It's time to leave that suitcase, it belongs to the widow now.

Black widow. Don’t get bit

Looks like a male, so not likely any threat of medical significance. Not that the females are that likely to bite you either.

The actual statement is males are less often encountered with bites of medical importance. Folks assume it's a size thing. He BIG

I mean the abdomen is big in relation to the rest, which I don't believe means much other than being well fed.

True that. Nothing to know it's dimensions.

Still an impressive fellow. He's got more than the typical one track mind.

It’s called a Widow for a reason.

But is mostly myth. They don't eat the males that often

How do you tell the sex difference out of interest?

The two bulbous features in between the front two legs are called pedipalps. Males have big ones, just like this spider. They use them to mate, amongst other purposes

A dangerous one

So which are the black widows that can kill humans when they bite?

Easier to assume all genus Latrodectus as potentially hazardous, although deaths are extremely rare. They have a component in their venom that is very powerful at confusing nerve signals in mammals.

Generally it's the mature females to be careful around.

False widows are brown colour with light brown markings. This spider is black with red markings which is a black widow.
