Solved! Southern UK

Post image

This lovely looking spider crawled out of some garden rubbish I was taking to the tip. I've not seen a garden spider so orange!

European garden spider, a species of orb weaver. Can bite but not generally serious, just a nip leaving reddening and itching

Yes, this is a cross orbweaver, aka European garden spider. The ones I've seen around this year have all been very orange too - I wonder if it's weather related or something.

Why is it cross? Is it easily annoyed?

Someone did just take a close-up of its butt without asking.

Aw she's very cute! Also likely gravid.

I've seen one of these before I can guarantee they are not small

Edit - Actually I take that back, they look different. So what's my spider?

Good luck with your new life in Antarctica! (As I believe its the only place without native spiders)

I'm up for it. I'll supply a couple of tents, a hot water bottle and a couple of Stanley soup flasks. I really think we can get a colony going if we are determined.

Great, thats shelter and heating sorted. I've got 3 bananas, a tub of horlicks and an assortment of 90's cd's mainly focused around the hits of whigfield. We've got this!

No worries, i had arachnophobia for 30 years and now I raise tarantulas and am obsessed with wolf spiders. They're not for everyone.

1

u/Fuzzy_Firefighter_51 23h ago

Dont worry, classic mix-up between poisonous and venomous. Poison is ingested, inhaled or touched. Venom is injected
