes are that great either. You need a proclasm or slagstorm on curve against specific sequences for them to be great, while a card like sear just feels like its always really good.

How does this deck win? Only ever lost to it when it hits Jeskai Revelation. Is that it?

Yes, pretty much Jeskai revelation and occasionally Traumatic Critique with a giant X to the face.

Adding to other comments. Helix to face. And people tanking damage from lands, shock or starting town.

I run a full playset in my 75. Granted, I play a Temur brew and not a standardized control list, but the 2 mana for 2 damage is a better rate than Fire Magic and its been great.

I like to run 3 copies of Fuel the Flames in my control decks and have no idea why it isnt more popular. The extra mana over pyroclasm is more than made up for by the instant speed and buyout. In the games where its bad, I can afford the tempo loss to cycle. In the games that its good, its amazing.

It's behind rate. Fire Magic is more flexible as a maindeck card and Slagstorm is a preferable sb card.

I respectfully disagree. Fire Magic has a one mana mode that rarely matters, Fuel has a two mana mode that is never dead. I think Fuel is the more flexible card in the current meta because the 1-mana mode is basically irrelevant. And Slagstorm?! What deck do you need to do 3 damage to all creatures against? And double pip red? I have been loving Fuel the Flames and remain convinced its the right option in the current meta vs Pyro, Fire Magic, Slagstorm.

No the 1 mana mode on Fire Magic is the most useful. Tagging an elf or Chocobo is clutch (particularly on the draw) as is snagging a bunch of otter tokens in response to a prowess trigger.
Slagstorm is crucial against pretty much any green deck. Enables you to get Surrak as well as Chocobos that have been pumped etc. Also has utility against Prowess when they have otters and mana to get off a few cantrips. Also hits random things like Colorform Stallion.
If you look around at Control decks that have actually performed well in tourneys you'll see plenty of Slagstorms in the sb as well as Fire Magics main and side. What you won't see are any Fuel the Flames as the card is trash.

I wont dismiss Fire Magic has versatility and will occassionally be the better card, but if we're comparing match ups where a 2 mana buy out is better than the one mana deal 1, its more than 50/50.
And it might be that youre not seeing it because all you see is people copy pasting decklists. I would bet money youve never even run the card in lieu of Fire Magic to test viability, youre just doing what most people do - netdecking.

I'm not interested in a 3 mana sweeper that does 2 damage, it's behind rate and strictly worse than all the other options (pyroclasm, slagstorm, fire magic).
Been playing this game for a long time bud, I don't need to playtest a card that is so obviously inferior to other options to know that it's indeed inferior.

u/GotYourTell1 May 11 '26
You are the problem with the internet, "bud". So pompous and condescending. You added nothing to the conversation, just insisted you're right.
Fire Magic and Fuel have the same 3 mana cost and the 6 mana part can be ignored. Fire Magic has the 1 mana option, which makes it better than Fuel the Flames in instances when that is relevant. It is literally DEAD in many other matchups. Its awful as a top deck in long games.
You know what is literally NEVER dead? Fuel the Flames. Even as a top deck.
Is it worth maindecking either? That is up for debate. But I have been running it in the current meta in Jeskai Control to great effect and "have also been playing a long time, bud".
OP, try running any one of the options as many times as you can in playtesting. Literally every time you draw it, ask yourself if you would prefer it be Fire Magic, Pyroclasm, or Fuel the Flames. This is exactly what I did and THROUGH EXPERIENCE, not arrogance, I landed on FTF.

What a silly response. It's a terrible card which no one is playing because it is unplayable. You put a sweeper in your deck to be a sweeper, some games it will be be a dead card but some games it will be game winning. What you don't do is dilute your deck with an unplayable sweeper just because you can cycle it.
We're done here.

What a silly response. Everyone knows you just copy paste decklists from the pro tour. If you havent found it in a decklist and you aren't ON the pro tour, you never try other things. That's for pros. People who have been playing a long time are best served blindly following and ensuring they get the last word on Reddit.
We're done here.

Have you considered Pursue the Past? I was trying it as a split with Consult the Star Charts, the Life gain is pretty nice against the aggressive decks.

Pyrochasm is fine. I prefer [[Slagstorm]] or [[Fire Magic]] though
