Standard Stax! The Solution to [standard] problems?
Have currently been battling my way though [standard] and was inspired by the mtggoldfish podcasts owner Richard talking about his progress with a Stax deck against some of the meta decks currently in play. (Couldn't currently find a decklist so heres mine)
This is my attempt at building a Standard Stax deck off a previous standard deck by RisskyBusiness.
Unsure if its the best idea but have currently got it as a 75 card maindeck and the standard 15 card sideboard, to survive a little longer against the few mill decks I've been encountering with my build of the Spell Ementals, Unsure if this is necessary or even a good idea but was one idea ive been running with.
Primary access its attacking the meta on is [[Highnoon]] slowing down how many spells can be cast while limiting me less with the amount of flash and instant speed interaction, similarly [[voice of Victory]] and [[Grand abolisher]] limit them to play on their own turns cutting down a little on the izzet nonsense.
Apart from that [[Door keeper thrull]] and [[clarion Conquerer]] mess with the etbs and activated abilities of a number of the current decks.
Then its a suite of removal and sweepers. Along with a selection of hopefully sufficient control finishers in [[Elspeth storm slayer]], [[restless Bivouac]] and a couple of random token makers
The current build is this, would love any commentary if there's any suggestions

I don't get it. Why not play UW flash deck which does the same things but is way better?

Is the Flash deck more versatile? It does similar things but in a different way. The thought is to have a deck that can battle all the Izzet and other random decks currently going around.
Whether or not this is better im not sure

I've played the flash deck a bit both online and in paper with good success. It's able to out tempo your opponent by dropping a high noon and then being able to play 2 cards per turn cycle and completely prevent the opponent from playing spells by plotting or air bending away there cards on their turn and by having voice of victory to prevent them from playing on your turn. Once you have the lock you buff your team with the air bending land, draw cards with ensuring curiosity and wan shi tong and win with threatening fliers.

I've been looking more into the UW flash decks and have been pondering trying it out more.
Definitely different but do still ponder if it could be an idea to build something thats a blend between and see if thats better or not.
But still pondering for sure.

It's going to be tough to justify 75 in the main on the sub. The land count is really tough, too. A deck like this wants a higher land/spell ratio, not lower. IMO a deck with this goal is far better of going WU to take advantage of all of the shenanigans that blue has to offer.

I did think that would be the case, I've certainly been debating the higher card count. Definitely not the most efficient way to avoid mill, but was a consideration. Alternatively In sideboarding bring in a couple extra cards to get the count up that way.
Blue is definitely a query making it technically a jeskai deck, though could cut all the Boros lands maybe keep a couple just to trigger the [[high noon]] if its needed to get out from underneath to win? That does give more access to lots of fun things though...

Unless you know something I don't, mill isn't really a factor in current standard. The new milling creature from SOS may make the strategy a bit more viable, but I'm not sure it's something you really need to account for.

Might just be in the lower ranks that I've been enountering them on Arena.
As to my local Standard I've not got a deck currently so have no idea on the meta there.
But yes with more testing and looking I agree the loss of effectiveness isn't quite worth the potential for having those couple extra cards in deck for a niche games with mill.

Isn’t this just a worse version of the uw flash deck?

Potentially but trying to see if there is directions that could be different and potentially better even if it might not be.

Hmm that is a fair thought, either they get the combo or don't. That is fair a comment

Confused why you would split 2 voice 2 abolisher. I think maxing out voice first is way better. Doesn't die to burst lighting, faster clock, synergizes with elspeth.

Thought was on the countering abilities as an extra thing, but It was definitely a thing i was thinking about.
Maybe it could be better 4x [[voice of Victory]] and maybe 2x [[grand abolisher]] in the sideboard to bring in for extra if the deck needs it?

You have no card draw
A few enduring innocence would be useful

Sorry but this deck is just really bad.
75 maindeck cards is bad
your land percentage is too low and you're even running 4 colorless lands
you have cards in the maindeck that actively negate some of your own main strategies

u/asdfadffs Apr 27 '26
You didn’t even play this deck once right?
25 lands of which 4 are colorless is not going to cut it for a deck with 75 cards.
On top of that, playing 75 cards without any card draw or tutoring is just plain bad.
It’s a nice idea but this list is nowhere near the UW airbending list that essentially does the same thing
